Abstract: the objective of this work was to evaluate the effects of high density planting on 'tommy atkins' mango trees cultivated in subhumid warm tropical climate in northeastern brazil. treatments consisted of five spacial arrangements of plants (8x5 m, 7x4 m, 6x3 m, 5x2 m and 4x2 m), which resulted in the following plant densities: 250 (control), 357, 555, 1,000 and 1,250 plants per hectare. plant vegetative and reproductive variables, besides fruit quality parameters, were evaluated at seven and eight years after transplantation to the field. in general, high density planting caused reduction in vegetative and reproductive variables of individual mango trees, but had little influence on fruit quality. above 555 plants per hectare, a significant decrease was observed in mango tree growth. furthermore, there were decreases in the percentage of flowering, fruit yield per plant and per area. however, planting density up to 357 plants per hectare, in spite of decreasing plant growth and fruit yield per tree, increases fruit yield per area in 30% in comparison to the control.

Abstract: the negative inotropic effect of aqueous fraction (aqf) obtained from the acetic extract of psidium guajava l leaf was investigated on the guinea pig left atrium. myocardial force was measured isometrically (27 ± 0.1 oc, 2 hz). aqf (100 μg/ml) reduced contractility of about 85 ± 9.4 % (n = 4, p < 0.001, fcalc = 51.70, f(0.01; 4; 21) = 5.09, ec50 = 14.28 ± 3 μg/ml) in a concentration-dependent fashion. this effect was reduced by 20 mm of tetraethylammonium (tea), increasing ec50 to 50 ± 7 μg/ml (n = 4, p < 0.001, fcalc = 282.13; f(0.01; 21; 66) = 2.36). aqf (100 μg/ml) shifted to the right the cacl2 concentration-effect curve, increasing the ec50 from 2170 ± 112 to 2690 ± 132 μm (n = 3, p < 0.001, fcalc = 220.80 ; f(0.01; 29; 60) = 2.19). l-name (100 μm) did not modify the aqf inotropic effect (n = 3, p > 0.05) sugesting that the oxide nitric pathway did not participate of the action mechanism of aqf. we can conclude that aqf depresses the atrial contractile by reducing the calcium entry in myocardial cells and also by openenig potassium channels of cardiac tissue.

JISTEM - Journal of Information Systems and Technology Management , 2006, DOI: 10.4301/S1807-17752006000200005
Abstract: literature review shows minimum ability levels of information technology (it) resources in use are currently essential to administrators and to professionals overall. as effective as internet may be, new milestones for economic competition and company survival are being created. it is thus required that individual it abilities are continuously reformulated to be adequately and creatively used, and new information sources and tools actively generated, rather than passively adopted. in evaluating the evolution of the it abilities' acquisition in brazil, students of business & administration from a university are investigated. by means of questionnaire and in-depth interview application, data were collected on students' perceptions of acquired abilities and importance of it competencies. together, computing science teachers and a course coordinator views were assessed. empirical results obtained revealed that students' it abilities were concentrated on basic computing science functions. the integration of it learning in classroom practices was deemed poor as compared to importance attributed. students signalized self-sufficiency or knowledge attitudes which, as tested, have not been actually proved. low learning results were observed on it conceptual knowledge, indicating students' impatience with learning without interaction, as in long-text readings or teacher-centered classes. strong student resistance to electronic commerce was evidenced and associated to perceived risks on it evolution.
