Abstract: Background: Cystinosis is a multisystemic autosomal recessive deficiency of the lysosomal membrane transporter protein (cystinosin) caused by mutations in CTNS gene. Objective: This study summarizes the Portuguese experience in the diagnosis and management of patients with this rare disease over the past few years and reports recurrent mutations in the CTNS gene. Methods: Unrelated patients from different pediatric and adult hospitals all over Portugal with non-nephrotic proteinuria, hypercalciuria, hypokalemia impaired proximal reabsorption of amino acids, glycosuria and hypophosphatemia, suggestive of a Fanconi syndrome and ocular problems, were studied. Intra-leukocyte cystine levels were determined and molecular analysis was performed, to determine the presence or absence of the 57-kb deletion in CTNS, followed by direct sequencing of the coding exons of CTNS. Results: From 1998 to 2017, twenty-one cystinotic patients were biochemically diagnosed. From the remaining

Abstract: This paper reflects the current situation surrounding indigenous teacher education by means of the construction of a dialogue among three educators, two of them nonindigenous educators involved with indigenous school education and one indigenous educator committed to the education of his people. Teacher education, situated in a socio-cultural way, is the center of attention in this paper. “Listening” as a way of talking with the “other” is one of the theoretical focuses of this exercise between teacher educators and teachers, which uses dialogue as a means to increase awareness. In the dialogic process mentione, it was possible to realize how rich a dynamic between educators from different cultural contexts can be. The desire of the indigenous educator and his/her people to contribute their ideas to the construction of the indigenous school became evident. This shows the great challenge for non-indigenous educators seeking to contribute to the organization of the school education of distinct indigenous nations. Keywords: Intercultural Dialogue. Teacher Education. Indigenous School Education.

Abstract: Coastal beach vegetation in the Amazon River delta (Pará and Amapá states, Brazil) occupies an estimated area of 1000 km2, less than 0,1% of the area occupied by other types of Amazonian vegetation. This study aims to characterize beach ecosystems of the northern Brazilian states of Pará and Amapá, based on their floristic composition (including the first species checklist for the region), vegetation classification, and geomorphology, and to establish a classification of the different types of beach vegetation in Amazonian coastal areas. Ten areas of beach vegetation were investigated on the Pará and Amapá coasts. The checklist includes 365 plant species in 237 genera and 88 families, with information on life forms, popular names, predominant vegetation community, and geographical occurrences along the coast. Three phases of beach vegetation are recognized: (1) pioneer or establishment phase, (2) intermediate or transition phase, and (3) consolidation phase. Amazonian beach ecosystems are unprotected since they lie outside of any non-use conservation unit. It is urgent that they be included in protected areas because of their vulnerable and restricted floras, some species of which are threatened with local extinction due to current high levels of human exploitation of these areas.

Brazilian Archives of Biology and Technology , 1999, DOI: 10.1590/S1516-89131999000200011
Abstract: experiments were carried out in order to test the efficiency of additions of secondary sewage as a culture medium for chaetoceros gracilis and thalassiosira sp (chrysophyceae) under laboratory conditions. these algae were cultivated in sea water with concentrations of 10%, 20%, 30% and 40% of wastewater. the results were compared with those obtained by the nutritive medium f2 of guillard (1975). the best results in terms of cellular densities were observed at 40% additions. there were significant differences (significance levels of 5%) between the nutritive medium f2 and the 40% additions for both the species. maximum cellular densities observed for all additions tested were, 4,125.00 x 103 cells/ml for chaetoceros gracilis on the ninth day and 834.00 x 103 cells/ml for thalassiosira sp on the fifth day. biomass was higher in the nutritive medium f2 than in the other treatments, reaching average values of 2,363μg/ml for chaetoceros gracilis. at all experimental units, the best results were registered at 40% addition for chaetoceros gracilis, where average values of 0.768μg/ml were observed on the fifth day, and at 30% additions for thalassiosira sp where 0.883μg/ml were observed on the thirteenth day. it was concluded that secondary sewage could be used as a culture medium for the species tested here, after large scale tests.
