Costa, Maria de Fátima;
Anais do Museu Paulista: História e Cultura Material , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-47142009000200010
Abstract: in this paper, we examine the works produced by miguel ciera against the backdrop of the third delimitation expedition, which was sent by portugal to explore the interior of south america between 1752 and 1756. as the astronomer and cosmographer of the demarcation team, this paduan engineer sailed up paraguay river all the way to the mouth of jauru river and there, with his companions, he set the border line, thus substantiating at site the treaty of boundaries. it was during this expedition that ciera gathered information to design his mappa geographicum quo flumen argentum, paranà et paraguay [...], a beautiful atlas that he later bestowed upon king joseph i in 1758. in addition to accurate geographic charts, the atlas included depictions of fauna, popular types and landscapes made in pencil and watercolor, forming the first set of images available of that region, which was named pantanal as from the 18th century. here, we analyze this specific piece and seek to demonstrate that it was not merely a beautiful atlas; in fact, it was a refined visual document with which miguel ciera offered the portuguese monarch valuable information about the hinterland where the border line was laid.

Representa??es de poder em discursos político-educacionais e educacionais: em quest?o o ensino de inglês para crian?as na internet
Amarante, Maria de Fátima;
Trabalhos em Linguística Aplicada , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-18132009000200004
Abstract: this paper presents part of a research which aims at maping power representations in several discourses which deal with distance education. our object of study in this article are discourses which are somehow related to the issue of teaching/ learning english as a foreign language to/by children in the internet, looking for the inscription, the marks, the significants that configure new signifying practices that are socially and discursively constituted and, thus, allow the constructions of meanings which alter the (as)symmetry of power relations. we adopt, therefore, the concept of discourse proposed by foucault (1969/1987, p.86), for whom discourse is productive: it does not just name things, but also produces things, new meanings which have truth effects. we also relate discourse and representation, since both must be analyzed as power tactics and strategies, considering that it is power that turns things true. thus, the research is qualitative, including the analysis of production conditions and linguistic materiality of discourses related to the teaching/learning of english for/ by children in the internet.

The current article is part of the research “Coherence and Cohesion in Texts of Students from 1st to 4th year” and it presents the results of texts produced by students of 1st year in different stages of the first grade. The aim is to conduct a qualitative and quantitative analysis of the mechanisms of coherence and cohesion of texts written on the same topic, from the model of cohesive harmony, proposed by Hassan (1984), in which the analysis of lexical cohesion is held from the formation of chains of identity and similarity. The results show that students during reading readiness produce texts more coherent and cohesive as they dominate the writing strategies. Besides, the addition of the conjunctive chain analysis to the model of cohesive harmony, allows clarifying the accurate levels of coherence and cohesion of the texts.

CONSTRU O DE CONCEITOS EM SALA DE AULA: SABER TRANSMITIDO VERSUS SABER CONSTRUíDO
Maria de Fátima Alves
DLCV : Língua, Linguística & Literatura , 2009,
Abstract: Based on the principle that concepts are not stable entities but joint construction processes of signification and that knowledge must be collectively constructed rather than directly transmitted to the learners, the present study aims to develop a critical approach in the construction process of concepts in classroom focusing on the difference between given knowledge and collectively constructed knowledge. In order to achieve such goal, extracts of Science and Portuguese lessons conducted at fundamental schools from Jo o Pessoa, PB were analyzed considering the methodology applied to the teaching of concepts. Theoretically, the work was based on studies carried out by Vygotsky (2002), Rego (2001),Baquero (2001), Oliveira e Oliveira (1999), among others. The results pointed out the need to enhance teaching practices of concepts that could help students develop conceptualization through interactive teaching-learning strategies.
