Abstract: this study aimed to construct and to validate a scale of academic life assessment to obtain the student's self-perception about the academic life. the scale was administered to 1,118 academic students aged 19 to 62 years (m = 25 years, sd = 6 years), and 54 percent of the students were male. the factorial analysis indicated a scale with five factors - academic ambient, course commitment, student's ability, involvement with non obligatory activities, and condition to the study - whose eigenvalues were larger than one, explaining 43 percent of the total variance. the scale included 34 items with factor loadings larger than 0.30, with a good internal consistency indicated by cronbach coefficient (a = 0.873) to evaluate the construct - the students integration with the academic life. each sub-scale's internal consistency level reached acceptable levels, ranging from 0.631 to 0.803.

Health (Health) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/health.2013.511A2005
Abstract:

Background: Adolescence includes a period (10 to 19 years) of profound biopsychosocial changes, constituting potentially difficult challenges, which may become more pronounced in the presence of a chronic condition and its limitations. Responses are not homogeneous and can be quite variable, depending on various specific individual factors. Research comparing adolescents with or without chronic illness, or comparing across different conditions, has been contradictory, not confirming a direct relationship between the degree of suffering and the chronic condition. Objective: To characterize and assess the impact of 1) having a chronic condition (CC) and 2) how CC affects school participation; and its association with life satisfaction and perception of wellness, controlling for demographic factors: age, gender and family socioeconomic status (SES). Methods: 5050 Portuguese adolescents with an average age of 14 years participated in the Health Behaviour in School-aged Children/WHO (HBSC). Results: The majority of the adolescents with CC reported that their conditions did not affect school participation. Adolescents with CC who indicated that CC affected school participation felt more frequently unwell and presented lower life satisfaction. Being a boy, younger and having high family socio economic status (SES) were identified as predictors of higher life satisfaction; on the other hand, being a girl, older, having lower SES, living with CC and feeling that CC affects school participation are predictors for feeling more frequently unwell. Conclusions: These

Abstract: introduction: percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (peg) is the gold standard in long term tube feeding of pediatric patients. however, there is still some restriction to peg placement, in some places, due to the concept that this techni-que should only be performed in pediatric gastrointestinal units. objectives: to evaluate a group of long term gastrostomy fed children followed by an enteral nutrition team which assists adults and children. evaluation included success of peg placement, safety, evolution and outcome. methods: from peg patients we selected children ≤ 16 years. we evaluated demographic data, underlying disease, gastrostomy placement, complications, clinical outcome. using spss, survival of children with stable lesions was compared with children with progressive diseases. results: gastrostomy placement was achieved in all 40 children sent to us for that purpose with neurological or muscular diseases. there were only a few major complications and surgery was never needed. du-ring the first 6 months after peg placement, every child gained weight. children with stable lesions had a longer survival (p=0,002). conclusions: peg placement was successful and safe. enteral nutrition in children was successful resulting in increased weight. child survival was related with the underlying disease. enteral feeding teams working with adults should also take care of enteral fed children, with the support of pediatricians

Revista de Enfermagem UFPE On Line , 2009,
Abstract: Objectives: to identify the meaning of abortion for women who through that experience; to examine the perceptions reported by women after the procedure of abortion, and describe the life’s prospect of these women regarding their reproductive life. Methods: the scenario was the Obstetric Center of a large Military Hospital, under the command of the Brazilian Navy, located in Rio de Janeiro. The subjects were ten women diagnosed with incomplete abortion submitted to uterine curettage, interned at the Obstetric Center. The data collection was done by the simple observation, the semi-structured interview, and the free expression and by the research in records. After to organize the information collected and to identify the emerging themes of the subject’s speech were prepared two thematic categories: the meaning of abortion for women who thought the experience and the future reproductive thinking. Results: at the time of post-abortion the most women are very sad and despair with the idea of having children later. However, some forces withdrew to continue fighting in their faith. Conclusion: the contact with these women allowed the vision of life under a new perspective. Thus, the nurse should seek to understand and exploit this period of these women’s life, looking increasingly humanization in its assistance.

Nutrition Journal , 2012, DOI: 10.1186/1475-2891-11-64
Abstract: Background There is scarce evidence regarding the association between diet and metabolic syndrome (MetS) in Portuguese population. We aim to evaluate the association between a posteriori dietary patterns (DPs) and MetS and its features. Methods Using random digit dialing, a sample of 2167 adults was selected between 1999 and 2003, in Porto. During a face-to-face interview, a questionnaire was applied, anthropometric measures were taken, blood pressure measured and a fasting blood sample collected. Diet was assessed using a validated food frequency questionnaire, and four DPs were identified in each sex by multivariate finite mixture models. Results After adjustment for age and daily energy intake, comparing to the “healthy” DP, women with the “low fruit and vegetables” DP had a higher odds of high waist circumference (OR = 1.88 95% CI 1.17-3.01) and low HDL-cholesterol (OR = 1.78 95% IC 1.12-2.82) and women in the “red meat and alcohol” DP had higher odds of high waist circumference (OR = 1.45 95% CI 1.01-2.07) and of MetS (OR = 1.57 95% CI 1.07-2.29); men with the “fish” DP had a higher odds of high triglycerides (OR = 1.57 95% CI 1.05-2.35). After further adjustments (education, physical activity, smoking, alcohol drinking, BMI, and menopausal status) no significant associations remained. Conclusions Four distinct DPs were identified in a community sample of Portuguese adults and there was no association with the prevalence of MetS.
