Professional development of science teacher educators in the context of innovation: Theoretical and methodological grounds for the analysis of a programme

Abstract: In this article, we begin with a special section dedicated to identifying and describing the challenges that teacher-educators are likely to encounter, as they design and implement a programme to help teachers learn new paradigms of teaching and learning, in the context of the improvement of Science teaching. Thus, we understand that not only the teachers will need to reconstruct their knowledge, but, as well, the teacher- educators who, will need to check their craft. Subject to the perspective of theoretical and methodological review, we present, in this first step, an explanation of a instrument to help the analysis of a professional development programme for Science teacher educators, in the context of integration between the Faculty of Education, University of S o Paulo, the Regional Directory of Teaching and the Public Schools. As a result, we identify the main aspects that such a programme needs to include, for the professional development of its participants, in order to facilitate the enhancement of Science teaching in primary schools.

Abstract: in this paper were analysed the recent publications about the investigations on experimentation as a strategy of physics teaching, with the objective of improving the understanding about the different possibilities and tendencies of these activities with an eye to subsidise the teachers and researchers activities at the high school level. the data analysis were based on the articles published between 1992 and 2001 in the revista brasileira de ensino de física (sbf), in its annex física na escola and also in the caderno catarinense de ensino de física (ufsc). the themes and some methodological aspects related with the proposals of experiments, as the applied mathematical emphasis, the intensity of directivity, the employment of new technologies and the relation to the quotidian were investigated. the results obtained show that the experimentation remain been of great interest of researchers, presenting this strategy a wide range of approaches and objectives to the physics teaching.

Abstract: Nesse trabalho foi analisada a produ o recente na área de investiga es sobre a utiliza o da experimenta o como estratégia de ensino de Física, com o objetivo de possibilitar uma melhor compreens o sobre as diferentes possibilidades e tendências dessas atividades tendo em vista subsidiar o trabalho de professores e pesquisadores do ensino no nível médio. A análise dos dados teve como referência os trabalhos publicados entre 1992 e 2001 na Revista Brasileira de Ensino de Física (SBF), em seu encarte Física na Escola e também no Caderno Catarinense de Ensino de Física (UFSC). Foram investigadas a área temática das publica es e diversos aspectos metodológicos relacionados com as propostas de atividades experimentais, como a ênfase matemática empregada, o grau de direcionamento das atividades, o uso de novas tecnologias e a rela o com o cotidiano. Os resultados obtidos revelaram que a experimenta o continua sendo tema de grande interesse dos pesquisadores, apresentando essa estratégia ampla gama de enfoques e finalidades para o ensino de Física.

Abstract: Recognizing the urgent need of a scientific education thet would provide for citizen participation in decision making regarding problems that affect our survival, this paper reports teachers perceptions about problems that affect the future of human kind and life in our planet. Taking as reference recent studies which approach this issue globally, we analyse science teachers conceptions concerning the present world situation. Results show a fragmentary character and an insufficient conscientization of the extent and serioussness of the problems. This finding points at the need of formative actions that would provide teachers with a more adequate perspection of those problems and of possible solutions.

Abstract: this study examined the spatial and temporal variations of six important parameters of the salt accumulation process in water samples collected along section urban of contas river. the na+, k+, ca2+ and mg2+ concentrations were determined by faas. the conductivity, total dissolved solids, na+ and ca2+ presented the largest seasonal and spatial variations in the urban area demonstrated that are appropriate indicators of urban contamination. the readily soluble salts in drainage urban, contribute for the degradation of the water of rivers located in semi-arid zones.
Interactions between carpenter bees and orchid bees (Hymenoptera: Apidae) in flowers of Bertholletia excelsa Bonpl. (Lecythidaceae)

Abstract: competition between two species of bees for the same type of floral resource may generate antagonistic behavior between them, especially in cultivated areas where food resources are limited, seasonally and locally. in this study, was tested the hypothesis of antagonism between two solitary bee species of the family apidae, eulaema mocsaryi (euglossini) and xylocopa frontalis (xylocopini), visiting the brazil nut flowers (bertholletia excelsa: lecythidaceae) in a central amazonia agricultural area. the visitation time was analyzed to detect the possible temporal overlap in the foraging of these bees. furthermore, was analyzed their interspecific interactions for manipulating flower species visited by an opponent species, as well as attempts to attack this opponent. the individuals of xylocopa frontalis visited the brazil nut flowers before eulaema mocsaryi, although the peak visitation of both did not presented significant differences. neither of the species manipulated flowers recently visited by opponent species, and there were practically no antagonistic interactions between them. thus, x. frontalis and e. mocsaryi shared the same food source in the flowers of b. excelsa due to differences in their time of visits and non-aggressive way of interacting with the opponent. this result has important implications for pollinating the brazil nut, and a possible management of x. frontalis and e. mocsaryi, since these two were the most abundant pollinators in the studied locality.

Abstract: the objective of this research is the analysis of the manner in which the issue of drinking and driving has been incorporated into the political agenda in brazil. between 1980 and 1990 the incidence of traffic accidents accounted for nearly half of the deaths caused by external factors. the numbers continue to increase. it was only during the last two decades that traffic accidents have been defined as a public health issue and incorporated within the discussions about accidents, violence and unnatural deaths. furthermore, the high occurrence of traffic accidents combined with the prevalence of drinking and driving has become a problem that must be addressed by public policy.

Abstract: the aim of this work was to measure narrow-band frequency response curves for two radial frequency filters, spatial stimuli modulated by cylindrical bessel profiles, j0, whose test frequencies were 1 and 4 cpd. five humans observers with normal or corrected visual acuity measured 15 curves for each filter with a supra-threshold response summation psychophysics method allied within a forced-choice paradigm. the results showed maximum summation effects at test frequency for filters 1 and 4 cpd surrounded on both sides by strong inhibition. these results are consistent with the existence of narrow-band radial frequency filters operating in human visual system either through summation or inhibition of specific frequency ranges.

Abstract: the goal of this work is to discuss some basic aspects of fourier analysis as a tool to be used in the approach of multiple channels of spatial frequencies on the study of visual processing of form. some of the psychophysical paradigms more frequently used to characterize response of the human visual system to spatial frequency filter of narrow-band. the linear system analysis and some psychophysical paradigms have contributed to theoretical development of perception and of the visual processing of form.

Abstract: this work discusses some aspects about feature detectors and spatial frequency analysis models in five sections. the first section describes briefly historical aspects and the basic rationale idea of each model. the second section shows the neurophysiological and psychophysical evidences about spatial frequency selectivity. the third, the fourth and the fifth sections show controversial aspects about these models: spatial frequency versus feature detectors, global versus local filtering and nonlinear versus linear spatial processing, respectively. one of the goals of this paper is to discuss important aspects about perception and visual processing of form.
