Elementos para la evaluación eficaz de productos naturales con posibles efectos antihipertensivos
Guerrero,Mario Francisco;
Biomédica , 2009,
Abstract: within the context of experimental pharmacology, some criteria are discussed for estimating the potential of natural products with possible pharmacological activity for the treatment of hypertension. this disorder has great epidemiological impact in colombia as well as elsewhere. discovery of these products can be accomplished by use of accessible pharmacological tests such as the following: developing models of arterial hypertension in the laboratory rat, in vitro tests, in vivo tests and microscopic analysis. suitable protocols associated with these techniques can capture valuable information about possible effects on hypertension during the evaluation phase of a natural product.

Suitable protocols associated with these techniques can capture valuable information about possible effects on hypertension during the evaluation phase of a natural product.
Output stages inside a negative feedback loop: application to a low-voltage three-phase DC-AC converter for educational purposes
Francisco Llopis,Mario Jakas
Physics , 2013,
Abstract: The circuit presented in this paper aims at providing three 40 Vpp 50Hz AC voltages sources with 120-degree phase separation between them. This is a fully analogue circuit that uses standard, low-cost electronic components without resorting to a microcontroller as previously proposed by Shirvasar et al [1]. This circuit may serve as a basis for a low-voltage 3P-AC power supply that students may safely use to realize experiments, i.e. about the principles and applications of three-phase AC power lines, without the risk of electric shocks.

Abstract:

A Pleural mass biopsy was performed showing an invasive thymoma. Computed tomography (CT) scan of the chest performed on admission revealed a left sided pleural mass, anterior mediastinal mass, lymphadenopathy and pericardial effusion. Pleural mass biopsy showed an invasive thymoma. Due to her clinical presentation, a complete work-up was performed revealing paraneoplastic systemic lupus erythematous (SLE), myasthenia gravis (MG) and hypogammaglobulinemia. We reviewed the literature regarding thymoma and its relationship with paraneoplastic SLE, MG and hypogammaglobulinemia.

Distimia: características históricas e nosológicas e sua rela??o com transtorno depressivo maior
Spanemberg, Lucas;Juruena, Mario Francisco;
Revista de Psiquiatria do Rio Grande do Sul , 2004, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-81082004000300007
Abstract: dysthymia is a chronic and incapacitating form of depression that affects a substantial portion of the population (3-6%) and increases the risk for major depressive disorder. it is associated with significant disabilities and high comorbidity. the nosological status of dysthymia has been associated with considerable controversy over the past decades: some investigators regard it as a mood disorder, and others as a personality disorder. currently classified among the mood disorders, dysthymia is now a treatable disorder and should receive more attention in view of its associated morbidity. the present article reviews the main historic aspects of dysthymia, its nosological features and its relationship with major depressive disorder. we conclude that further studies are necessary in order to validate the concept of dysthymia and the spectrum of chronic diseases, in order to provide a better understanding of the disorder as well as evidence-based guidelines.
Theoretical analysis of the performance of a diffraction grating back- reflector in infrared-sensitive solar cells
Mario M. Jakas,Francisco Llopis
Physics , 2008,
Abstract: The increase of cell efficiency resulting from using a diffraction grating as a back reflector is investigated. An enhancement coefficient is introduced as a figure of merit that accounts for the ability of the rear grating to increase the generation of electric carriers. According to results in this paper, a diffraction-grating-like relief on the rear face of the photovoltaic cell may reduce the intensity of the specular reflection while favouring the intensity of high-angle rays. In this way, the path-length of reflected rays increases, and so does the efficiency of the cell.
Smoluchowski Diffusion Equation for Active Brownian Swimmers
Francisco J. Sevilla,Mario Sandoval
Physics , 2015, DOI: 10.1103/PhysRevE.91.052150
Abstract: We study the free diffusion in two dimensions of active-Brownian swimmers subject to passive fluctuations on the translational motion and to active fluctuations on the rotational one. The Smoluchowski equation is derived from a Langevin-like model of active swimmers, and analytically solved in the long-time regime for arbitrary values of the P\'eclet number, this allows us to analyze the out-of-equilibrium evolution of the positions distribution of active particles at all time regimes. Explicit expressions for the mean-square displacement and for the kurtosis of the probability distribution function are presented, and the effects of persistence discussed. We show through Brownian dynamics simulations that our prescription for the mean-square displacement gives the exact time dependence at all times. The departure of the probability distribution from a Gaussian, measured by the kurtosis, is also analyzed both analytically and computationally. We find that for P\'eclet numbers $\lesssim 0.1$, the distance from Gaussian increases as $\sim t^{-2}$ at short times, while it diminishes as $\sim t^{-1}$ in the asymptotic limit.
Light trapping within the grooves of 1D diffraction gratings under monochromatic and sunlight illumination
Mario M. Jakas,Francisco Llopis
Physics , 2011, DOI: 10.1364/JOSAB.28.002650
Abstract: The Rayleigh-Modal method is used to calculate the electromagnetic field within the grooves of a perfectly conducting, rectangular-shaped 1D diffraction grating. An \emph{enhancement coefficient} ($\eta$) is introduced in order to quantify such an energy concentration. Accordingly, $\eta >$1 means that the amount of electromagnetic energy present within the grooves is larger than that one will have, over the same volume, if the diffraction grating is replaced by a perfectly reflecting mirror. The results in this paper show that $\eta$ can be as large as several decades at certain, often narrow, ranges of wavelengths. However, it reduces to approximately 20% under sunlight illumination. In this latter case, such values are achieved when the \textit{optical spacing} between the grooves $dn$ is greater than 500 nm, where $d$ is the groove spacing and $n$ is the refractive index of the substance within the grooves. For $dn$ smaller than 500 nm the enhancement coefficient turns negligibly small.
Design and Development of a House-Mobile Security System  [PDF]
Ashraf Elfasakhany, Jorge Hernández, Juan Carlos García, Mario Reyes, Francisco Martell
Engineering (ENG) , 2011, DOI: 10.4236/eng.2011.312151
Abstract: The objective of this work is to design, develop and implement an alarm system that triggers the alarm and alerts the owner via a mobile text message if the house has been opened or an attempt has been made to open it illegally. The system will also feature two different forms of activation/deactivation and will automatically open or close the door for the user. The advantages of this house-mobile security system (HMSS) are its high security level, robustness, low cost and ease of use (uncomplicated) and that there is no distance limitation for contact. The system integrates different sensors via a microcontroller, which is the brain of the system, in order to avoid the problem of false alarms sent by other alarm monitoring systems to ‘Alarm Receiving Centers’ or Police departments. The HMSS is useful in homes, small businesses, offices, warehouses, etc.
