Abstract: A depress o encontra-se associada às perturba es do humor de dura o variáveis, que é em geral acompanhada por sintomas físicos e mentais, interferindo na forma de sentir, pensar e agir. Este estudo tem como objetivo identificar as representa es sociais de crian as acerca da depress o através de uma abordagem transcultural. Participaram desse estudo crian as inseridas no contexto escolar brasileiro e português. Para tanto, utilizou-se os seguintes instrumentos: Children Depression Inventory (CDI) e Associa o Livre de Palavras. Os resultados apontam uma prevalência da depress o em crian as brasileiras (11%) e portuguesas (14%). De forma consensual, a depress o emerge como sin nimo de tristeza, doen a e choro. A pessoa deprimida é representada como angustiada, que chora, cabisbaixo, desanimada, sem amigo, como auto-imagem negativa (depreciativa), e que chora. Espera-se contribuir na compreens o da etiologia da depress o em contextos culturais diferenciados, bem como, na elabora o de estratégias preventivas para uma melhor qualidade de vida dessa popula o.

Abstract: the population movements of people who are more or less organized are a phenomenon as old as humanity. but the migration of millions of people who immigrate today is becoming a process with so intense stress levels that exceeds their capacity of adaptation. this study aims to assess the mental health and analyze the social representation of the constructs immigration, immigrant, mental health and the future of brazilian immigrants who live in the city of geneva, switzerland. this is an exploratory multimethod approach held with a sample of 266 participants who answered the bio-social demographic questionnaire, the instrument for self-reporting questionnaire scrining and the semi-directed interview. the questionnaire data were analyzed using the statistical package for social sciences (spss.for windows.16), using descriptive and inferential statistics and the content of the interviews through the analysis of bardin (1997/2002). the results showed that the variable time of immigration has favored the emergence of deficits in the mental health of participants. this study concluded that in this context of international immigration the social representations and the mental health of the immigrants are influenced by the duration or by the time of immigration.
Migra??o e qualidade de vida: um estudo psicossocial com brasileiros migrantes

Abstract: the objective of this study was to analyze the social representations of 51 brazilian immigrants (73% female and 27% male) living in the city of geneva, switzerland, about the quality of life and migration. the free word association test was employed. the data collected were processed by the software tri-deux-mots, and were analyzed using factorial correspondence analysis. the results showed that the variables of gender and period of migration contributed with higher values for the meaning of the factors. the similarities and differences in the representational content were observed in the different groups, which evidenced a communication and orientation of behavior according to the socio-demographic variables established, benefiting their identity and testifying to their justifying function.
Uma perspectiva psicossocial da sintomatologia depressiva na adolescência

Abstract: this study aimed at understanding the social representations (sr) of depression among adolescents on high school level. two hundred and twenty-two (222) adolescents of both sexes (53% male and 47% female), aged between 14 and 19 years and attending the first, second and third grades of high school participated in the study. the instruments used were: the beck depression inventory (bdi) for selecting the sample, using 17 as a cut point. the adolescents who achieved this score were invited to participate in the second part of this study consisting of semi-structured interviews and application of free association tests with the stimulus words: depression, depressed person and me. it was verified that the adolescents anchored their sr of depression as synonym for pain, grief, misfortune, hatred, death, discouragement, anxiety, solitude and tears. the sr elaborated by the social actors of this study revealed a similarity with the conception/description, as described in psychiatry. the purpose of this study besides helping to understand the suffering provoked by depressive symptoms is to contribute to a better quality of life of these adolescents.

Abstract: this study's proposal was to verify the social representations of the depression's symptoms in adolescents in high school context from public and private schools, in jo?o pessoa city, pb. sixty adolescents with depression's symptoms from both genders (54% female and 46% male), whose ages were around 16, have participated in this study. it was utilized the children depression inventory as the screening instrument, as well as semi-structured interviews, which were applied individually. the interviews were analyzed according to the thematic content technique. the results pointed out the following empirical categories: conception/description, causes and treatment. these categories were further divided in subcategories that had mainly emphasized the affective, cognitive, psycho-socials and behavioral aspects. it was realized the groups not only construct their representations based on the erudite knowledge or the informal communications, but also based on the set of practical problems that they have faced in the socio-cultural scope, which are directly interrelated to the group identity and acceptance.

