Notch regulates the angiogenic response via induction of VEGFR-1

Abstract: Vascular endothelial growth factor-A (VEGF-A) is essential to the multistep process of vascular development, and proper vessel formation in a variety of settings is exquisitely sensitive to levels of VEGF-A [1-4]. VEGF-A signals through two receptor tyrosine kinases: VEGFR-1 (flt1) and VEGFR-2 (flk1), while placenta growth factor (PlGF) signals exclusively through VEGFR-1. Both VEGF-A and PlGF induce endothelial cell proliferation, survival, and migration [3,5,6]. The role of VEGFR-1 in angiogenesis has largely been defined in terms of its opposition to VEGFR-2. VEGFR-2 is considered the primary VEGF-A receptor that drives angiogenesis, while VEGFR-1 has high binding affinity for VEGF-A but weak kinase activity. Thus, VEGFR-1 is thought to function mainly as a decoy receptor that sequesters VEGF-A [7-11]. This concept is supported by analysis of mouse models where deletion of flt1 led to vessel overgrowth and disruption of vascular patterning [12]. In addition, mice expressing a mutant allele of flt1 that lacks the tyrosine kinase domain (flt1TK-/-) did not exhibit the vascular patterning defects seen in flt1-/-mice, suggesting that in embryonic development, the kinase activity of VEGFR-1 was dispensable and that its predominant function is via its high affinity binding to VEGF-A [9]. Despite this, a positive function for VEGFR-1 in angiogenesis has been demonstrated in a variety of settings. flt1TK-/- mice displayed defects in tumor vessel formation and metastasis [13,14], and inhibition of VEGFR-1 led to defects in neovascularization of the eye [15]. Between 1928 and 1953, Joseph Stalin was the undisputed totalitarian dictator of the former Soviet Union whose “reign of fear” continues to maintain its egregious reputation. An examination of Stalin’s documented behaviors attempts to evaluate any signs of psychopathology in accordance with DSM-IV-TR criteria. Evidence of a troubled upbringing, depression, paranoia, and alcohol abuse suggests psychopathology as an implicating factor behind Stalin’s actions. Utilizing such a perspective may allow for future distinctions of individuals deemed responsible for horrendous atrocities.

The Role of Group Size and Correlated Project Outcomes in Group Lending  [PDF]

Abstract: This paper analyzes contract efficiency with regard to correlated project realization and the size of the borrowers in group lending. Firstly, I show that under the standard assumption of independent project payoffs, the expected group cost of default decreases with group size. Secondly, I show that small groups can also optimize group efficiency if individual payoffs and credit risks are correlated. The results outline that social cost minimization occurs due to a common interest in forming optimal borrower groups between lenders and borrowers.

Abstract: This paper fits into the research stream started by Aumann and Serrano (2008) with their index RAS, and introduces a new index of riskiness called Iθ. In particular, our intuition moves from the observation that the RAS index is defined over the set of gambles whose expected value of losses is lower than the one of gains. We then restrict the attention on investment opportunities in a proper relation with a benchmark value \"\" and we build the index Iθ. The mathematical features of the new index are discussed in deepest detail, providing evidence that Iθ can be used by the investor in comparing risks: θ plays the role of a threshold value such that once fixed in the range (0,1] , Iθ suggests to take into consideration a gamble (an investment, an asset) g only if the ratio between the expected value of its losses and the expected value of its gains is lower than such θ. Moreover, Iθ nests RAS as special case when θ = 1, and it satisfies both homogeneity and duality properties. In the light of these features, Iθ seems to satisfy the common need among practitioners for flexible index of riskiness.

Abstract: Well-studied therapies have proven to be effective in treating Granulomatosis with polyangiitis (formerly Wegener’s granulomatosis) (GPA). There has been considerable improvement in survival of patients with GPA but treatment related morbidity and mortality remains still high, particularly in patients with renal disease. We describe a case of 64-year old woman with recent onset GPA, who responds well to the initial cyclophosphamide based therapy but latter develops a fatal stroke. Infectious complications should be considered in patients with GPA who are on adequate immunosuppression but develop symptoms that may mimic a relapse. Aggressive diagnostic interventions should be undertaken to discriminate between an infection and a relapse of GPA.

