Micieli,Cristina;
T?3picos , 2007,
Abstract: ricoeur elaborates a trend of thought about history which shows that behind the analysis of the great periods or historical legalities, the notion of event [happening]remains obscured. from my point of view, the event is the undoubtedly haphazard irruption of an excess which causes the failure of constituted knowledge and obliges to construct a new truth of the situation, i.e., a new way of comprehending it. ricoeur speaks of representance, and not of reference or representation. representation being the hegemonic mode of thought which accompanies the advent of modernity, in which the subject of conscience -which is after all always selfconscience- becomes grounding substance. from my point of view, the recoeurian concept of representance surpasses, the presentation/representation device, inasmuch as it gives all its power to what conceals itself form presentation. in fact, there is no relation of production o reduplication between historical narration and past events. the concept of representance distinguishes itself from that of representation because the reference to past is metaphoric. and this metaphor is characterized by a seeing as which has its correlate in a being as. it is a being and not being at the same time. in this article the concepts of event, representance trace and historical truth are bound toghether.

Ricoeur elaborates a trend of thought about history which shows that behind the analysis of the great periods or historical legalities, the notion of event [happening]remains obscured. In fact, there is no relation of production o reduplication between historical narration and past events. The concept of representance distinguishes itself from that of representation because the reference to past is metaphoric. And this metaphor is characterized by a seeing as which has its correlate in a being as. It is a being and not being at the same time.

Abstract: Downregulation of the muscle-specific microRNA-1 (miR-1) mediates the induction of pathologic cardiac hypertrophy. Dysfunction of the gap junction protein connexin 43 (Cx43), an established miR-1 target, during cardiac hypertrophy leads to ventricular tachyarrhythmias (VT). However, it is still unknown whether miR-1 and Cx43 are interconnected in the pro-arrhythmic context of hypertrophy. Thus, in this study we investigated whether a reduction in the extent of cardiac hypertrophy could limit the pathological electrical remodeling of Cx43 and the onset of VT by modulating miR-1 levels. Wistar male rats underwent mechanical constriction of the ascending aorta to induce pathologic left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) and afterwards were randomly assigned to receive 10mg/kg valsartan, VAL (LVH+VAL) delivered in the drinking water or placebo (LVH) for 12 weeks. Sham surgery was performed for control groups. Programmed ventricular stimulation reproducibly induced VT in LVH compared to LVH+VAL group. When compared to sham controls, rats from LVH group showed a significant decrease of miR-1 and an increase of Cx43 expression and its ERK1/2-dependent phosphorylation, which displaces Cx43 from the gap junction. Interestingly, VAL administration to rats with aortic banding significantly reduced cardiac hypertrophy and prevented miR-1 down-regulation and Cx43 up-regulation and phosphorylation. Gain- and loss-of-function experiments in neonatal cardiomyocytes (NCMs) in vitro confirmed that Cx43 is a direct target of miR-1. Accordingly, in vitro angiotensin II stimulation reduced miR-1 levels and increased Cx43 expression and phosphorylation compared to un-stimulated NCMs. Finally, in vivo miR-1 cardiac overexpression by an adenoviral vector intra-myocardial injection reduced Cx43 expression and phosphorylation in mice with isoproterenol-induced LVH. In conclusion, miR-1 regulates Cx43 expression and activity in hypertrophic cardiomyocytes in vitro and in vivo. Treatment of pressure overload-induced myocyte hypertrophy reduces the risk of life-threatening VT by normalizing miR-1 expression levels with the consequent stabilization of Cx43 expression and activity within the gap junction.

Fundamentals of cone regression
Mariella Dimiccoli
Statistics , 2015,
Abstract: Cone regression is a particular case of quadratic programming that minimizes a weighted sum of squared residuals under a set of linear inequality constraints. Several important statistical problems such as isotonic, concave regression or ANOVA under partial orderings, just to name a few, can be considered as particular instances of the cone regression problem. Given its relevance in Statistics, this paper aims to address the fundamentals of cone regression from a theoretical and practical point of view. Several formulations of the cone regression problem are considered and, focusing on the particular case of concave regression as example, several algorithms are analyzed and compared both qualitatively and quantitatively through numerical simulations. Several improvements to enhance numerical stability and bound the computational cost are proposed. For each analyzed algorithm, the pseudo-code and its corresponding code in Scilab are provided. The results from this study demonstrate that the choice of the optimization approach strongly impacts the numerical performances. It is also shown that methods are not currently available to solve efficiently cone regression problems with large dimension (more than many thousands of points). We suggest further research to fill this gap by exploiting and adapting classical multi-scale strategy to compute an approximate solution.
Slab Percolation and Phase Transitions for the Ising Model
Emilio De Santis,Rossella Micieli
Mathematics , 2004,
Abstract: We prove, using the random-cluster model, a strict inequality between site percolation and magnetization in the region of phase transition for the d-dimensional Ising model, thus improving a result of [CNPR76]. We extend this result also at the case of two plane lattices Z^2x{0,1} (slabs) and give a characterization of phase transition in this case. The general case of N slabs, with N an arbitrary positive integer, is partially solved and it is used to show that this characterization holds in the case of three slabs with periodic boundary conditions. However in this case we do not obtain useful inequalities between magnetization and percolation probability.
