Ciência Rural , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-84782008005000019
Abstract: a case of one month of evolution, of an 8-year-old equine of undefined breed, presenting alopecic areas, crusts on the upper eyelid, forelimbs, hindlimbs, preputial region and mainly, on the neck and scapula is reported. pruritus was discrete. the histological analysis revealed pyogranulomatous dermatitis round blood vessels and adnexa, associated with epidermal hyperplasia, as well as orthokeratosis, parakeratosis and crusts. the follicular epithelium exhibited foci of spongiosis and exocytosis of neutrophils, with predominant chronic inflammation changes. bacterial culture identified staphylococcus intermedius, based on morphology, staining and biochemical tests positive for catalase, coagulase, glucose and aerobic acid production from mannitol. the equine was treated with dimethylsulfoxide, gentamicine and dexamethasone topically on a daily basis. although some lesions presented rapid regression (7 days), it took 13 months for the complete repair of those lesions of the neck and scapula.

Pesquisa Agropecuária Brasileira , 2012, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-204X2012000400003
Abstract: the objective of this work was to determine the effect of piperine as a phytogenic additive in chicken broiler diet. seven?day?old male chicks were randomly allocated in four experimental treatments (n = 24), with four replicates (n = 6). the piperine was added to diets at concentrations of 0, 60, 120, and 180 mg kg?1 for 35 consecutive days. the following were evaluated: biochemical, hematological and histopathological parameters; performance and carcass yield. histomorphometric analyses were also carried out. the addition of 120 and 180 mg kg?1 of piperine did not alter broiler body weight and feed conversion, whereas 60 mg kg?1 of piperine interfered positively in both parameters from 36 to 42 days of age and significantly increased the absorption surface of the duodenum and the ileum. no macroscopic alteration in organ size and color was observed in the broilers fed diets with the evaluated concentrations of piperine. the supplementation of 120 and 180 mg kg?1 of piperine is toxic to liver tissue and reduces the absorption surface of the jejune. the diet supplemented with 60 mg kg?1 of piperine is safe.

Abstract.- The vegetation of caatinga presents great potential of fodder plant production constituting in the majority of the times the main source of animal feeding in the half-barren region in the Brazilian Northeast. The forage species of this vegetation present periodic oscillations of growth and budding, having, however, much doubt on the factors that affect this regularity. The growth of the plants can be evaluated from the estimate of the foliar area, being commonly used in agronomy studies. Of the factors of the environment that more affect the growth of the plants is distinguished the hidric deficit, whose more common reply of the plants it is the reduction of the production of the leaf area, closing of the stomat, acceleration of the senescence and fall of leaf. Thus this revision had as objective to argue on aspects related to the forage potential of caatinga, emphasizing the importance of the studies of the phenology, the methods of evaluation of the leaf area and the effect of the hidric deficit on the growth of the plants.

Psicologia: Ciência e Profiss?o , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S1414-98932008000400008
Abstract: resilience is an important phenomenon in human development, however its concept is still discussed and defined because it is a relatively recent research field in the human sciences. the purpose of this study was to do a survey on the research related to resilience from 2000 to 2006. the adopted method consisted in the documental analysis of the surveys on data-base research using key words. the analysis of the data consisted in the separation of categories of analysis based on the findings in research about resilience. the data showed that there is an emphasis on basic research with the prevalence of adult population. they also showed that the interview was the main instrument of the survey. the results indicated that the concept of resilience is still in construction, that resilience has a direct relation with the risk and the protection factors and furthermore the results also showed that the development of prevention and intervention programs is necessary.

Abstract: the effect of recipients, substrate mixtures, diameters of tillers and of different leaf lengths kept on the tiller was evaluated for transplant production of lemon grass (cymbopogon citratus (d.c.) stapf.). in the first assay, we tested two recipients and nine mixtures of substrates. the tublet recipient of 110 cm3 was better than the expanded polystyrene foam bed with 72 cells of 121.2 cm3 and all the tested substrates (coconut dust, carbonized rice hulls and bovine manure at rates of 1:1:2, and coconut dust, carbonized rice hulls, soil and bovine manure at rates of 1:1:1:3) resulted in good quality of lemon grass transplants. in the second assay, we tested two tiller diameters (>1.5 and <1.5 cm) and the maintenance of four leaf lengths on tiller (0, 3, 6 and 9 cm). it was concluded that if tillers were thicker than 1.5 cm diameter, then 5.5 cm of leaf length should be kept and if the tiller diameter were inferior to 1.5 cm, then the total leaf area should be cut off in order to promote tilling.

Arquivos Brasileiros de Endocrinologia & Metabologia , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S0004-27302007000900013
Abstract: aim and methods: our main aim was to determine the association between clinical, demographical parameters and different insulin resistance and secretion indices in apparently healthy subjects, without previous knowledge of their own level of glucose tolerance. for that purpose, we evaluated 105 individuals from february to august 2003 by means of ogtt, aged 33.4 ± 1.4 years old, 57.1% female. we allocated them in four groups: group 0 (normal): individuals with bmi < 25 kg/m2 and normal glucose metabolism, group 1 (obese): bmi > 25 kg/m2 and normal glucose metabolism, group 2 (ifg): impaired fasting glucose and group 3 (igt): impaired glucose tolerance. results: we have found statistical difference on all variables during ogtt between all groups: fasting glucose (p < 0.05), 2-hour glucose (p < 0.05), glucose peak value (p < 0.05), glucose delta (p = 0.02), glucose incremental percentage (p = 0.047), area under curve (p < 0.05), and glucose peak time (p = 0.022). we have not found difference on any variable in insulin curves or on glucose incremental velocity. regarding insulin secretion indices there were no statistical significance in insulinogenic or delta indices, but they became significant after being corrected by insulin resistance (p = 0.008). when we evaluated insulin resistance alone, by using homa and quicki indices and the fasting glucose to insulin index, we have found statistical significance (p = 0.005; p = 0.005; p = 0.053). conclusion: although studying a small sample, we could suggest that individuals with impaired fasting glucose and impaired glucose tolerance are in different stages of diabetes natural history disease. we found out that the best indices of insulin resistance are both homa and quicki. we also suggest that pancreatic secretion indices should be corrected by the insulin resistance, which could best reflect type 2 diabetes natural history.
