Abstract: influenced by increased technology and globalization, brazilian hospitals are undergoing significant changes. the managerial models focused on the male model are being slowly and gradually replaced, with an expressive participation of female nurses in management positions. thus, we aimed to uncover some aspects of the relational experiences of power and gender of nine female nurse-managers working in four large and medium-sized private hospitals in belo horizonte, mg, brazil, through a qualitative case study. the results show that management discourses value a managerial style focused on the organizations’ humanized aspects, where authoritative styles have no space. in this scenario, the work of female nurse-managers strengthens teamwork, which improves their image and contributes to forming their identity.

RAE eletr?nica , 2004, DOI: 10.1590/S1676-56482004000200006
Abstract: the elaboration of the present article aimed at to promote a discussion of theoretical character concerning the power and gender relationships in organizations. for so much, it was tried to extrapolate the limitations of the approaches that defend power centrality and sovereignty, by the adoption of conceptions of relational power and power circuits. these approaches allow recognizing power effects in the relationships and interactions among individuals and in organizational practices and speeches that promote and reinforce gender asymmetries. the adopted perspective admits the existence of adhesion and resistance points to power, capable to legitimate or to deny its action, and also understands organizations as spaces in which men and women articulate their relationships through negotiation, reply and fight movements, in agreement with interests at stake. in this work, therefore, gender relationships are noticed as mechanisms and social practices that are instituted and institute actions and behaviors.

Abstract: the aim of the present study was to investigate caries prevalence and socioeconomic factors in children with sickle cell anemia. this study was conducted in 160 children with sickle cell anemia aged 3 to 12 years attending the center for hematology in recife, brazil . data collection included interviews with guardians concerning social factors and oral examinations to determine the caries prevalence. statistical analyses were performed using the kruskal-wallis and pearson's chi-square tests at a 5% significance level. the caries prevalence was 55.0%. the dmft index was 2.12, and the dmft index was 1.50. income significantly influenced dmft; the mean dmft was 4.57 in children whose family income was less than the brazilian minimum wage (bmw), whereas in children with a family income three times the bmw or higher, the mean dmft was 2.27. no statistically positive association was found between the educational level of parents and guardians and the caries indices. a statistically significant association was found between dental caries prevalence and family income.

Abstract: Endophytic bacteria may influence agricultural production in several ways, including promoting plant growth. Two experiments were conducted in order to evaluate the combination of endophytic bacteria from the Brazilian Northeast region aims at the commercial introduction of the inoculation of these bacteria in micropropagated sugarcane plants using a temporary immersion bioreactor. One experiment was done in tubes with sterile commercial substrate, and the other was done in pots with soil; both were installed in a greenhouse. A mixed inoculation was performed in six inoculated endophytic diazotrophic bacteria in micropropagated sugarcane plants, variety RB92579. In the experiment with soil, the mixed inoculation significantly increased the shoot dry matter of plants without the addition of nitrogen fertilizer. However, the accumulation of total-N in the tissues showed no significant differences between treatments with and without nitrogen fertilization. The evaluation of micropropagated seedlings showed no increases in the parameters tested. The results showed that the response of inoculation in temporary immersion bioreactor micropropagation is possible, and that the application of homologous strains may have contributed to a better response by the interaction of endophytic bacteria with sugarcane RB92579. Further studies should be conducted to improve the methodology, which indicates a great potential to optimize this process on a commercial scale.

Abstract: deep neck infections are serious diseases that involve several spaces in the neck. the most dreadful complication is descending necrotizing fasciitis, which needs early diagnosis and aggressive treatment. aim: to analyze 80 treated cases of deep neck infection and propose a schematic guideline for managing this disease. method: the authors present a retrospective analysis of 80 treated cases of deep neck infection, from june 1997 to june 2003. results: odontogenic and tonsilar causes were the more frequent ones. submandibular and parapharyngeal spaces were the most frequent location of deep neck infection. staphylococcus aureus and streptococcus sp were the microorganisms more commonly isolated. conclusions: airway control should be priority in managing deep neck infections and if the patient has to be submitted to surgery special care should be taken at the moment of intubation - when curare must never be used. ct scan is the gold-standard imaging evaluation for the diagnosis of deep neck infection. morbi-mortality is high when associated with septic shock and mediastinitis. our mortality rate was 11.2% and only one, in five patients with mediastinitis, survived.
