Abstract: taking into consideration an external evaluation of a teacher education program, this paper intends to show the usefulness of case studies to appraise changes in teachers' perspectives and practices and to disclose the social impact of the program. first, a brief description of the teacher education program shows that it associates self instructional material and group meetings. next, the paper presents the program evaluation procedures: six case studies were conducted in three different states in the country, including classroom observations; analysis of teachers' written memories; interviews with teachers, tutors and local staff; and administration of teacher's written tests. the last part of the paper discusses the case studies main outcomes: changes in teachers' conceptions and practices; improvement in their writing abilities; improvement in teachers' self confidence; increasing teachers' evaluation of local culture and pupils' experiences; and positive effects in local policies and in schools contexts.

Abstract: the paper discusses some questions related to the attempts to safeguard quality of educational research. it shows that it have been many changes in research concepts, contexts and methodologies in the last years followed by issues on the nature of scientific knowledge, on the criteria to evaluate scientific work and on new methodologies assumptions. further, it analyses real situations of knowledge production and points out that it is mandatory to improve them.

Abstract: this paper aims to show the capacity of case studies to evidence changes in school contexts and in the concepts and practices of teachers who have taken part in proforma??o - a program for the development of teachers who are effectively teaching. the first part of the paper briefly describes the teacher development program, which aims at certifying untrained teachers working in the northern, north-eastern and centre-western areas of the country. in the second part the methodological procedures will be presented which were used in the development of six case studies, which included visits to the trainees? classrooms, interviews, analyses of memoirs and the application of assessment tests. the third part discusses the main results of the assessment study: changes in the teachers? pedagogical concepts and practices, improvement in their writing skills, in their self-esteem and in their perception of the local cultures with positive results in the local policies and the school contexts.

Abstract: the author analyzes the theory of the professionals' proletarianization with the objective of verifying to what extent it captures the real processes of change that have been affecting the professions. the central questions that the author addresses are whether professionals employed by public and private bureaucracies preserve their technical qualifications, and whether they preserve control over their highly specialized knowledge and over their work process. using an extensive bibliography on professional work in several industries (metal, mechanic, electronic), the author concludes that the evidences of growing employment of some of the liberal professions does not constitute support for the thesis of the professionals' proletarianization when this term is appropriately understood. the research has shown that even when the professional employee loses the control over his work conditions, he keeps the control over his own work, that is, he conserves his technical autonomy.

Abstract: O texto analisa o processo de constitui o do campo de forma o de professores, com base em cinco critérios propostos por Garcia (1999): existência de objeto próprio, metodologia específica, uma comunidade de cientistas que define um código de comunica o próprio, integra o dos participantes no desenvolvimento da pesquisa e reconhecimento da forma o de professores como um elemento fundamental na qualidade da a o educativa, por parte dos administradores, políticos e pesquisadores. Apoiado em pesquisas da área, assim como em várias iniciativas da comunidade científica, o texto conclui que houve muitos avan os, nos últimos dez anos, no sentido da constitui o de um campo aut nomo de estudos e aponta alguns caminhos para fortalecer a área.

O exame das rela es entre as políticas e as pesquisas mostra que o Estado Avaliador tem privilegiado as pesquisas que se baseiam em dados quantitativos, criando novos tipos de regula o e aumentando as tentativas de controle dos atores do sistema.

Abstract: O texto objetiva discutir quest es epistemológicas e metodológicas relacionadas à pesquisa em educa o. Argumenta, inicialmente, que há um interesse geral dos pesquisadores da área de educa o de encontrar critérios para avaliar a qualidade da pesquisa em educa o. A preocupa o decorre do grande crescimento da produ o científica nos últimos 20 anos, acompanhada de muitas mudan as nos temas, enfoques, metodologias e contextos das pesquisas. Destaca quest es referentes à natureza dos conhecimentos produzidos, aos critérios utilizados para julgar a pesquisa e aos pressupostos dos métodos quantitativos e qualitativos. Conclui mostrando as precárias condi es de produ o do trabalho científico tanto para os discentes quanto para os docentes e enumera alguns desafios a serem enfrentados.The aim of this text is to discuss methodological and epistemological questions related to research in Education. Initially, it is argued that there is general interest from researchers in the area of Education to find criteria to evaluate the quality of research in Education. The concern arises from the large increase of scientific production over the last twenty years, as well as many changes in themes, approaches, methodologies and contexts of research. Some questions are highlighted from those which refer to the nature of produced knowledge to the criteria used to judge research and the presuppositions of quantitative and qualitative methods. This work concludes by showing the precarious conditions of producing scientific work for students, as well as teaching staff and enumerates some challenges to be faced.
