Psychology (PSYCH) , 2016, DOI: 10.4236/psych.2016.76085
Abstract:

This study addressed the psychometric properties of the Children’s Social Skills Test (THAS-C). Results were divided into two parts. Initial studies investigated 257 children attending Grades 2 to 4 in public schools of two cities in the countryside of the state of São Paulo. Study 2 assessed 1381 children and adolescents aged 7 to 15 years from public and private schools in cities located in the countryside of the state of São Paulo. Infit and outfit indexes showed adequate fit for both items and people. A progression analysis using Rasch measurement model showed greater people’s ability in function of response categories. On the other hand, the outfit index suggested good fit in all categories. These data show relevance for the structure of three analysis categories. Few items showed DIF. Precision data obtained with these two methods showed satisfactory indexes. These data enable validity evidences based on the internal structure. Such findings may facilitate the assessment process and planning of interventions that are more focused on individual needs.

Abstract: this article describes the development of a social skills measure for elementary school children. 257 children, attending in second to fourth grades in public schools in the interior of s?o paulo state, aged from 8 to 11 years old (mean age 9 years, dp=0,77) were studied. the scale was composed by 99 items that described scholar interpersonal relationship situations. the data were analyzed by means of principal components analysis with varimax rotation and suggested a three factor structure explaining 38,42% of variance. the dimensions were altruism and civility (alpha=0,85); self-control and resourcefulness in the social interaction (alpha=0,60) and coping assertivity (alpha=0,47). the application of the instrument was made collectively, in the students' classrooms, and only to those students whose parents provided previous authorization. the instrument assesses social skill factors splitting the difficulty of behavior expression of each behavior, which can be useful in the planning of interventions. these data enables the instrument to be used in future research.

Abstract: this study aimed to assess the university students’ self-concept in statistics course and its relation to academic area, period, semester, age and gender of the sample. an identification questionnaire and a self-concept scale were answered by 116 psychology students and 32 pedagogy students. the sample consisted of eighteen to sixty-five year-old, 86% female and 58% evening period students. the thurstone scale with 21 items allowed classifying in low, appropriated and high self-concept. the analysis showed appropriated self-concept in 67% of participants. the principal results have revealed that there is positive correlation between self-concept and achievement in statistics course. on the other hand, it is not possible to state how the high self-concept contributed to a better student’s achievement. the limitations of this study suggested other studies related to this construct in the academic area of research.

Abstract: the aim of this work was to assess psychology students' attitudes toward statistics trough credit partial model of irt, and to identify the association among the students' attitudes, academic performance, and self-perception in statistics. a not random sample of 361 psychology students answered the identification questionnaire and the attitudes scale towards statistics. the students aged 18-65, 81% were female and 53% from evening classes. the likert scale is composed of 20 items, ten positives and ten negatives, which express the feelings towards statistics. there is one item which verifies the university student's self-perception towards its own performance in statistics. it was observed that the scale was reliable and valid to measure attitudes. the students presented their attitudes slightly more negative than positive. it was noticed the existence of positive and significant correlations among attitudes, academic performance and performance self-perception.

Abstract: the study of variables related to gender differences among undergraduates contributes to the comprehension of variables associated to their successful performance. therefore, this research aimed to verify how much the students performance at brazilian exam of students performance - enade, varied according to gender, and social-economic variables. the data used referred to 147,600 first-year and 129,876 senior students of several graduation courses who took enade exam in 2005, selected by stratified random sampling. the students answered a questionnaire with 110 questions on their cultural and social-economic profile. males obtained statistically higher means than females on both the general formation component and the specific knowledge in mathematics, language, biology, geography and philosophy. observed tendency of modification or even reversal of roles in areas traditionally recognized as stereotyped, which may reflect the process of education and social relations between peers and teachers.

Abstract: part of the national assessment of institutions of higher education considers student performance through enade. in this article we performed differential item function analysis of the enade that took place in 2006 trying to detect items with problems in measurement equivalence in the assessment of freshman and senior students and from public and private institutions. we analyzed a sample of 26,613 freshmen and seniors representative of all the courses in the country. we used the rasch analysis and logistic regression to detect dif. eleven of the 30 items composing the test showed dif. two types of dif were observed, one occurring in less discriminating items and the other in more discriminating items. the most relevant subgroup of items tends to favor students from public institutions. we also discuss the issue of discrimination parameter being an indicator of dif.
Charged Gravastar in a Dark Energy Universe  [PDF]

Journal of Modern Physics (JMP) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/jmp.2013.46118
Abstract:

Here we constructed a charged gravastar model formed by an interior de Sitter spacetime, a charged dynamical infinitely thin shell with an equation of state and an exterior de Sitter-Reissner-Nordstrom spacetime. We find that the presence of the charge is crucial to the stability of these structures. It can as much favor the stability of a bounded excursion gravastar, and still converting it in a stable gravastar, as make disappear a stable gravastar, depending on the range of the charge considered. There is also formation of black holes and, above certain values, the presence of the charge allows the formation of naked singularity. This is an important example in which a naked singularity emerges as a consequence of unstabilities of a gravastar model, which reinforces that gravastar is not an alternative model to black hole.

Abstract: the aim of this study was investigate relations between social skills and acceptance-rejection in college students. 126 college students attending at physical education course from a university of the interior of the state of s?o paulo were studied. the social skills assessment was taken by the inventário de habilidades sociais (ihs) and the sociometric measure was related to the rejection or acceptation of the students by their peers in the studying and go out situations. among the results, the acceptance in both situations was not explained by any of the social skills measures to men. to the women, in both situations acceptance were explained by the self-exposition to stranger's measure. this research clarifies some of the social behaviors that can be used in social skills training with men and women to avoid its rejection in the group and maximizes the acceptance.

Revista da Sociedade Brasileira de Medicina Tropical , 2004, DOI: 10.1590/S0037-86822004000400003
Abstract: in order to investigate epidemiological and clinical characteristics of visceral leishmaniasis in children up to 15 years old, a prospective study was carried out in alagoas, brasil from 1981 to 1995. of the 530 diagnosed cases, predominantly from the rural area of alagoas state, 58% were male and 42% female, being 55.3% children under 5 years old. the most frequently observed clinical manifestations were: hepatosplenomegaly, fever and parlor. the average size of the liver and the spleen of patients with shorter time of disease (<30 days) were smaller than those presenting sickness for a extended time (> 360 days). no matter the length of disease there was reduction of the liver and the spleen after treatment. however, the reduction of the spleen was higher in those patients with less time of sickness. with relation to liver that diference was not observed.
Dressing a Naked Singularity: an Example

Abstract: Considering the evolution of a perfect fluid with self-similarity of the second kind, we have found that an initial naked singularity can be trapped by an event horizon due to collapsing matter. The fluid moves along time-like geodesics with a self-similar parameter $\alpha = -3$. Since the metric obtained is not asymptotically flat, we match the spacetime of the fluid with a Schwarzschild spacetime. All the energy conditions are fulfilled until the naked singularity.
