The ‘Ferreira da Silva’ Chemistry Laboratory – a valuable asset in a university collection
Luis Bernardo,Marisa Monteiro
University Museums and Collections Journal , 2012,
Abstract: The relevant scientific and teaching activity in chemistry the Polytechnic Academy of Porto was involved in, at the turn of the 19th century, led to the decision of assigning a significant area of a building under construction for a new analytic chemistry laboratory. Several reasons are given why the Museum of Science has been proposing that this laboratory, a superb example of the University of Porto’s heritage, named after the prestigious chemist and Professor Ferreira da Silva, should be considered an item in itself in the museum’s overall collection, for its various valences, restored to its most valuable architecture and so preserved, to be appreciated also as a privileged exhibit scenario for the scientific instrument collection.

Abstract: this work was carried out in a poultry house (granja capuavinha), monte mor, state of s?o paulo, from february 1991 to april 1992 with the purpose of studying the synanthropic flies and their parasitoids. the pupae were extrated from manure using a water-flotation method. berlese-tullgren's funnel was used to extract parasitoids and fly larvae. each pupa was kept in a small transparent glass vial for 35 days until the emergence of the fly or parasitoid. after this period, the pupae that did not yield adult flies or parasitoids were dissected. the following species of fly were collected: chrysomya putoria (wiedeman), muscina stabulans (fallén), musca domestica l., fannia pusio (stein). in addition several species of sepsidae were also collected. the following species of parasitoids that emerged from fly pupae were collected: spalangia gemina (boucek), s. cameroni (perkins), muscidifurax raptoroides kogan & legner, pachycrepoideus vindemiae (rondani), nasonia vitripennis (walker) and trichopria sp. (diapriidae). tachinaephagus zealandicus (ashmead) (encyrtidae) a larval pupal parasitoid also ocurred. this is the first report of trichopria sp., a gregarious parasitoid, attacking pupae of c. putoria. about 13% of parasitoids did not eclode successfuly from the parasitoid pupae which may indicate a recent association between trichopria sp. and c. putoria in brazil.

Abstract: among dozens or hundreds of alternatives, choosing those which should make up the projects portfolio of an organization and which priority level is a complex multi-criteria decision matter. this work aims to apply a management model of projects portfolio, using the ahp (analytic hierarchy process) method and an integrated integer program. another purpose is to validate and evaluate the importance and use of the model to help the decision-making related to the selection, prioritization and balance of projects. thus, such a model was applied to select and prioritize the projects of a company in the chemical sector, chosen as the unit of analysis. the different scenarios obtained from the decision-making model proposed were compared to the real scenario of the company. since the author interacted in the company's decision-making not just as an observer, to carry out the study the research-action method was chosen, since it is the most suitable for the case. it could be noticed that the use of the model contributed first, to the strategic alignment of the projects, enabling the exchange of knowledge between the company representatives; secondly, it allows the simulation of strategic scenarios in real time, as well as verifying the impact of the projects portfolio; thirdly, it prioritizes the projects in a justifiable and structural manner through an established mathematical model; finally, it enables to allocate the resources based on priorities.

This article aims to understand the adjustment stage of project portfolio management, highlighting its relationship with the processes of categorization and balancing. It is a qualitative research. The longitudinal case study approach was adopted. The research was carried out in a Brazilian chemical company. Several sources of evidence were collected through interviews, documents and data from the enterprise's systems. Data from 1,000 projects between 2001 and 2005 were collected and analyzed in order to understand the project portfolio. The results indicated that more attention is given to the selection stage, neglecting the adjustment stage. The adoption of balancing tools showed gaps and sources of imbalance in the project portfolio, promoting discussion among decision makers regarding the bias introduced by the criteria in the selection stage and raising the need to introduce systematic adjustment and balance. It was possible to observe that without a proper project categorization, it would be difficult to promote the balancing analysis.

Abstract: several studies have been published concerning epstein-barr virus (ebv) infection and nasopharyngeal cancer (npc) development. the incidences of histological types are different according to endemic or non-endemic regions. latent ebv infection is found in almost all cases of npc in endemic regions, but normally absent in type i carcinomas, more common in non-endemic regions. aim: the purpose of this hospital-based study was to analyze the presence of ebv in nasopharyngeal tumor tissues and in peripheral blood of nasopharyngeal cancer patients and healthy individuals, in a low risk, non-endemic area. methods: ebv detection in samples of nasopharyngeal cancer patients and healthy individuals. results: this study indicates that the frequency of ebv positive cases in peripheral blood is higher in advanced tumor stages. conclusions: the incidence rates of npc have a distinct distribution. since the prevalence of this disease is low in occidental countries, little is known about the biology of these tumors in non-endemic areas. we observed statistically significant differences in ebv detection between the npc patient group and the control group. this study may help to understand the biological mechanisms of npc and the correlation of ebv infection with this disease, in a low risk, non-endemic region.
