Abstract: objective: to assess the effect of endogenous estrogens on the bioavailability of nitric oxide (·no) and in the formation of lipid peroxidation products in pre- and postmenopausal women. methods: nox and s-nitrosothiols were determined by gaseous phase chemiluminescence, nitrotyrosine was determined by elisa, cox (cholesterol oxides) by gas chromatography, and cholesteryl linoleate hydroperoxides (ce18:2-ooh), trilinolein (tg18:2-ooh), and phospholipids (pc-ooh) by hplc in samples of plasma. results: the concentrations of nox, nitrotyrosine, cox, ce18:2-ooh, and pc-ooh were higher in the postmenopausal period (33.8±22.3 mm; 230±130 nm; 55±19 ng/ml; 17±8.7 nm; 2775±460 nm, respectively) as compared with those in the premenopausal period (21.1±7.3 mm; 114±41 nm; 31±13 ng/ml; 6±1.4 nm; 1635±373 nm). in contrast, the concentration of s-nitrosothiols was lower in the postmenopausal period (91±55 nm) as compared with that in the premenopausal p in the premenopausal period (237±197 nm). conclusion: in the postmenopausal period, an increase in nitrotyrosine and a reduction of s-nitrosothiol formation, as well as an increase of cox, ce18:2-ooh and pc-ooh formation occurs. therefore, ?no inactivation and the increase in lipid peroxidation may contribute to endothelial dysfunction and to the greater risk for atherosclerosis in postmenopausal women.

Psychology (PSYCH) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/psych.2014.512155

There is much to be explored about the relationship of families with school regarding the use of educational institutions for children up to six and the effective co-responsibilities in the whole development of the child. Analyzing aspects of this which permeate public institutions for Early Childhood Education was the focus of this research, which discusses types of access, the expectations of families and actors involved with public institutions in the network of schools in the city of Rio de Janeiro, and the educational and social function of this stage of learning. The article focuses on the inclusion of children in the educational institution, based on on-site observation in two public institutions that use differentiated policies for child care: the first, under the aegis of the Full Early Childhood Program (“PIC”) targeting children up to three; the second being developed in the Child Development Center (“EDI”) conceived as a new model for early childhood education, bringing together in the same space children up to six. In addition to observing these two policies for working with children, school administrators and families were interviewed. It transpires that, in some situations, the school adopts attitudes that reinforce social and cultural differences; in others, the school is working towards maximizing its ability to produce new ways of giving quality care to the population.

Geografias do Mundo Imaginado
Alegria,Maria Fernanda;
Finisterra - Revista Portuguesa de Geografia , 2010,
Abstract: the idea that geography is more about the construction of images of the world than about a given ?objective reality? inspired this study of the mental representations of several countries. among the multiple possible representations of 12 countries (portugal, france, norway, egypt, mauritania, mozambique, united states, mexico, brazil, china, pakistan and saudi arabia), we began by charting their location in a world map as indicated by over 300 respondents with at least high school attendance. then, the compilation of a vast number of mental images (three per country and respondent) led to the definition of six general categories that bring together mental images of a similar kind: nature, culture and history, tourism and gastronomy, economy and society, specific places and no answer/wrong answers. in each category, we have highlighted the dominant (most frequent) idea. location, the relative frequency of the no answer/wrong answers category and the dominant images for each country all proved significant when it comes to dividing the countries into groups, and serve as indicators of the richness and variety of the mental representations. the study provided answers to some of the original research questions, but leaves many others unanswered.
A Fran?a Antártica, o corso, a conquista e a "pe?onha luterana"
Bicalho, Maria Fernanda B.;
História (S?o Paulo) , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-90742008000100004
Abstract: toward the end of 1555, some french ships under the command of nicolas durand de villegagnon arrived in guanabara bay. there had been many french vessels navigating in those areas, trading with the native indians, shipping away heavy loads of brazilwood trees. villegagnon’s expedition and the creation of the french antarctic, though having much more complex and lasting aims, will be analysed here based on the portuguese-french dispute for wealth, for trade and for domination of the high seas. in other words, this article intends to argue, from the experience of the french antarctic, the recurrent threats represented by the french corsair in the south atlantic. an approach toward the corsair’s dynamism permits us to comprehend the greater movement within the european dispute for the seas and territorial colonies. the feeling of fear it provoked at that time, influenced the contexture of modern colonialism, making it possible to interpret the seals and the significant printed matter in rio de janeiro in the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries.

Abstract: authors interested in the late 18th century bourbon reforms have paid quite a lot of attention to both the enlightenment ideal and to the economic and administrative measures implemented by the spanish empire in the context of the so-called "defensive modernization". however, it is also true that they often fail to mention the legislation regarding guilds and the mark it has left on the life of craftsmen. the present article focuses not only on said legislation but on its continuity and the influence it had on guilds during the early 19th century as well, in an attempt to evercome the limitations of the viewpoint from which independence is seen as a dividing line after which the colonial period does not seem to have any influence on republican life. furthermore, although in this same direction, the social practices (civil and religious festivities) maintained by the craftsmen of pasto during this period are described and contrasted.

Bicalho, Maria Fernanda;

Abstract: this article explores the 18th century notion to transfer the capital of the portuguese empire from lisbon to rio de janeiro, based on the proposals of d. luis da cunha, one of the most prominent advisers to d. john v (d. jo?o v). in order to contextualize da cunha's political policies (instru??es políticas), written in 1736, and to analyze the choice of rio de janeiro to host the portuguese court, the following pages seek to examine not only the growth of the city as a centre of influence, but notably the increasing importance of the jurisdictions and the concerns of those who ruled the colony. these individuals having been the main exponents in the transformation of rio de janeiro into a hub of great strategic and geopolitical significance to the portuguese monarchy throughout the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
Os sentidos do trabalho de limpeza e conserva??o
Diogo, Maria Fernanda;
Psicologia em Estudo , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S1413-73722007000300005
Abstract: based on the historical and dialectic perspective, current essay reflects on the meaning of working in cleaning and conservation services in a service firm employing female labor. the progressive-regressive analysis highlights the objectification of subjects and recovers particularities within the universal factor, involving past, present and future dimensions. choice has been motivated by economical need and poor schooling. devaluating aspects have been enhanced within the meanings commonly given to this type of labor, even though it is important and central in the lives of these female laborers. positiveness exists due to the fact of being a laborer, or rather, having a job backed by labor laws and thus providing for family maintenance. job favors social and friendly contacts outside the home. with regard to the future, such a profession showed itself to be less attractive and a change of job surely occurs when another opportunity of professional insertion comes in the way.

Os republicanos e a aboli??o
Fernandes, Maria Fernanda Lombardi;
Revista de Sociologia e Política , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-44782006000200013
Abstract: this paper discusses the relationship that exists between brazilian republicans and the idea of the abolition of slavery. the republicans did not form a monolithic bloc; figures such as luís gama and silva jardim, for example, did not dissociate the struggle for the republic from the struggle for abolition, thus standin in contrast to republican landowners who, without struggling directly against abolition, made no efforts on its behalf. the most "radical" of republicans, those who sought to associate both struggles, would eventually have to break with the official republican movement - cases in point, patrocínio and gama - or collude with republican slave and landowners - as was the case of silva jardim. cissions within the more radical field of the republican movement contributed to strengthening the more "moderate" or even the "conservative" republican groups that came to dominate brazilian republicanism. our central hypothesis is that the treatment given to the issue of abolition was fundamental in determining the shape that the republic took on in brazil.
