Nova Economia , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-63512007000100003
Abstract: agricultural productivity is characterized by location patterns, represented by the so-called spatial effects, namely, spatial heterogeneity and spatial dependence. this paper analyzes the spatial effects which exert influence on agricultural land productivity at three points in time - 1991, 1997 and 2003 - at the microregional level, using exploratory spatial data analysis (esda). the main finding shows that agricultural productivity is increasingly self-correlated in space, over time. two high-high (hh) clusters are identified consistently: one of them is located in the state of s?o paulo and parts of the center-west region, while the other cluster (hh) lies in the northeastern coast.
Patterns of genetic diversity in southern and southeastern Araucaria angustifolia (Bert.) O. Kuntze relict populations
Souza, Maria Isabel Ferreira de;Salgueiro, Fabiano;Carnavale-Bottino, Mariana;Félix, Durvalina Benedita;Alves-Ferreira, Marcio;Bittencourt, Juliana Vitoria Messias;Margis, Rogério;
Genetics and Molecular Biology , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S1415-47572009005000052
Abstract: habitat fragmentation and a decrease in population size may lead to a loss in population genetic diversity. for the first time, the reduction in genetic diversity in the northernmost limit of natural occurence (southeastern brazil) of araucaria angustifolia in comparison with populations in the main area of the species continuous natural distribution (southern brazil), was tested. the 673 aflps markers revealed a high level of genetic diversity for the species (ht = 0.27), despite anthropogenic influence throughout the last century, and a decrease of h in isolated populations of southeastern brazil (h = 0.16), thereby indicating the tendency for higher genetic diversity in remnant populations of continuous forests in southern brazil, when compared to natural isolated populations in the southeastern region. a strong differentiation among southern and southeastern populations was detected (amova variance ranged from 10%-15%). from bayesian analysis, it is suggested that the nine populations tested form five "genetic clusters" (k = 5). five of these populations, located in the northernmost limit of distribution of the species, represent three "genetic clusters". these results are in agreement with the pattern of geographic distribution of the studied populations.

Ciência Animal Brasileira , 2006,
Abstract: The objective of this study was to verify the efficiency of two different extenders: TRIS/Fructose/Citric Acid/Glycerol (8 %) - (TRIS 8 %) (Morton, 1988 modified) and commercial extender - MP50) (PAPA et al., 2002) – for freezing dog semen. Ten ejaculates from different adult dogs were collected by digital manipulation. The samples semen were evaluated for sperm motility and vigor, hypo-osmotic swelling test, sperm membrane integrity, sperm morphology, ultra structural analysis in three different moments, fresh (T1), cooled (T2) and thawed (T3). The samples were packaged in 0.5 mL French straws with 40 x 106 spermatozoa/ straw, and kept at 5 0C for 60 minutes (T2); then frozen in static vapor of nitrogen for the following 20 minutes and immersed in liquid nitrogen until being thawed in 70 0C water for 8 seconds (T3). By analysis of variance, it would be possible to verify the animal effect on almost all variables observed in this study, except for sperm motility and membrane integrity. For cooled semen (T2), MP50 were significantly better for hypo-osmotic swelling test, sperm membrane integrity (p<0.05) and for thawed semen (T3), there was no significant difference between extenders. By ultra structural analysis, it was possible to verify swelling plasma and acrosomal sperm membranes in the different stages of freezing process. In conclusion, the extenders showed the same results as to morphofunctional characteristics the semen canine thawed. KEY WORDS: Semen, dog, freezing and extender.

The present study tries to bring a new perspective of the Equatorial Atlantic Ocean importance on seasonal pattern, during the summer and fall on the Amazon region. It contributes in a different way for studies in the area of climate modeling and variability of rainfall over the region. For this study, we used the model RegCM3 with Grell convection scheme, applying the donwscaling technique and using, as initial condition, NCEP/NCAR reanalysis data. After the simulations statistical method of the Bias was applied to evaluate how the accurately the model can reproduce the reanalysis seasonal rainfall. In a first analysis, it appears that the model is sensitive to FS or SAZC occurrences, as well as approaching the dynamics of the tropics and extratropics. The results suggest that the low resolution and the Grell parameterization are the main factors for inadequate quality of the simulations. Although the Grell scheme is suitable for areas with intense convection and strong vertical movements, an adjustment to the physical characteristics of the region is required. This study contributed to the improvement of regional climate models for the Amazon region, considering the contribution of ocean-atmosphere processes, during the summer and autumn in the so
