Pericarp development in the macaw palm Acrocomia aculeata (Arecaceae)
Reis, Sarah Barbosa;Mercadante-Sim?es, Maria Olívia;Ribeiro, Leonardo Monteiro;
Rodriguésia , 2012, DOI: 10.1590/S2175-78602012000300005
Abstract: the anatomy of the pericarp of the macaw palm (acrocomia aculeata) was followed during development. ovaries of flowers collected at anthesis of the bracts as well as pericarps were evaluated at different development phases using traditional plant anatomy techniques. the ovary wall has two meristematic regions, one adjacent to the external epidermis and the other surrounding the seminal cavity. the external meristematic region gives rise to the woody exocarp, and the internal meristematic region is responsible for thickening of the oily/fibrous mesocarp as well as the hard endocarp. sclerification of the exocarp and endocarp occurs approximately 70 days after anthesis and defines the final fruit volume. lignification of the exocarp cell layers is incomplete, lending porosity to the structure. numerous canals develop in the mesocarp that are formed by the fusion of raphide-containing idioblasts. lignification of the sclereids and their generally random arrangement confers impermeability and rigidity to the endocarp. in mature fruits, lipidic reserves are observed in parenchymatic cells of the mesocarp, and the germination pore in the endocarp is composed of parenchymatic cells.

Abstract: this study aimed at evaluating the effect of passiflora species used as rootstocks on the success and development of ex vitro interspecific micrografting, and at anatomically characterizing the region where it is done. stem apices of passiflora edulis f. flavicarpa were grafted onto the hypocotyl of p. alata, p. cincinnata, p. edulis, and p. setacea seedlings. the micrografting development, the occurrence of adventitious shoots in rootstocks and the percentage of micrografts with expanded leaves were evaluated. the rootstocks were subjected to anatomical and histochemical evaluation. micrograft development and adventitious shoot number were higher when p. edulis rootstocks were used, and lower for rootstocks of p. setacea and p. alata. p. edulis, p. cincinnata, p. alata, and p. setacea rootstocks developed 30.3, 10, 1.6, and 0% of micrografts with expanded leaves, respectively. the histological evaluation revealed increased thickness of the cortical region in rootstocks of p. edulis, while in p. setacea a lower number of cortical layers, increased phloem fibers, and increased alkaloids were observed, characteristics that negatively influenced the micrografting outcome.

La metáfora como factor de textualidad en Ensayo sobre la lucidez, de José Saramago.
Figueiredo,Olívia Maria;
Forma y Función , 2006,
Abstract: the metaphor as a textuality factor is a reflection on how the language system is made operational in discourse. in this case the way idiomatic expressions (compound expressions) are transformed again into metaphoric expressions (componential expressions) in the literary work ensaio sobre a lucidez is studied. the analysis focuses on the assessment of how an idiomatic expression recovers its creative power or its original drive which brought it into being. within the framework of the (expanded) theory of anaphora and reconceptualization, it is shown that such a restructuring takes place throughout the literary work in a process of cognitive widening, whereby recourse to implicatures is a necessary feature to understand explicatures. what is required is for the reader to choose the right context to understand the conveyed sense. and the conveyed sense is but the questioning about the relation between man and the world by the widening of metaphoric scenarios which can only be established through language.

Abstract: the experiment was carried out with the purpose to obtain information about changes in the constituents responsible for nutritive and texture traits of pequi pulp related with harvest time and types of freezing. fruits were collected in the tree before natural fall, in the ground after natural fall and in the ground three days after natural fall. in each harvest time, while one batch of the putamens was frozen in liquid nitrogen and afterwards stored in a freezer, another batch was frozen directly in the freezer. after six months the following analyses were performed in the pulp: contents of proteins, total carotenoid, b-carotene, licopene, vitamin a and lipids (nutritive characters); content of cellulose, hemicelluloses, total pectin, total and bound calcium, activity of polygalacturonase (pg) and pectinmethilesterase (pme) of the cell wall. the contents of pigments, lipids, proteins and activity of pg were the highest in the most advanced stages of maturation of fruits. on the other hand the content of cellulose decreased with the advanced stages of maturation whiles the content of hemicelluloses, total and bound calcium were not affected at the stages of maturation of the fruits. the types of freezing affected the contents of pigments; higher in the pulp frozen in liquid nitrogen; and the activity of pg was higher in the pulp frozen directly in the freezer. the fruits collected in the tree showed the lowest eating quality as judged by their lowest contents of pigments, protein and lipids. the results indicate that the most appropriate harvest time to higher quality of pequi fruits is after natural fall.

Abstract: This is about a descriptive exploratory study, from qualitative approach, that aimed at identifying the elderly’s expectations regards to the nursing consultation for the first time. Eight elderly were attended at a federal institution for elderly care, from May 30 to June 13 2007, through the recorded interviews technique, employing a semi-structured script. The information was analyzed by the Discourse Subject Collective technique from which emerged the following core ideas: ignorance on the skills of nurses in the conduct of the consultation one; a desire for quality service and independent of the termination of vocational training; attendance humanized, corresponding to expectations. The results showed that the elderly did not know that would be attended by nurses, not seen as a standalone professional, but they felt valued during the nursing consultation.

Abstract: passiflora alata, p. cincinnata, and p. setacea are very important species, in brazil, with high agronomic potential. however, they present propagation difficulties, related to seed dormancy and storage. thus, this study aimed to evaluate the effects of storage period and methods on the passiflora alata curtis, p. cincinnata mast, and p. setacea d.c. seedlings emergence. for each species, seeds were stored at shadow, in a refrigerator (10oc) and under laboratory conditions and stratification at 10oc. at 0, 7, 60, and 120 days after storage, for p. alata and p. cincinnata, and 0, 7, 90, and 120 days, for p. setacea, 50 seeds were sown in a commercial substrate, with 4 replications. the experiments were randomly designed in a 4x3 factorial scheme (period x method). the seedlings emergence was evaluated every three days, up to 90 days after sowing. for p. alata, the stratification provided an increase on emergence percentages (11%), 60 days after seeds storage, and decrease at 120 days, with no positive influence of the other treatments. there was no influence of the storage method for p. cincinnata, but it was noticed an increase in seedlings emergence up to 60 days after storage (18,5%) and a decrease from that period on. for p. setacea, the stratification resulted in a linear increase in seedlings emergence, according to the storage period. the conservation of p. alata and p. setacea seed is more efficient under cold stratification. p. cincinnata seeds, regardless of method, should not be stored for more than 60 days.
