Lymphogranuloma venereum: "a clinical and histopathological chameleon?"
Tchernev, Georgi;Salaro, Cristina;Costa, Mariana Carvalho;Patterson, James W.;Nenoff, Pietro;
Anais Brasileiros de Dermatologia , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S0365-05962010000400015
Abstract: lymphogranuloma venereum is an infection caused by a variety of the bacterium chlamydia trachomatis. both genital and extragenital manifestations of the disease can cause serious differential diagnostic difficulties, indirectly leading to progression and dissemination of the infection. this work describes cases of patients with lymphogranuloma venereum showing atypical clinical and/or histopathological findings. it also focuses on alternative therapeutic approaches, such as surgical excision at stage 1, that may lead to a positive outcome. it is not completely clear whether histopathological findings of lymphogranuloma venereum can reveal progression or changes in the course of the disease over time, as is the case in other diseases. we conclude that both clinical and histopathological observations in a larger number of patients are needed in order to further evaluate the findings presented in this article.
Composi??o tecidual e centesimal e teor de colesterol da carne de cordeiros terminados em confinamento com dietas contendo níveis crescentes de resíduo úmido de cervejaria
Carvalho, Sérgio;Brochier, Mariana Augusta;
Ciência Rural , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-84782008000700035
Abstract: the purpose of this experiment was to evaluate the influence of different levels of substitution of the concentrate by brewery's residue on the tissue composition, centesimal composition and cholesterol content in the meat of lambs finished in feedlot. twenty-five male, non castrated texel lambs were used, distributed in five treatments, which consisted in the levels of brewery's residue replacing concentrate, being 0%, 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% of substitution. diet's composition was tifton-85 hay and concentrate mixture, in a relation roughage:concentrate of 40:60, on dry matter (dm). the concentrate was composed of corn ground grain, soybean meal, mineral mix and brewery's residue, and its proportion varied in accordance with the treatments. the diets were formulated to be isoproteics, based on the crude protein (cp) level of the treatment with the higher level of residue. the lambs were slaughtered after 77 days of experiment. it was observed, in the section between 9th and 11th ribs, that the weights of bone, muscle and fat had linearly decreased, and the proportion of muscle had linearly increased with the increase of the level of the residue. there was a linear increase in the proportion of humidity in the longissimus dorsi muscle with the increase of the brewery's residue on the lamb's diets.
Aspectos ambientais, produtivos e econ?micos do aproveitamento de resíduo úmido de cervejaria na alimenta??o de cordeiros em sistema de confinamento
Brochier, Mariana Augusta;Carvalho, Sérgio;
Ciência e Agrotecnologia , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S1413-70542009000500028
Abstract: the objectives of this work were to evaluate the generation and the pollutant power of brewery residues and to determinate the productive and economic aspects of the use of this residue as replacement to the concentrate meal on the diet of lamb in feedlots as the finishing phase. twenty-five male, non-castrated texel lambs, single born, weaned at the age of 69 days were used. they were offered diets with five levels (0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%) of brewery residues replacing the meal concentrate. the lambs were slaughtered 77 days after the installation of the experiment. for every 100 kg barley grain used as source material, 132.02 kg of brewery residue was generated. the brewery residue was classified as class iia and showed ph value of 4.63, for bod5 of 659 mg o2 l-1 and for cod of 10769.9 mg o2 l-1, revealing that this residue has high pollutant charge. there was a quadratic effect on the dry matter food intake and a decreasing linear effect on the daily weight gain and the cold carcass weight with the increase in the level of brewery residues. the economical analysis showed that there was a linear decrease in the feed costs with the increase of the quantity of brewery residues in the diets. however, no effect of the inclusion level of the brewery residues on the profit related to live animal or carcass sales was verified.

Costa, Mariana Carvalho;Abraham, Leonardo Spagnol;Barcaui, Carlos;
Anais Brasileiros de Dermatologia , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S0365-05962011000400028
Abstract: dermoscopy has its usefulness well established in the diagnostic evaluation of melanocytic lesions. recently, however, it has also shown to be an important tool in monitoring therapeutic response to various dermatoses. we report the case of an elderly patient diagnosed with lentigo maligna of difficult surgical management, which we have chosen to treat with topical imiquimod. the dermoscopic monitoring of this alternative therapy has shown to be of great usefulness
Subendocardial fibrosis in remote myocardium results from reduction of coronary driving pressure during acute infarction in rats
Frimm, Clovis de Carvalho;Koike, Marcia Kiyomi;Cúri, Mariana;
Arquivos Brasileiros de Cardiologia , 2003, DOI: 10.1590/S0066-782X2003000500004
Abstract: objective: to investigate the role of hemodynamic changes occurring during acute mi in subsequent fibrosis deposition within non-mi. methods: by using the rat model of mi, 3 groups of 7 rats each [sham, smi (mi <30%), and lmi (mi >30%)] were compared. systemic and left ventricular (lv) hemodynamics were recorded 10 minutes before and after coronary artery ligature. collagen volume fraction (cvf) was calculated in picrosirius red-stained heart tissue sections 4 weeks later. results: before surgery, all hemodynamic variables were comparable among groups. after surgery, lv end-diastolic pressure increased and coronary driving pressure decreased significantly in the lmi compared with the sham group. lv dp/dtmax and dp/dtmin of both the smi and lmi groups were statistically different from those of the sham group. cvf within non-mi interventricular septum and right ventricle did not differ between each mi group and the sham group. otherwise, subendocardial (se) cvf was statistically greater in the lmi group. se cvf correlated negatively with post-mi systemic blood pressure and coronary driving pressure, and positively with post-mi lv dp/dtmin. stepwise regression analysis identified post-mi coronary driving pressure as an independent predictor of se cvf. conclusion: lv remodeling in rats with mi is characterized by predominant se collagen deposition in non-mi and results from a reduction in myocardial perfusion pressure occurring early on in the setting of mi.
