Mathematics , 2014,
Abstract: We determine necessary conditions for a non-horizontal submanifold of a sub-Riemannian stratified Lie group to be of minimal measure. We calculate the first variation of the measure for a non-horizontal submanifold and find that the minimality condition implies the tensor equation $H+\sigma=0$, where $H$ is analogous to the mean curvature and $\sigma$ is the mean torsion. We also discuss new examples of minimal non-horizontal submanifolds in the Heisenberg group, in particular surfaces in $\mathbb H^2$.
Epidemiological and microbiological aspects of acute bacterial diarrhea in children from Salvador, Bahia, Brazil
Diniz-Santos, Daniel R.;Santana, José S.;Barretto, Junaura R.;Andrade, Maria Goreth M.;Silva, Luciana R.;
Brazilian Journal of Infectious Diseases , 2005, DOI: 10.1590/S1413-86702005000100013
Abstract: in the few cases of acute childhood diarrhea that require antimicrobial therapy, the correct choice of the drug depends on detailed previous knowledge of local strains. in order to establish such parameters in our city, we reviewed the results of all 260 positive stool cultures of children between 0 and 15 years of age during two years at a pediatric tertiary care facility in salvador, brazil. bacterial strains had been presumptively identified by culturing in selective media and by biochemical testing, and their antimicrobial susceptibility patterns were automatically detected by the microscan walkaway system. data about patients' sex and age, monthly distribution of the cases, pathogens isolated and their antimicrobial resistance patterns were recorded. males corresponded to 55.4% of our sample, and most of our patients (42.7%) were between one and four years of age. shigella was the commonest pathogen, being found in 141 (54.3%) cultures, while salmonella was found in 100 (38.4%) cultures and enteropathogenic e. coli in 19 (7.3%). salmonella was the main causal agent of diarrhea in children younger than five years old, whereas shigella was the most frequent pathogen isolated from the stools of children between five and 15 years old. the peaks of incidence correspond to the periods of school vacations. shigella specimens presented a very high resistance rate to trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (90.1%) and to ampicillin (22.0%), while salmonella presented very low resistance rates to all drugs tested. these data are useful for practitioners and they reinforce the need for continuous microbiological surveillance.

CINTRA, Israel H.A.;OGAWA, Norma B.P.;SOUZA, Maria R.;DINIZ, Fábio M.;OGAWA, Masayoshi;
Ciência e Tecnologia de Alimentos , 1999, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-20611999000300003
Abstract: currently, sulfites are employed on board to inhibit melanosis (blackspot) on crustaceans. however, when used in excess this chemical compound not only can cause adverse reactions in so2-sensitive individuals, but also favors the decomposition of trimethylamine oxide (tmao) into dimethylamine (dma) and formaldehyde (fa), thus compromising the quality of the product, which can be observed mainly through the texture change of the meat after cooking. this study was conducted to verify the increase of the contents of dma and fa by the excessive use of sodium metabisulfite in white shrimp (penaeus schmitti). for laboratory trials, shrimp were beheaded, washed and immersed in a 2% sodium metabisulfite solution for 10 minutes. specimens were stored either on ice and maintained for 48 hours in refrigeration, or stored in a freezer for 48 hours. samples were collected at intervals of 0, 24 and 48 hours, and analyzed for residual so2, tmao, tma, dma and fa. the immersion of shrimp in a 2% sodium metabisulfite for 10 minutes favored the decomposition of tmao which greatly increased the contents of dma and fa. the fa and dma measured in fresh shrimp was low. moreover, the storage of shrimp tails on ice resulted in a significant reduction of the tma, dma, fa and residual so2 contents compared to the specimens under frozen storage.

Ceccon, Maria Esther J. R.;Vaz, Flávio A.C.;Diniz, Edna M. A.;Okay, Thelma S.;
Revista da Associa??o Médica Brasileira , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-42302006000200016
Abstract: background: verify the accuracy of interleukin 6 (il-6) and c-reactive protein (crp) for diagnosis of late onset sepsis in newborn (nb) infants. methods: a prospective cohort study with 43 nb infants hospitalized at the nicu with suspicion of late onset sepsis was carried out. levels of il-6 and of crp were dosed with suspicion diagnoses; day (0) and sequentially on day 1, 3, and 7 of the evolution and the best cut-off values were calculated for the diagnoses. indices of sensibility (s), specificity (sp), positive predictive value and negative predictive value (ppv, npv) were calculated for each test as well as for the combination between them. results: levels of il-6 and crp were above the established cut-off values in the nb infants with sepsis and with presumed sepsis. there was a significant difference between both groups, where the only difference was the positive blood culture for the first group. diagnosis could be rejected in 6 nb infants. the il-6 showed better indices on the day of suspicion diagnosis, day 0 (s: 88.9%, sp: 80.0%, ppv: 76.2%, npv: 90.9%), followed by the c-reactive protein (s: 94.0%, sp: 78.3%, ppv: 77.3%, npv: 94.7%) 24 hours later. the combination of il-6 / crp demonstrated to be adequate for early diagnosis of sepsis on day 0 and 24 hours later with s and npv of 100%. conclusion: for diagnosis of sepsis the combination interleukin 6 / crp presented accuracy. during the following days their development reflected the clinical evolution of the nb infants.

Abstract: Obesity is a chronic disease characterized by excess body fat, which can lead to other health problems, including insulin resistance, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, polycystic ovary syndrome, hypertension, dyslipidemia, sleep apnea, asthma, heart attack, stroke, atherosclerosis and metabolic syndrome. Currently, obesity and dental caries are major public health concerns and dietary habits are a very important common component of their etiological factors, showing some correlation with the sociodemographic characteristics of individuals presenting these diseases. In relation to caries experience, the literature suggests a correlation between obesity and dental caries in children and adolescents, in primary and/or permanent dentition, though divergent results exist regarding assessment based on the method recommended by the WHO (1997), i.e., restricted to carious lesions with cavitation. Some studies indicate greater prevalence of proximal carious lesions in obese adolescents compared with those with normal weight. Salivary changes, such as the concentrations of phosphate, sialic acid, proteins and immunoglobulins and in peroxidase activity could explain the increased probability of obese children presenting greater risk of dental caries. Thus, it is important to consider the contribution of salivary parameters in caries experience of overweight children and adolescents and the implementation of preventive measures in this population.

Leal, Maria Christina Diniz;
DELTA: Documenta??o de Estudos em Lingüística Teórica e Aplicada , 2005, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-44502005000300006
Abstract: the aim of this paper is to analyse journalistic discourse concerning privatisation and protest. i will examine editorials and news reports on the sale of three major brazilian state-owned enterprises: usiminas, vale do rio doce and telebrás. texts published the day after the privatisation auctions have been selected from the following brazilian dailies: folha de s?o paulo, jornal do brasil, correio braziliense and jornal de brasília. this research is based, among others, on fairclough's work on discourse and on the media, thompson's work on ideology, fowler's work on discourse in the media. the methodology employed for examining the corpus is critical discourse analysis (fairclough, chouliaraki). in conclusion, it will be shown how discourse in the press - by legitimising the sales and differentiating the protesters - endeavours to forge a feeling of common sense favouring privatisation and repudiating popular protest in the streets.
