Soares, Maria Raquel;Pereira, Carlos Alberto de Castro;
Jornal Brasileiro de Pneumologia , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S1806-37132011000500003
Abstract: objective: to develop regression equations for six-minute walk distance (6mwd) in healthy adults (20-80 years of age) in brazil. methods: we included 132 volunteers (66 males) without respiratory disease, cardiac disease, or comorbidities that affect ambulation. the volunteers completed three six-minute walk tests. prior to and at the end of each test, we obtained spo2 and maximal hr, as well as the borg scale scores for sensation of dyspnea and lower limb fatigue. the data included in the final analysis were derived from the test with the greatest 6mwd. results: the mean 6mwd values were 566 ± 87 m and 538 ± 95 m in males and females, respectively (p = 0.08). the 6mwd was greater in taller individuals and decreased in parallel with increases in age or body index mass (bmi). the best adjusted model was the quadratic model. we derived the following equation (valid for both genders): 6mwd = 511 + stature2 (cm) × 0.0066 - age2 × 0.030 - bmi2 × 0.068. this equation explained 55% of the variance in 6mwd. conclusions: reference values explaining a high proportion of the variance were derived by a quadratic regression model in healthy adults (of a wide range of ages) in brazil.

American Journal of Plant Sciences (AJPS) , 2015, DOI: 10.4236/ajps.2015.612194
Abstract: Mixtures of cereals and legumes result in products with higher content of high biological value proteins. The thermoplastic extrusion promotes the transformation of chemical, physical and nutritional characteristics of the food such as starch gelatinization and promotes the inactivation of anti-nutritional compounds and enzymes. This study aimed to develop products extruded using broken rice and lupine and to evaluate the physical and chemical characteristics of those products. The expansion index (EI), water solubility (WSI), water absorption (WAI), texture and color were determined for the extruded rice, and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) of the extruded rice was also performed. As the rice concentration in the mixture increased, the EI, WSI and WAI values as well as the a* color parameter were increased too, and the brightness was reduced. An increase in the levels of essential amino acids with the addition of lupine grain to the extrudates was observed. SEM analysis identified intact loose starch granules or pellets in the raw materials, and the extruded samples showed a compact and amorphous shape without apparent starch granules. Due to the structural changes and reduced expansion rate of the extruded mixture prepared with lupine and rice grits, use of the extruded mixtures as snacks would not be suitable. However, these mixtures could be used in pre-gelatinized flour to formulate various products to increase the protein level.

Psicologia: Reflex?o e Crítica , 2005, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-79722005000100003
Abstract: this study aimed at knowing the extent to which the human values and ambivalent sexism correlated with each other and with both sexism dimensions: hostile and benevolent. a sample of 301 individuals deriving from different social classes of jo?o pessoa took part in the present study. their ages ranged from 18 to 72 years old (m=29.5; sd=11.58). the sample was composed mostly of women (54.2%), catholic (56.8%), single (53.2%) and university graduates (53.5%). they answered the ambivalent sexism inventory, the basic values questionnaire and a set of demographic questions. the results can be abridged as follows: 1) both sexism dimensions (hostile and benevolent) correlated with each other; 2) men showed higher scores in hostile sexism than women, although no difference between them was found on benevolent sexism scores; 3) participants deriving from lower social classes, with a specific religion (catholic and protestant) and less time of study presented higher sexism scores; and 4) those who scored high on normative values (obedience and religiosity) also presented a high score on ambivalent sexism, while the participants with high scores on suprapersonal values (beauty and knowledge) scored lower on this kind of prejudice. these results corroborate the idea that conservative thoughts, beliefs and behavior tend to promote ambivalent sexism. otherwise, self-directed people who are oriented to universalism and are not attached to specific principles tend to be less sexists.

Abstract: Descartes has established concepts upon which he would explain his general thesis on the motions of bodies. In total disagreement, Newton made a conspicuous attack on Cartesian theory concluding that the motions proposed by the French philosopher should not be considered as true motions. The dialogue developed throughout the discussion, based on Newtonian theory concerning the nature of the physical world, demonstrates in a subtle and exquisite way the accurate observations made by Newton about the contradictions that led to the development of the concepts as proposed by Descartes. Imbued with a physical and philosophical spirit, this article aims to elucidate the Cartesian’s "fictions" as well to show the way through Newton sought to refute them: by opposing such theory of motion with his.
