Comparative study of metal contents in Brazilian coffees cultivated by conventional and organic agriculture applying principal component analysis
Santos, José S. dos;Santos, Maria Lúcia P. dos;Conti, Melina M.;
Journal of the Brazilian Chemical Society , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-50532010000800009
Abstract: the aim of this study was to evaluate of availability of nutrients and toxic elements in green coffees produced in traditional, technological and transitional organic farms in southwest bahia-brazil. levels of the nutrients minerals were determined directly in samples of soils and coffee tissues from four farms by flame atomic absorption spectrometry (faas) and toxic elements (cr, ni, cd and pb) by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (icp oes). the application of statistical methods (cluster and principal components analysis) revealed the importance of the conversion period to guarantee a product genuinely organic during the change to organic agriculture. on the other hand, the study of correlations between agricultural methods and metals concentrations in coffee suggested that cd, cu, zn and other toxic elements contained in some inorganic fertilizers used in the traditional and technological coffee farms may cause an increase of toxic metals concentration in the crop soil, be taken up by plants, and passed on in the food chain.

Santos, José S. dos;Santos, Maria Lúcia P. dos;Alexandrino, Daniela Marques;
Journal of the Brazilian Chemical Society , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-50532011000800004
Abstract: in this study, the influence of the rainfall variability in the salinization process in surface water reservoirs located in two distinct regions in southwestern bahia, brazil was evaluated with basis in the temporal variation of electric conductivity (ec), sodium, potassium, calcium and magnesium contents on the water samples collected in the reservoirs. two reservoirs built on ocean watercourses were chosen: the anagé reservoir, situated in the semi-arid zone and the água fria reservoir, located in the atlantic forest transition zone. the determination of na, k, ca and mg were carried out by flame atomic absorption spectrometry (faas). the result obtained from this study indicates that the circulation and distribution of the chemical species in both water systems are relatively well defined. however, the water from the anagé reservoir presented the largest variations in the values of the electric conductivity and sodium adsorption ratio (sar) between of two collection periods, demonstrated a larger influence of the rain regime in the water quality of reservoir located in semi-arid zones.

Péres, Denise Siqueira;Franco, Laércio Joel;Santos, Manoel Ant?nio dos;Zanetti, Maria Lúcia;
Revista Latino-Americana de Enfermagem , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-11692008000300009
Abstract: the purpose of this article is to identify the social representations of low-income diabetic women according to the health-disease process. this is a descriptive, exploratory study. eight participants, all of them patients at a basic health unit in ribeir?o preto, were interviewed in 2003. the data were organized according to thematic content analysis and analyzed according to theory of social representations. diabetes is related to negative feelings, such as shock, anger and sadness; the diet plan is linked to the loss of pleasure, and also to health risks. the diabetic women showed an ambivalent relation to medication, perceived it as both tiring and as a resource that promotes well-being and improvements in quality of life. the negative representation of health services seems to interfere with the behavior of adherence to pharmacological treatment. understanding the representations of women with diabetes contributes to integral healthcare for diabetic patients.
Difficulties of diabetic patients in the illness control: feelings and behaviors
Péres, Denise Siqueira;Santos, Manoel Ant?nio dos;Zanetti, Maria Lúcia;Ferronato, Ant?nio Augusto;
Revista Latino-Americana de Enfermagem , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-11692007000600008
Abstract: this study aimed to identify difficulties diabetic patients face during treatment in controlling the disease. a total of 24 diabetic patients, attended in the nurse educational center for adults and elders in 2003, participated in the study. the data was collected individually, through a written report guided by a question previously elaborated, on a pre-scheduled date. the content analysis technique was used in the data analysis. the results showed several difficulties related to the treatment follow up: rejection and denial of the patient's condition, suffering and revolt due to restrictions imposed by the diet, physical activity and medication. it is possible to infer that the focus of the education approach should not be restricted to the transmission of knowledge; it should also include emotional, social and cultural aspects that also influence in the treatment follow up.

Investiga??es em Ensino de Ciências , 2000,
Abstract: Recognizing the urgent need of a scientific education thet would provide for citizen participation in decision making regarding problems that affect our survival, this paper reports teachers perceptions about problems that affect the future of human kind and life in our planet. Taking as reference recent studies which approach this issue globally, we analyse science teachers conceptions concerning the present world situation. Results show a fragmentary character and an insufficient conscientization of the extent and serioussness of the problems. This finding points at the need of formative actions that would provide teachers with a more adequate perspection of those problems and of possible solutions.

Revista Brasileira de Enfermagem , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S0034-71672008000200007
Abstract: this study aimed to understand the repercussions in the family of the care offered after the implementation of a diabetes education program. we interviewed six relatives of diabetes patients from a university center in ribeir?o preto-sp, brazil, in 2007. thematic data analysis made it possible to identify three themes: relatives recognize that the center constitutes a differential for adherence to the food plan, physical activity and medication; the center is acknowledged as an educative space to get together and control diabetes; the patient as an element that multiplies and expands the knowledge about diabetes in the family. the results indicate that the education program favorably affected the family, expanding its knowledge repertoire about treatment, and that the family core's support is fundamental in treatment adherence.
