Creative Education (CE) , 2015, DOI: 10.4236/ce.2015.612128
Abstract: The study of risk factors that affect the development of children with Down syndrome (DS) has been the main subject of several studies. In the Brazilian context, the development of instruments to identify such risks is still a challenge. The current study had the objective of examining the characteristics of a diagnostic organizer instrument which detects risk factors for development. The study was conducted in a clinic that offers services to children with DS in a Public Hospital in Curitiba, Brazil—and 15 parents of children from 0 - 8 years with DS that use the ambulatory service were interviewed, while the children’s medical records were also consulted. With the use of the Organization Diagnostic for Early Intervention (ODAP (GAT, 2008)), current and past conditions of child development as well as risk factors were evaluated. The research provided an organization of diagnostic, identifying cumulative risks factors for child development with emphasis on biological and environmental factors, and revealed vulnerabilities. The study provided a comprehensive understanding about the influence of the risk factors to development, as well as informing the development of strategies for intervention to enhance protective factors and promote positive child development and higher quality in family and social relationships.

Abstract: by assuming the parental role, parents face the challenge of educating. one of the adversities which can affect the family system is the birth of a child with intellectual disabilities. when it happens, it is natural for the family to question the education plan. therefore, the objective of this research was to identify the educational practices used by parents of 3 to 6 year old children with typical and atypical development (intellectual disabilities and down's syndrome) and the parental stress level. the method includes descriptive and inferential analysis. 61 parents participated in this research, whose results confirmed the hypothesis that different parental practices are chosen by different groups of parents, and that parents of children with intellectual disabilities are more stressed than the other parents. the hypothesis that the age of the children influences the parental practices was contradicted. this research concluded that parents of children with intellectual disabilities need a support network to guide their educational practices. new researches and programs to deal with these families should be done in order to minimize the stress level and support efficient educational practices.

Silva, Maria de Fátima Minetto Caldeira;Kleinhans, Andréia Cristina dos Santos;
Revista Brasileira de Educa??o Especial , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S1413-65382006000100009
Abstract: much has been said about down syndrome. but one aspect stands out: their cognitive difficulties. which areas are most affected? how can they be enhanced? such questions have instigated many researchers. as inclusion in the schools is being achieved, such issues have augmented the search for answers, since, during the last decades have shown that people with down syndrome do have cognitive potential to develop. we would like to point out at this time that we don't intend to deny the evidence of real lesions due to genetic alterations, but rather to highlight the possibility of minimizing their negative effect. the aim of this article is to address and discuss some of the recent discoveries related to cognitive processes in down syndrome, so as to show how important brain plasticity can be in development and acquisition of knowledge. to this end, we aim to discuss cognitive processes present in down syndrome, relating them to general concepts of brain plasticity and look at ways such knowledge can favor learning. we acknowledge that it isn't possible to exhaust the subject, but we do intend to start thinking about this issue. to do so, we begin with a review of the literature, looking at research, from the oldest to the most recent publications, in an attempt to better understand how to make use of these findings.

Educa??o & Sociedade , 1999, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-73301999000400008
Abstract: this article demonstrates the advance of theoretical analyses about the influence of the "enterprises's pattern of administration" in the management of brazilian educational system. it points out the necessity to evaluate the practical experiences of democratic administration of the basic education level developed by the municipal administration with a popular and democratic character in order to expand and to materialize these experiences based on the advanced conceptions of education elaborated by progressive educational sectors.the hegemonic groups in the city, state and federal levels of the government used to assimilate these progressive conceptions to redefine them towards their insterests. some examples are presented and also some suggestions of political and pedagogical procedures to expand opposed tendency among teachers in the schools, against the government politics, realized according the determinations of the world bank . this progressive sectors of education needs to rescue the principles, conceptions and the methodologies that were ignored by the government in the context of the "oficial ldb" to develop the national plan of education.

Educa??o & Sociedade , 1999,
