Abstract: this study aimed to compare the sedative effects of morphine, meperidine and fentanyl, in combination with acepromazine (acp) and their effects on physiologic values in dogs. six healthy beagle dogs were randomly assigned to four treatments with 7-day washout intervals. in three treatments, acp (0.05mg kg-1) was administered and 20 minutes later, the dogs received administration of 0.5mg kg-1 of morphine (acpmor), 5mg kg-1 of meperidine (acpmep) or 5μg kg-1 of fentanyl (acpfen). in treatment acphdmor, 0.1mg kg-1 of acp was administered in combination with 0.5mg kg-1 of morphine. all drugs were administered intravenously. sedation scores were evaluated by a numeric descriptive scale (nds: 0-3) and a simple numeric scale (sns: 0-10). all variables were evaluated for 120 minutes. the administration of acp caused mild to moderate sedation. sedation was improved in all treatments after opioid administration, but significant differences were detected only in acpmor and acphdmor. more dogs presented intense sedation (nds=3.0) after administration of morphine (3/6 and 4/6 dogs in acpmor and acphdmor versus 1/6 in other treatments). duration of sedation was longer in acpmor and acphdmor. mild to moderate decreases in blood pressure, respiratory rate and temperature were observed in all treatments but decreased hr was observed only in acpmor and acphdmor. no significant differences were observed in the aforementioned variables when twice the dose of acp was used (treatment acphdmor). under the conditions of this study, administration of morphine, in combination with acp, results in greater and longer sedation than meperidine and fentanyl. increasing the dose of acp, in combination with morphine, does not improve the degree of sedation. all combinations used were considered to be safe for healthy dogs.

Psychology (PSYCH) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/psych.2014.59121

This present article was constructed from an empirical work of intervention-research in a support group for transgender people which worked at the Clínica de Psicologia Aplicada (CPA) [Applied Psychology Clinic] of the Universidade Federal de Juiz de Fora (UFJF), in Minas Gerais, Brazil. It aimed at analyzing psychosocial aspects of the interventions that such people made to their bodies, investigating process of health and sickness involved in these contexts. The analysis of the participants’ reports of the support group identified itself with a deep relation between the construction of the bodies and subjectivities of travesty and transgender people belonging to the lower classes and the utilization of the Brazilian public health system, called Unified Health System (SUS). As results, it found that in Brazil, the travesty and transgender population is neglected when accessing the public health services, which causes many damages and, in some cases, irretrievable consequences to the health of these people. The treatment model in the public health system in Brazil concerning the travesty and transgender population is reductionist and precarious, considering health only under the biological view and disregarding the complexity of this phenomenon. This way, SUS neglects the psychic losses that transgender brings related to their bodies, something which contradicts the broad health concept defined by the World Health Organization (WHO).

Silva, Lucia de Fátima da;Damasceno, Marta Maria Coelho;
Texto & Contexto - Enfermagem , 2005, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-07072005000200014
Abstract: this study presents reflection based on the data collected in a doctorate thesis concerning nursing care in intensive cardiologic therapy. the nurses and nurse helpers were asked what care is and if they observed the people who perform the care, executing the care procedures. it was evidenced that differences exist between what is said about the care and what is done in practice, or rather, between speech and reality. although they affirm that the care must privilege technical procedures and humanistic attitudes, the practice demonstrates the relevance given to the use of the devices and the attendance of the biologic necessities. we considered for this reflexion that this practice gives the responsibility of performing administrative-managerial and biological activities to the professionals. thus, it does not justify the mooring cables to the technical aspects of the care. the challenge presented to the citizens is to identify the instant where one must emphasize the objective dimensions or those of the existential area that express the diversity of human feelings.

