Abstract: this study shows a program about nonverbal communication and is the continuation of a study of the failures in the perception of nonverbal communication in nurses who assist patients in nursing consultation. this study is one of the first to discuss the theme and describes the theoretical frameworks that legitimate its existence: luft & ingham (1961); birdwhistell (1970); hall (1976); steinberg (1988); silva (1989) and gagné (1980).

Abstract: this research aimed to identify the self-esteem degree and the nonverbal signs of the burn center patients at hc-fmusp. those signs complement, contradict or demonstrate the patients' feelings when they are asked about their self-esteem. the project was accomplished with 80 patient (54 women and 26 men) attended in the hospital in february 2002. it has been approved by the commissions of ethics on research of eeusp and hc-fmusp. the individual interviews with the patients were based on the scale of self-esteem validated in brazil and also based on the classification of the nonverbal signs proposed by silva. through the results we verified that 18.75% patients present low self-esteem, 32.50% medium self-esteem and 48.75% high self-esteem. we also concluded that the complement was the function of the nonverbal signs, more often during the interviews.

Abstract: this study verifies the action of therapeutic touch - a complementary practice - over the process of healing of injuries caused in the skin of guinea pigs. it is a quantitative study of the experimental kind, and there was a comparison of healing speed among 10 guinea pigs that received water energized with such technique (group b) and 10 guinea pigs that received water with no treatment (group a). the project was executed in the experimental laboratory of the nursing school at the university of s?o paulo, and the length of the bruises was measured five times, at every four days. among the finds, it was observed that, after 20 days, 100% of the guinea pigs in the group b had their bruises fully healed, which did not happen to 4 guinea pigs (40%) in group a.
Ambient music in the emergency services: the professionals' perception

Abstract: due to the assistant characteristic of the emergency service, the health professional experiences countless situations that generate anxiety. this study aimed to learn the professionals' perception about the presence of classical music in the working environment. the sample was composed of 49 professionals of the adult emergency department of a medium sized private hospital. the data were collected through a questionnaire to evaluate the professional's perception. the results showed that 78% of the professionals noticed alteration in the atmosphere when the music was present, 41% believed that the music altered their personal performance; 85% believed it altered their performance in a positive way and 15% in a negative way. regarding the musical repertoire, 61% of the individuals affirmed they enjoyed the selection, 96% believed that the ambient music should be kept, while 76% of the interviewees suggested other musical genres.

Abstract: this article aimed at identifying the opinion of nurses' teachers about spirituality and spiritual assistance within their education program, as well as its presence in courses and their suggestions about spiritual aspects to be included. 24 teachers were interviewed during november 1994; 95,8% of them thought the human being to be a spiritual being, mentioning ways this dimension alter and influences daily life; 66,6% of the teachers thought about the importance to include spiritual assistance within their educational program. in the light of the variety of answers the authors emphasize the importance to reflect about this subject.
