Abstract: the 'pau-brasil' tree (caesalpinia echinata lam.) have a high cultural value in brazil and its seed propagation is very difficult because of its rapid losses of germination potential. cuttings propagation has been considered as alternative method to propagate forest species that seed propagation is poor. the objectives of this study were to determine the effects of indole-3-butyric acid (iba) and naphthalene acetic (naa) acid on the adventitious root formation on stem cuttings of "pau-brasil". cuttings with around 12cm length, with two pars of leaves, received a basal treatment of 0; 6,25; 12,50; 25 and 50mm iba and naa as solution form or 0, 1,250, 2,500, 5,000, 10,000mg kg-1 as powder form. all cuttings were planted in cell trays containing sand and placed under greenhouse mist (90-95% relative humidity). after 120 days, cuttings were assessed for survival, foliar retention, callus formation and roots formation. there were high survival rate (up to 70%) of the cuttings. callus formation was not correlated to auxin concentration. the utilization of liquid 25mm of iba and naa promoted the highest percentage of root formation, around 16%. the high survival rate associate with low percentage of root formation suggests that the cuttings may need longer time in greenhouse in order to stimulate root formation.

Revista Brasileira de Cirurgia Plástica , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S1983-51752011000100032
Abstract: introduction: the standard care for these lower extremity injuries with exposed bone is vascularized tissue transfer; however, this option is often not available or is technically difficult. the advent of dermal regeneration template, a bioengineered skin substitute, provides a remarkable alternative to the traditional reconstructive choices. cases report: the authors report two patients from a total of 246 patients who had burns involving their lower extremities, admitted to s. josé hospital burn unit, between january 2007 and december 2008. both patients had bilateral deep burn injuries with exposed bone affecting the anterior surface of lower leg and were treated with tangential excision of the burn eschar and placement of the dermal regeneration template. four weeks later, after engraftment of the matrix, the thin outer layer of silicone was removed and the epidermal coverage was restored with a split thin skin graft. stable wound cover was achieved and no further surgical procedures were required to maintain wound closure. conclusion: the use of a dermal replacement matrix expands reconstructive options for difficult burn (and non burn) wounds, preventing prolonged, staged procedures, allowing successful coverage of vital structures without the use of a flap and, as in these particular cases, the salvage of the extremity.

Jornal Brasileiro de Patologia e Medicina Laboratorial , 2004, DOI: 10.1590/S1676-24442004000500012
Abstract: leiomyosarcomas are malign neoplasms arising in the smooth muscle. the occurrence in the oral region, since its scarcity in this particular anatomical site, requests the utilization of special techniques for the diagnostic establishment. here the authors relate two cases of this uncommon pathology. after the incisional biopsy and histological analysis the specimens were submitted to the histochemical technique of masson's tricrome to confirm the muscular origin of the tumors. both cases confirmed the origin, but in one the staining pattern was not so clear, generating some doubts about the diagnosis. for this reason, the immunohistochemical analysis was performed utilizing antibodies anti vimentin, sma, s100, cd34, cd68, xiiia and ae1/ae3. both cases showed positivity to vimentin and sma, confirming the smooth muscle origin and the diagnosis.

Jornal da Sociedade Brasileira de Fonoaudiologia , 2012, DOI: 10.1590/S2179-64912012000200008
Abstract: purpose: to study the frequency of cervical spine dysfunction (ccd) signs and symptoms in subjects with and without temporomandibular disorder (tmd) and to assess the craniocervical posture influence on tmd and ccd coexistence. methods: participants were 71 women (19 to 35 years), assessed about tmd presence; 34 constituted the tmd group (g1) and 37 comprised the group without tmd (g2). the ccd was evaluated through the craniocervical dysfunction index and the cervical mobility index. subjects were also questioned about cervical pain. craniocervical posture was assessed by cephalometric analysis. results: there was no difference in the craniocervical posture between groups. g2 presented more mild ccd frequency and less moderate and severe ccd frequency (p=0.01). g1 presented higher percentage of pain during movements (p=0.03) and pain during cervical muscles palpation (p=0.01) compared to g2. most of the tmd patients (88.24%) related cervical pain with significant difference when compared to g2 (p=0.00). conclusion: craniocervical posture assessment showed no difference between groups, suggesting that postural alterations could be more related to the ccd. presence of tmd resulted in higher frequency of cervical pain symptom. thus the coexistence of ccd and tmd signs and symptoms appear to be more related to the common innervations of the trigeminocervical complex and hyperalgesia of the tmd patients than to craniocervical posture deviations.

Abstract: several rice producing areas where soil residuals of imidazolinone herbicides are present have shown the development of algae blooms, which, depending on density, may affect rice plant development. this study aimed to evaluate the effects of different fertilizer management systems on the composition and structure of algae communities and also on rice yield in irrigated areas with imidazolinone soil residuals. the experiment was carried out in the crop year of 2008/09, at the federal university of santa maria, where a field had been treated with imazethapyr + imazapic (120+40g i.a. ha-1) in the crop year 2 of 2007/08. the treatments included two different fertilizer management systems and two rice cultivars. the 'irga 417' showed greater phytotoxicity, but in the same way as the fertilizer managements, it did not affect rice productivity or the development of algae. thus, the two fertilizer management systems tested and also the phytotoxicity of rice plants did not cause changes on the development of planktonic and periphytic algae, neither did it affect the yield of rice cultivars 'irga 422 cl' and 'irga 417'.
