Abstract: Introduction: Cerebrovascular accident (CVA) is the second most frequent cause of death in the world. Nevertheless, most victims do survive and need treatment, and hand function is one that has to be dealt with in the rehabilitation process. Kinesio®?Taping (KT) is a bandaging method that can be applied along the muscle fibers to provide stimulation. Studies have shown its efficacy in providing afferent stimuli to weakened muscles, thus eliciting contraction with greater recruiting of motor units and inducing neuroplasticity. Benefits to the paresthesia hand have not been reported. Objective: Investigate the effects of KT on hand function in hemiparetic patients. Material and Methods: An evaluator-blinded, randomized clinical trial involving stroke victims was carried out in a physical therapy outpatient clinic. One group underwent KT intervention and the other was a control group. The Modified Ashworth Scale (MAS) and the Box and Block Test (BBT) were used as assessment tools. A data entry form was used in the Epi-info 7 software and descriptive statistics was thus calculated. The software BioStat 5.0 was employed when doing statistical tests. Associations were regarded as statistically significant when p < 0.05. Results: Eight individuals were randomly assigned to two groups. All those who had received treatment with KT had spasticity improved by one point, but there was no significant improvement in BBT. Conclusion: KT was effective when it came to improving spasticity and it may be an option in rehab, but it had no effect on gross manual dexterity. Nevertheless, it can be of help as part of a functional training program.

Abstract: We report on a 48 years-old man with basilar impression without syringohydromyelia, in which the cisterna magna was impacted by the cerebellar tonsils. Six months after posterior fossa decompression there was the disappearance of nuchal rigidity, vertigo, spastic paraparesis and improvement of balance. Nevertheless hyperreflexia and diminished pallesthesia of the lower limbs persisted.

Abstract: visceral leishmaniasis (kala-azar) was definitively an important disease of the state of maranh?o-brasil since 1982. since of then, many authors have been working with this topic in spite of reports. nevertheless, the aspects of diagnosis, treatment an control of cure went through still hard worried the authors have been studing the disease, that came at s?o luís island since of the desestabilization of the ecotops of lutzomya longipalpis, most important sandflies bites. after 1993 the constatation of cases with bad response to pentavalent antimonial (glucantime?) comes to add the other worries. this actual trial accost the disease and conclude about an existence of failures to glucantime? being important to have much vigilance in the diagnosis, treatment and control of cure of the patients.

Abstract: background: deep venous thrombosis (dvt) is a frequent and severe disease. prophylaxis is the best means to reduce its incidence, lowering morbidity and mortality rates caused by its complications. in a cost-effectiveness ratio, it is better to maintain a prophylactic routine than to treat an established disease. objective: to verify whether dvt prophylaxis is being properly and routinely used at hospital escola doutor josé carneiro (hejc), in maceió, brazil. methods: a descriptive, cross-sectional study at hejc was carried out for a 6-month period. the sample was composed of 298 patients within different specialties. data were collected from medical records, and divided into clinical (68.5%) and surgical (31.5%). how dvt prophylaxis was performed was analyzed for each patient. clinical, pharmacological and surgical factors were investigated for all patients. based on these data, risk stratification was performed in accordance with the classification recommended by sociedade brasileira de angiologia e cirurgia vascular. statistical analysis was performed using software spss and the qui-square and bivariate correction tests, considering p value < 0.05. results: of the 298 patients analyzed, 204 belonged to medical clinic, in which 28.9% were low risk, 60.3% average risk and 10.8% high risk for dvt; and 94 patients belonged to surgical clinic, in which 43.6% were low risk, 52.1% average risk and 4.3% high risk. only 23% of patients in the clinical group and 2.1% in the surgical group were given adequate prophylaxis. conclusion: despite the efficiency of prophylaxis for dvt having been confirmed, it does not reach satisfactory levels in our country.

Arquivos de Neuro-Psiquiatria , 2005, DOI: 10.1590/S0004-282X2005000500030
Abstract: we describe a rare case of a 30 year-old woman with intense vertiginous sensation, lack of body balance and a tendency to fall backwards, making it necessary for two people to sustain her. the magnetic resonance imaging of the craniocervical junction evidenced tonsilar herniation at the inferior level of c1, and during the operation performed in sitting position, we observed crowding of the cerebellar tonsils at the level of c3. after the osteo-dural-neural decompression, the symptomatology remitted on the same day of the operation.

Arquivos de Neuro-Psiquiatria , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S0004-282X2007000700027
Abstract: a 29-year-old woman with acute lancinating headache, throbbed nuchal pain and subacute paraparesis underwent brain mri in supine position that depicted: the absence of the cisterna magna, filled by non herniated cerebellar tonsils and compression of the brain stem and cisternae of the posterior fossa, which are aspects of the impacted cisterna magna without syringomyelia and without hydrocephalus. during eight days, pain was constant and resistant to drug treatment. osteodural-neural decompression of the posterior fossa, performed with the patient in sitting position, revealed: compression of the brainstem, fourth ventricle and foramen of magendie by herniated cerebellar tonsils, which were aspirated. immediately after surgery, the headache and nuchal pain remmited. mri depicted the large created cisterna magna and also that the cerebellar tonsils did not compress the fourth ventricle, the foramen of magendie and the brainstem, besides the enlargement of posterior fossa cisternae. four months after surgery, headache, nuchal pain and paraparesis had disappeared but hyperactive patellar and achilles reflexes remained.

Abstract: objective: to identify factors associated with functional loss in older adults living in the urban area. methods: a cross-sectional study was carried out with a population-based sample of 319 elderly individuals from the municipality of maceió (northeastern brazil), in 2009. to obtain the functional impairment data the brazilian older americans resources and services multidimensional functional assessment questionnaire was used. a descriptive analysis, the chi-square test and a regression analysis for crude prevalence ratio were used, and the significance level that was adopted was p <0.05. results: the majority of participants were females (65.8%) and the mean age was 72 years (sd = 8.83). the prevalence of moderate/severe impairment was 45.5%, and the associated factors were being 75 years old or older, having up to four years of schooling, reporting two or more chronic diseases and being single. conclusions: the characteristics of the elderly with functional impairment reflect inequalities and potential impacts of this population segment on the health services.