Texto & Contexto - Enfermagem , 2005,

Health (Health) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/health.2014.611144
Abstract: The alcohol abuse is associated with a wide range of social, health and legal problems to analyze the pattern of alcohol consumption of users of a Family Health Unit. A descriptive, cross-sectional study with a quantitative approach, conducted with 207 users of a Family Health Unit who responded the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test. Data were analyzed with the aid of the STATA/SE 12.0 software. To analyze the association of the variables, the chi-square and Fisher’s exact test were used. Of the participants, 40.6% presented abusive consumption of alcohol, which is strongly associated to the male sex, single, between 18 and 30 years of age, who have no religion and some sort of occupation. There was no relation with monthly income and education. Screening and prevention programs to alcohol abuse are important for the most vulnerable group in the primary health care.

Abstract: Previous investigations suggest association between obesity and Ala16Val MnSOD gene polymorphism. The V allele produces enzyme which not catalyze the superoxide anion efficiently as occurs with A allele. As obesity is related to development of other metabolic disorders we performed a study that analyzed the effect of interaction between Ala16Val MnSOD polymorphism and obesity on lipid, oxidative and inflammatory biomarkers of adult subjects. The study enrolled 161 volunteers as categorized in six groups with different genotypes: Obeses with different genotypes (AAO, VVO and AVO) and nonobese (AANO, VVNO and AVNO). In general the group AANO presented lower values whereas VVO presented higher values of biomarkers analyzed. These results suggest that oxidative metabolism influenced by genetic status could to minimize or maximize the obesity effects on lipid, oxidative and inflammatory biomarkers that are also implicated in the genesis of important dysfunctions and diseases as atherosclerosis, diabetes 2 and cardiovascular morbidities.

Abstract: In a previous study we have shown that public buses in Oporto, the second largest city in Portugal, were highly contaminated with MRSA. Here we describe the results of a similar study performed in another urban area of Portugal–Lisbon, the capital. Between May 2011 and May 2012, hand touched surfaces of 199 public buses in Lisbon were screened for MRSA contamination. Subsequently, the hands of 575 passengers who frequently use these bus lines were also screened. All hand carriers of MRSA were further screened for nasal carriage. The isolates were characterized by PFGE, staphylococcal cassette chromosome (SCC) mec typing, spa typing, MLST and were tested for the presence of mecA, Panton-Valentine leukocidin and arginine catabolic mobile element genes. MRSA contamination was shown in 72 buses (36.2%). The majority of the isolates belonged to three major clones: Clone A was identified as EMRSA-15 defined by pattern PFGE A, spa types t2357/t747/t025/t379/t910, ST22, and SCCmec IVh (n = 21; 29%). Clone B was the New York/Japan clone characterized by PFGE B-t002/t10682-ST5-II (n = 15; 21%). Clone C included isolates with characteristics of the international community-acquired USA300 or related clones, PFGE C-t008-ST8-IVa/IVc/IVg/IVnt/VI (n = 19; 26%). The first two clones are currently the two major lineages circulating in Portuguese hospitals. The hands of 15 individuals were contaminated with MRSA belonging to the nosocomial clones A or B. Eleven of these individuals were not nasal carriers of MRSA and all but one had travelled by public transportation, namely by bus, prior to sampling. In conclusion, public buses in two major cities in Portugal are often contaminated with MRSA representing clones dominant in hospitals in the particular geographic area. MRSA contamination of public transport and the transfer of the bacteria to the hands of passengers may represent a route through which hospital-acquired MRSA clones may spread to the community.

Online Brazilian Journal of Nursing , 2006,
Abstract: The objective of this bibliographical study was to analyze trends of use of the nursing assistance systematization languages in the dissertations and theses published in the catalogs of the Center of Study and Research in Nursing, in the period from 1979 to 2004. The sample was composed of 98 abstracts that constituted research about assistance systemization or that contemplated theories with own language to a nursing process. It was observed: The concentration of studies in the Southeast and Northeast regions; The utilization of the Nanda as nursing language; The application of the Basic Human Needs Theory; The development of studies about profile and validation of diagnosis. The trends of utilization of the founded languages in this study, as well as the evidenced gaps show the need of better knowledge and comprehension to nursing process elements that give base to the classifications at its utilization in the practice, in the research and in the teaching.
