Effect of an Educational Intervention by Attendance and at Distance on Nurses’ Knowledge about Pressure Ulcer  [PDF]

Abstract: The effect of an educational intervention by attendance and at distance on the knowledge of nurses about pressure ulcer (PU) was verified. An experimental research with a post-test control group was undertaken. A randomized sample of 43 nurses in a Control Group (CG) (N = 20) was submitted to an educational intervention by attendance and an Experimental Group (EG) (N = 23) was submitted to an intervention at distance. Data were collected between January and April 2012 in three phases, which were: location, invitation, registration and adaptation of the nurses to Moodle, educative intervention and post-test. The mean number of correct answers on the posttest among the nurses who participated in the intervention by attendance was 34.0 (sd = 3.3), against 36.2 (sd = 2.7) for the nurses in the distance education intervention. This difference in means was statistically significant (p = 0.019). The research evidenced that continuing education in nursing through distance education (DE) can be effective due to its practicality and interactivity and because it allows nurses in clinical practice to decide on the best time and place to access the content and improve their knowledge about PU.

Este artículo se basa en la investigación donde se identificaron los tipos de contratación vigentes en el sector industrial de Pereira y Dosquebradas que permitieron visualizar las ventajas y desventajas para el empleador y el trabajador.

Abstract: the chemical and biochemical composition of mango, varies according to the cultivation conditions, variety and maturation state, generally containing a high level of ascorbic acid. in order to establish the correlation between the activity of the ascorbate oxidase [e.c.1.10.3.3], and ascorbic acid level in the ripening process of the haden mango (mangífera índica l.), sample of the fruits related to hard green stage (zero), 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12 and 14 days stored at 20 ± 2oc, were tested. the samples were obtained by cutting small cubes of 8 cm3 from pulps of 8 mangoes with texture without significant difference (p£0.05) at magness-taylor pressure tester scale. in each sample the activity of ascorbate oxidase was followed, in order to check its participation in possible substrate losses during the ripening fruits. the ascorbic acid level and sensory profile also was determined periodically during the ripening period. the enzymatic activity was spectrophotometrically determined at 245 nm and 30oc. the ascorbic acid was analyzed according modified aoac methodology, and sensory analysis by descriptive quantitative analysis. data were analyzed using correlation analysis, analysis of variance (anova), tukey's test, principal component analysis and stepwise discriminant analysis. during the ripening, the ascorbate oxidase activity increased (from 0 to 5.0 x 10-1 u/ml) and the ascorbic acid level decreased (from 209.3 mg to 110.0 mg per 100g of pulp), showing a significant (p£0.05) inverse linear correlation (r=-0.98). the descriptors terms for mangoes were: characteristic flavor, characteristic aroma, sourness, astringency, yellow coloration of pulp, sweetness and succulence. the sensory profile presented significant improvement during ripening. all sensory attributes increased significantly (p£0.05) except sourness and astringency, wich decreased during the ripening of mangoes.

Abstract: polymeric nanoparticles have been produced by pre-formed polymers using aliphatic polyesters, which have been widely used to incorporate lipophilic drugs. the production of nanoparticles (nanospheres and nanocapsules) by pre-formed polymers can be performed by emulsification-solvent evaporation, solvent replacement, salting out or by emulsification-solvent diffusion. these methods are reviewed and discussed in this article, highlighting the technological parameters that influence the physicochemical characteristics of nanoparticles, such as the solubility of drug, the volume and ph of polymerization, the molecular weight and monomer concentration and the nature and concentration of the surfactant.

Abstract: polymeric nanoparticles obtained from synthetic polymers such as copolymers of methacrylic acid, acrylic esters or metacrylics, have been widely used in pharmaceuticals for encapsulation of drugs. these nanoparticles have the advantages of drug protection, controlled release, improved bioavailability and lower toxicity, resulting in greater comfort to patients and compliance to the treatment. the production of nanoparticles (nanospheres and nanocapsules) by polymerization of monomers is reviewed and discussed in this article, highlighting the technological parameters that affect the physicochemical characteristics of nanoparticles, e.g. drug solubility, phase volume, ph of polymerization, molecular weight and monomer concentration, and the nature and concentration of the surfactant.

