Experience (Mostly Negative) with the Use of Sympathomimetic Agents for Weight Loss
Mario A. Inchiosa Jr.
Journal of Obesity , 2011, DOI: 10.1155/2011/764584
Abstract: Sympathomimetic agents have a poor history of long-term success in the treatment of obesity. From earlier experiences with amphetamine and its analogs, to more recent drugs with direct effects on adrenergic receptors or indirect effects from release of catecholamines or inhibition of reuptake, cardiovascular toxicity (strokes and cardiac arrhythmias) has been the major concern. These concerns also extended to food supplements containing ephedra alkaloids and may require consideration for current supplements containing the sympathomimetic drug, synephrine.

Nota sobre la biologia de los depositos fangosos circalitorales frente a Punta del Este, Uruguay
Caches, Mario A.;
Boletim do Instituto Oceanográfico , 1980, DOI: 10.1590/S0373-55241980000200015
Abstract: a circalitoral muddy bottom community is studied off punta del este, uruguay. from this study a relevant fact is observed: the coexistence between deposit-feeders and suspension-feeders. it has long been thought that they are excludent trophic groups. the coexistence may be explained by the deposit stability favourished by a dense population of the tube-building polychaete onuphis setosa.

Pérdidas sanguíneas permisibles, modelo exponencial: an exponential model
García,Mario Javier;
Revista Colombiana de Anestesiología , 2009,
Abstract: this article proposes a simple, mathematically-derived formula which could be used for calculating allowable blood loss. authors have used lineal approaches in many models found in the medical literature; this introduces an important inaccuracy into such prediction. an exponential approach is deduced and explained in the model proposed here which is considered to be much closer to reality than that obtained with the lineal model. more emphasis is placed on the fact that while a patient is losing blood, he/she is simultaneously receiving fluids to keep total blood volume almost constant.
Registro de cáncer ginecológico Clínica San Pedro Claver, Bogotá, Colombia 2003
González,Mario A;
Revista Colombiana de Obstetricia y Ginecología , 2005,
Abstract: objective: reviewing new cases of gynaeco-logical cancer attending clínica san pedro claver, bogotá, colombia during 2003. material and methods: the clinic?s oncolo-gical gynaecology committee facilitated compiling data as all new patients benefiting from this service are interviewed by it; a search was made during clinical meetings, in consultants? offices, amongst hospitalised patients, of operating room schedules and pathological reports to ensure including all new cases. the data so collected was recorded in an excel file; epiinfo software was then used for analysing it. results: there were 158 cases of gynaecological cancer, cervical cancer being encountered most frequently (46%). this neoplasm was divided into exocervix (59 cases) and endocervix (16 cases) categories; the cancerous stage found most often in both was ib. surgery was most often employed as treatment for this type of cancer. endometrial cancer was found in 46 women. stage i (50%), endometroid cancer (55%) and sur-gery (55%) were the stages, histology and treatment most often found, respectively. 34 patients were found to have ovarian cancer, presenting the same ratio of stages i-ii as late stage iii-iv; serous histology was most frequently encountered (52.3%). a combination of surgery and chemotherapy were most often employed for treating this disease. conclusions: clínica san pedro claver?s insti-tutional records led to establishing the distribution of different gynaecological tumours being evaluated there, establishing related personal and clinical cha-racteristics and the types of therapy being received. cervical cancer was found to be the gynaecological cancer appearing most frequently during 2003 in clínica san pedro claver. this type of cancer can be detected by pap smear screening (cervical-vagi-nal cytology), meaning that screening/prevention programmes for this disease should be given high priority.