Abstract: acquired immune deficiency syndrome has treatment and effective possibilities of control, hence motivating studies and professional interventions towards the improvement of the quality of life. to evaluate the perception of acquired immune deficiency syndrome and quality of life by human immunodeficiency virus serumápositive individuals. ninety-one subjects of both genders participated of this study. it was utilized the test of free association of words and the data were processed by the tri-deux-mots software and interpreted through the factorial analysis of correspondence. the acquired immune deficiency syndrome was represented as a disease that can cause numerous consequences such as psychosocial, professional, family?and organicrelated. the quality of life was represented by elements that have both subjective and objective characteristics, enclosing this way, different matters present in the concept of life quality advocated by the world health organization, such as: the psychological aspect, social relations, environment, and spiritual aspects. even though the antiretroviral drugs propitiate a general health improvement, they are not enough. thus there is the necessity of an approach toward the psychological disturbs in order to obtain life quality in a more plentiful way.

Abstract: A Aids é, freqüentemente, associada a transtornos psiquiátricos, sendo a depress o o mais comum deles. Esta pesquisa teve como objetivos: 1) apreender as representa es sociais da Aids e da depress o por soropositivos para o HIV; 2) avaliar a prevalência da sintomatologia da depress o. Participaram deste estudo 91 sujeitos soropositivos, de ambos os sexos, com média de idade de 38 anos. Foram utilizados, como instrumentos, o Teste de Associa o Livre de Palavras e o inventário de Beck para medir depress o. Os dados obtidos possibilitaram representa es da depress o e da Aids como uma doen a que atinge o ser humano em sua globalidade, repercutindo em vários aspectos de sua vida, tais como na qualidade de vida, na produtividade e na capacita o social. A prevalência da sintomatologia depressiva encontrada neste estudo (64%) remete à necessidade do preparo dos profissionais para diagnosticarem e tratarem esse fen meno dentro do contexto da Aids. AIDS is frequently associated with psychiatric disturbs, being depression the most common of those. This research has as objectives: 1) seize the social representations of AIDS and depression by HIV serum-positive persons; 2) evaluate the prevalence of depression's symptoms. Ninety-one HIV serum-positive persons participated in this research. They were of both genders, with mean age of 38 years. The Test of Free Association of Words and Beck's inventory to measure were used as instruments. The data obtained made it possible to represent depression and AIDS as a disease that reach the human being in their totality, with repercussions in several aspects of their lives, such as quality of life, productivity, and social capacitation. The prevalence of depression symptoms found in this study (64%) show the necessity of capacitating professionals for the diagnosis and treatment of this phenomenon within the context of AIDS.

Abstract: this study aimed to understand the main conditions and setting of the brazilian immigrants formations in the portuguese context. specifically, the aim was to clarify which factors contribute to determine the searching for health services in the host country. the sample was consisted by 75 brazilians who live in portugal, from which 35 were men and 40 were women. the data were collected by a socio-demographic questionnaire and analyzed by descriptive and inferential statistics. the results showed an increasing of a brazilian immigrants' profile in portugal, and the insertion of such into a group of social risk, reflected in their psychological and social conditions, and more specifically in the health field.

Abstract: the following study deals with depression and suicide, two serious public health problems, under a psychosocial approach. its aim is the assimilation of the social representations concerning these two phenomena as well as the investigation of their occurrence in an academic setting. two-hundred and twenty-three students of both sexes, registered in all periods of the psychology course of a public university participated in the research. the tools used were beck’s depression inventory (bdi), beck’s suicidal ideation scale (bsi) and the free technique of word association, with the use of three inductive stimulations: depression, suicide, myself. depression was anchored on psycho-affective elements, whereas suicide was represented by the element death, that meant an escape. the self-image of the students, in general, emerges in a positive way, contrasting however with a significant index of depression and suicidal ideation in this population.

Abstract: nowadays the expression “life quality” is getting an increasing interest of professionals and researchers from the most varied human knowledge fields, especially on health services together with professionals and users. the aim of this article is to present the results of a research about the social representations of health professionals about life quality and its practices in the public service. it is an exploratory study developed in jo?o pessoa/pb, based on the social representations’ theory and instrumented by a semi-structured interview. the data collected were processed and analysed by the technique of content analysis (bardin, 2002) and dimensioned by categories that revealed the objective and subjective dimensions of these representations. regarding the public service, it was clear that a direct association with the difficulties and obstacles that public service presents are of little value to society and to its manager institutions.