Abstract: A composi o química e bioquímica da manga, varia de acordo com as condi es da cultura, variedade e estágio de matura o, geralmente contendo alto conteúdo de ácido ascórbico. Com o objetivo de estabelecer o papel da ascorbato oxidase [E.C.1.10.3.3], sobre os níveis de ácido ascórbico durante o processo de amadurecimento de manga (Mangífera índica L.) var. Haden, foram analisadas amostras da fruta correspondentes aos estágios verde maturo (zero) e armazenadas por 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12 e 14 dias a 20 ± 2oC. As amostras foram obtidas das polpas cortadas em pequenos cubos de aproximadamente 8 cm3 de 8 mangas com textura sem diferen a significativa entre elas, medidas com auxílio de um penetr metro Magness-Taylor. Em cada amostra foi determinada atividade de ascorbato oxidase para verificar sua participa o em possíveis quedas de ácido ascórbico durante o amadurecimento das frutas. Também foram determinados periodicamente o teor de ácido ascórbico e o perfil sensorial durante o período de amadurecimento. A atividade enzimática foi determinada espectrofotometricamente a 245 nm 30oC, o ácido ascórbico foi analisado de acordo com a metodologia da AOAC modificada e a análise sensorial através de análise descritiva quantitativa. Os dados da análise sensorial foram analisados através de análise de variancia (ANOVA), testes de médias de Tukey, análise de componentes principais e análise discriminante por passos. Durante o amadurecimento, a atividade da ascorbato oxidase aumentou e o teor de ácido ascórbico diminuiu, havendo significativa (p£0,05) correla o linear negativa (r=-0,98). Os termos descritores para a manga foram: sabor característico, aroma característico, acidez, adstringência, colora o amarela da polpa, do ura e suculência. O perfil sensorial apresentou significativa melhora com o amadurecimento. Todos os atributos sensoriais aumentaram significativamente (p£0,05) durante o amadurecimento das mangas, exceto acidez e adstringência.
Effect of tannic acid on spontaneous and methyl methanesulfonate-induced micronuclei in mice

Abstract: El efecto del ácido tánico (AT) de la compafiía Vetec Química Fina Ltda., Brasil, en la frecuencia de eritrocitos policromáticos micronucleados (EPm) espontáneos e inducidos por metilmetanosulfonato (MMS) fue investigado en la médula ósea de ratón. AT (500 mgkg) fue administrado por una sonda intragástnca a ratones BALBIc machos y hembras adultas como tratamiento único, 6 h antes de una inyección intraperitoneal (ip) de MMS (50 mgkg), al mismo tiempo del MMS y 6 h después del tratamiento con MMS. Para estimar la actividad de dosis respuesta, fueron probadas tres dosis de AT (250, 500 y 750 mg/kg) como pre-tratamiento de 6 h. Los análisis de la frecuencia de EPm en los diferentes grupos mostraron que: 1) un solo tratamiento de AT no afecta la incidencia de EPm espontáneos; 2) la frecuencia de EPm inducida por MMS disminuyó solamente en algunos machos pretratados con AT, 3) la disminución de la frecuencia de EPm en machos pre-tratados con AT no fue dependiente de la dosis. Estos resultados indican que la protección contra la genotoxicidad inducida por AT debe ser analizada con cuidado.

Abstract: objective: to analyze the frequency of human leukocyte antigens class ii-dr in children and adolescents with systemic lupus erythematosus. patients and methods: fifty-fivebrazilian systemic lupus erythematosus children and adolescents and 308 healthy individuals were studied. gender, race, and age of onset of systemic lupus erythematosus were recorded. the human leukocyte antigens typing of class ii-dr was carried out by polymerase chain reaction amplification with sequence-specific primers (pcr-ssp). data were analyzed statistically using the chi square test with yates' correction, fisher's exact test, and bonferroni's correction. results: human leukocyte antigen-dr 15 was the most frequently detected antigen in this group of children and adolescents, and it also occurred more frequently in the female group, in children with onset of systemic lupus erythematosus between 0 and 9 years and between 10 to 14 years, and in the black race group, but these associations were not statistically significants. conclusion: in this group of children and adolescents with a high degree of racial admixture, we could not verify a significant association between human leukocyte antigens class ii-dr and systemic lupus erythematosus.