This article addresses the problem of the place of philosophy in higher education today through the analysis of a single issue: the standardization of academic writing and its effects on the practice of philosophy and teaching. From the formal analysis of the academic “paper”, as the unique pattern of production and evaluation of current research, this article evaluates its impact on the relationship between thinking, writing and education. It concludes that standardization of writing in the globally homologated university, leads to a stifling of thought not only in philosophy but in all areas of knowledge. At the same time gives us the key to diagnose and locate, in each of these areas, what are the spaces of the non-negotiable from which we must rethink our relationship with education and thinking inside and outside the university.

Analysis of critical issues in case management for liver retransplantation  [PDF]

We report a case of a patient who underwent successful combined liver-kidney transplant after two prior liver transplantations. The topic of liver retransplantation is very controversial. Given the critical organ shortage, the question arises as to whether hepatic retransplantation should be offered liberally despite its greater cost, and inevitable denial of access to primary transplantation for the other patients on the waiting list. We suggest that careful selection of the retransplant candidates will improve outcomes and allow rational use of the limited organ supply. Analysis of the available literature allows us to identify the main predictors of morbidity and mortality for this patient population. It also enables development of a detailed plan for perioperative management. The role of transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) as a monitor in the complex liver transplant cases is also discussed. Our report is a significant contribution to the very limited data available on the subject of multiple liver retransplants.

Quick Single Run Capillary Zone Electrophoresis Determination of Active Ingredients and Preservatives in Pharmaceutical Products  [PDF]

The paper deals with the development of a rapid and efficient Capillary Zone Electrophoresis (CZE) method for Quality Control analysis of pharmaceutical preparations containing antihistamines, decongestants, anticholinergic remedies and preservatives. Active ingredients of interest are: ChlorPheniramine Maleate (CPM), DiPhenhydramine Hydrochloride (DPH), Ephedrine hydrochloride (E), Isopropamide Iodide (II), Pheniramine Maleate (PM), Lidocaine hydrochloride (L), Tetracaine hydrochloride (T), Clopamide Hydrochloride (CH), DiHydroErgochristine (DHE), PhenylEphrine hydrochloride (PE) and Acetaminophen (A). Preservatives studied are: MethylParaben (MeP), EthylParaben (EtP), PropylParaben (PrP), ButylParaben (BuP), p-HydroxyBenzoic Acid (p-HBA). All these analytes were separated in a single run using 60 mM tetraborate buffer solution (TBS) pH = 9.2 as a BackGround Electrolyte (BGE) by using an uncoated fused silica capillary of I.D. = 50 mm and applying a voltage of 25 kV in the first part of the electropheretic run (up to 5.8 min) and 30 kV for the remaining time. The hydrodynamic pressurization of the inlet vial was 20 psi at 7.2 min. up to the end of analysis. Total separation time was of 7.5 min. The method was then successfully validated and applied to the simultaneous determination of active ingredients and preservatives. Good repeatability, linearity, and sensitivity were demonstrated. Precision of migration time (tm) was RSD% < 0.53% and of corrected peak area (Ac) was RSD% < 6.15%. The linearity evaluation gave 0.9928 < r2 < 1.000. LOD and LOQ, accuracy (recovery) and ruggedness were evaluated for each analyte demonstrating the good reliability of the method. Analyses of some pharmaceutical real samples were performed.

Noninvasive Cardiac Testing—A New Routine in Evaluation of Renal Transplant Candidates  [PDF]

We report a case of a young kidney transplant candidate presented with severe and clinically completely asymptomatic mitral stenosis. The bedside Echocardiogram was helpful to establish the diagnosis. The surgery had to be postponed and the patient was referred to a cardiologist for the further workup. This case report provides solid evidence that the renal transplant candidates are a very unique group of patients with specific disease development course. Their preoperative workup cannot be based on widely used guidelines from American College of Cardiology and American Heart Association that are relying on clinical symptoms and presentation of cardiac disease. All physicians who are involved in the care of these patients and making decisions about their candidacy for the transplantation should take into account severity and very often asymptomatic presentation of the cardiovascular complications of the end stage renal disease. This case provides a good example of the importance of the multispecialty involvement and coordination in perioperative care for prospective kidney transplant candidates.
