Brazilian Journal of Botany , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-84042010000300011
Abstract: (foliar and calycine colleters of temnadenia violacea (apocynaceae, apocynoideae): structure and distribution). the present work describes the origin, structure and position of the colleters on vegetative and floral apices of temnadenia violacea (vell.) miers and confirms the presence of mucilage in the secretion produced by those structures. the number of foliar colleters ranges from 9 to 11 per primordium and from 18 to 22 per node; only one has an axilar origin, while the others originate along the margins. concerning position, five of them are petiolar and the others are interpetiolar. there are two types of foliar colleters: standard and sessile, and they consist of a main body composed of a central core of elongated parenchyma cells surrounded by a secretory palisade epidermis and a thin cuticle. tector trichomes and vascular tissue occur only on the distal marginal colleters. on the floral apices, the calycine colleters are formed at the base of the calyx, three of them opposite the sepals. all of the calycine colleters have a central core of elongated parenchyma cells, a secretory palisade epidermis, a thin cuticle, and are sessile. the calycine colleters are not vascularized and the laticifers are narrow. mucilage was detected in the secretion of both foliar and calycine colleters.

Abstract: Screening and counselling for HIV and HCV infections was offered free of charge to all pregnant women attending antenatal clinic (ANC) in the public health system, in Goiania city (~1.1 million inhabitants) during 2004–2005. Initial screening was performed on a dried blood spot collected onto standard filter paper; positive or indeterminate results were confirmed by a second blood sample. HCV infection was defined as a positive or indeterminate sample (EIA test) and confirmed HCV-RNA technique. HIV infection was defined according to standard criteria. Factors associated with HIV and HCV infections were identified with logistic regression. The number needed to screen (NNS) to prevent one case of infant HIV infection was calculated using the Monte Carlo simulation method.A total of 28,561 pregnant women were screened for HCV and HIV-1 in ANC. Mean maternal age was 23.9 years (SD = 5.6), with 45% of the women experiencing their first pregnancy. Prevalence of HCV infection was 0.15% (95% CI 0.11%–0.20%), and the risk increased with age (p < 0.01). The prevalence of anti-HIV infection was 0.09% (95% CI 0.06%–0.14%). Black women had a 4.9-fold (95% CI 1.42–16.95) greater risk of HIV-1 infection compared to non-black women. NNS to prevent one case of infant HIV infection ranged from 4,141 to 13,928.The prevalence of HIV and HCV infections were low among pregnant women, with high acceptability rates in the opt-in strategy in primary care. Older maternal age was a risk factor for HCV and antenatal HCV testing does not fulfill the requirements for screening recommendation. The finding of higher risk of HIV-1 infection among black women despite being in consonance with the HIV-1 ethnic pattern in some American regions cannot be ruled out to be a surrogate marker of socio-economic condition.Hepatitis C virus and HIV infections are a major burden to public health worldwide and share common blood-borne transmission routes. Approximately 130 million individuals are HCV-infected, w

Andrade, Gilmara S.;Guimar?es, Adriana G.;Santana, Marilia T.;Siqueira, Rosana S.;Passos, Luiz O.;Machado, Samísia M. F.;Ribeiro, Adauto de S.;Sobral, Marcos;Almeida, Jackson R. G. S.;Quintans-Júnior, Lucindo J.;
Revista Brasileira de Farmacognosia , 2012, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-695X2011005000205
Abstract: this report aimed to investigate the chemical composition and possible antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory effects of the essential oil from fresh leaves of myrcia pubiflora dc., myrtaceae (eomp), through different experimental tests. the essential oil of m. pubiflora (eomp) was obtained by hydrodistillation, analyzed by gc-ms, and tested at doses of 25, 50, and 100 mg/kg (i.p.) in three different tests of nociception (acetic acid-induced writhing test, formalin test, and hot plate test) and one test of inflammation (leukocyte migration to the peritoneal cavity) in order to evaluate the motor activity in mice treated with eomp. the major component of eomp was caryophyllene oxide (22.16%). this oil significantly reduced the number of writhes in an acetic acid test and the time spent licking the paw at the second phase of the formalin test. furthermore, eomp inhibited the carrageenan-induced leukocyte migration to the peritoneal cavity. however, administration of eomp did not alter reaction time in the hot plate test, and did not affect the motor coordination test. these results indicate antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory properties of eomp probably mediated via inhibition of inflammatory mediator synthesis or other peripheral pathway.

Abstract This article presents an analysis based on bibliographic and documentary research and aims to show the relationship between secularity and freedom of conscience, differentiating it from religious freedom. The text shows an overview of national and foreign thinkers who have reflected on the issue of secularism and the events that have led do the separation of church and state in France (considered as the country of the secularism) and in Brazil. It also clarifies some basic concepts, including the concept of secularism, often wrongly taken as anticlericalism in the Country. This text presents the genesis of secularism and concludes by relating the defense of secularism by the state with in defense of individual rights to freedom of conscience, always taking into account the required legislation. Finally, the present text started from the following statement of Lacordaire - "Between the strong and the week (...), is the freedom which oppresses and the law that liberates" - it used other quotes by the same author, it analyzed some collected documents, and then it returned to the statement of Lacordaire. Key words: Secularity; freedom of conscience; religious freedom.
