Monteiro, José Juarez Ferreira;Le?a, Enide Eskinazi;Koening, Maria Luise;Macedo, Silvio José de;
Acta Botanica Brasilica , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-33062010000400027
Abstract: this study reports the first occurrence of trichodesmiumthiebautii gomont ex gomont on the coast of northeastern brazil. samples were gathered during the rainy season (july 2005) and the dry season (november 2006) at six stations distributed along two perpendicular profiles of the coast of pernambuco (8o18's - 34o56'w and 8o32's - 35o00'w). t. thiebautii was found during both periods of the year and at the six collection stations, forming colonies in the form of clusters or more rarely, bundles, with straight cylindrical trichomes, quadratic or slightly longer cells, with widths between 5-10 μm and heights of 3-15 μm. the hydrological variables presented small variations, contributing to wide distribution of the species.
Urban secondary sewage: an alternative medium for the culture of Tetraselmis chuii (Prasinophyceae) and Dunaliella viridis (Chlorophyceae)
Costa, Rauquírio André Albuquerque Marinho da;Koening, Maria Luise;Macedo, Sílvio José de;
Brazilian Archives of Biology and Technology , 2004, DOI: 10.1590/S1516-89132004000300016
Abstract: the effect of different concentrations (10, 20, 30 and 40%) of urban secondary sewage on the growth of tetraselmis chuii (prasinophyceae) and dunaliella viridis (chlorophyceae) was examined to verify the possibility of its use as an alternative culture medium for these species. stocks and 700ml duplicate batch cultures were maintained under controlled laboratory conditions. 30% and 40% additions were the most efficient for the growth of both species. statistical analysis of the adjusted growth (cell.ml-1) and biomass (μg chlorophyll-a.ml-1) curves performed using the chi-square test (p<0.05) demonstrated significant differences between the nutritive medium f/2 and the 40% addition used for these two species. the results suggested that some of the concentrations tested here yielded satisfactory cell densities and growth rates when compared with other culture media (macroalgae, bovine and chicken manure extracts). thus it could be used by semi intensive aquaculture systems.

Open Journal of Nursing (OJN) , 2017, DOI: 10.4236/ojn.2017.77063
Abstract: For many years, there has been a growing demand for patient-centered care in inpatient settings, but a lack of clear consensus on how to exactly implement such programs. The main aim of this study was to analyze patient-centered care in the acute-care setting in a multidimensional manner from the perspectives of elderly patients, their relatives, and an independent observer. A multi-method design was used to capture the three perspectives. Passive observations and post-situational interviews with patients were integrated with semi-structured interviews with patients and their relatives. 18 elderly patients and their relatives (n = 8) were recruited on wards for internal medicine of six hospitals. The data show significant deficits in patient-centered care in the acute-care setting. Although individual patients have different needs, certain categories of deficits emerge as universally relevant, one being the patient-provider-relationship. Patients express a desire for more frequent contact with the hospital staff. Access to doctors and nurses is particularly limited at night and on weekends. The patients are aware of these limitations and often do not draw attention to their own needs to reduce the workload on the staff. The wishes and needs of patients are not always adequately addressed. However, patients, relatives and the independent observer take positive notice of some employees because of their patient-centered attitude. The results show that there is still a need for improvement of patient-centered care. Participants from all three perspectives described differences between employees within the same institutional setting. This finding suggests that patient-centered care strongly depends on the personality of the individual caregiver.

Revista Educa??o Especial , 2008,
Open Journal of Ecology (OJE) , 2017, DOI: 10.4236/oje.2017.77032
Abstract: Abiotic parameters and phytoplankton were collected during 2010 and 2011 with the purpose of describing the phytoplankton distribution and the environmental characteristics. The diatoms were the most representative group in terms of species richness; in terms of density, the Cyanobacteria were more representative. Diversity and equitability were generally low in the estuary due to the dominance of Microcystis aeruginosa, an opportunistic and potentially toxic species of Cyanobacteria. The estuarine region is strongly impacted by high pollutant loads, especially nitrogen and phosphate compounds. Historical series of Apparent Oxygen Utilization (AOU) showed negative trends associated with changes in the estuarine system. The main biological components changed through 1999-2011 period. The dominance of the species changed from the Bacillariophyta in previous studies to the Cyanobacteria in our study. The species Microcystis aeruginosa, through its high density, dominance and frequency of occurrence, was the key species in the area.

Agro@mbiente On-line , 2012,
Abstract: The nutritional deficiencies on corn culture contribute significantly to the fall in productivity and, consequently, of the farmer gain. It is important to identify the nutritional deficiencies at the beginning of the plant cycle so that providences can be taken in at time to save the harvest. Thus, this objective of this study was to identify the deficiency symptoms of the nutrients nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, sulfur, iron, boron, manganese, zinc, molybdenum, and copper in hybrid corn BRS 1010. The experimental design was entirely randomized with thirteen treatments and three repetitions, consisting of a total of thirty nine experimental parcels. Each parcel was represented by a Leonard vase contained two plants. The ‘complete’ treatment was represented by plants that received, through of nutrition solution, everybody the essential nutrients to growth and development. The other treatments were formed by subtraction of every one of the essential nutrients, with the others supplied normally. The deficiency symptoms of each macro and micronutrients were recorded during all periods of the experiment. The diagnosis method by subtraction showed to be very efficient to visually evaluate the symptoms of nutritional deficiency in corn.

Journal of Cancer Therapy (JCT) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/jct.2014.57074
Abstract: Background: Patients with Barrett’s esophagus have an increased risk of developing esophageal adenocarcinoma. Our purpose was to determine CDX2 expression in esophageal mucosa and establish a correlation between this marker and the progression of disease. Methods: We analyzed biopsies and surgical specimens from 150 patients who were divided into five groups according to histopathological diagnosis: G1, normal mucosa (n = 29); G2, esophagitis (n = 19); G3, columnar epithelium without intestinal metaplasia (n = 26); G4, Barrett’s esophagus (n = 32), and G5, adenocarcinoma (n = 44). Immuno-histochemical determination of CDX2 expression was considered positive in the presence of nuclear staining. Results: No CDX2 expression was detected in the G1 or G3 groups; 5% of G2, 62.5% of G4 and 70.5% of G5 patients were CDX2 positive. There was a statistically significant difference between the G4 and G5 groups compared to the G1, G2 and G3 (p < 0.05). Conclusions: CDX2 expression was observed among patients with Barrett’s esophagus and adenocarcinoma compared to other groups. CDX2 was not expressed in the phases preceding Barrett’s esophagus, but there was no linear correlation between CDX2 expression and metaplasia-adenocarcinoma progression.
