Abstract: introduction: minimally invasive and video-assisted cardiac surgery (vacs) has increased in popularity over the past 15 years. the small incisions have been associated with a good aesthetic effect and less surgical trauma, therefore less postoperative pain and rapid recovery. objectives: to present our series with vacs, after 6 years of use of the method. methods: 136 patients underwent vacs, after written consent, between september 2005 and october 2011, 50% for men and age of 47.8 ± 15, 4anos, divided into two groups: with cardiopulmonary (cec) (gccec=105 patients): mitral valve disease (47/105), aortic disease (39/105), congenital heart disease (19/105) and without extracorporeal circulation (cec) (gscec=31 patients): cardiac resynchronization (18/ 31), cardiac tumor (4/31) and minimally invasive coronary artery bypass grafting (6/31). gccec was held in right minithoracotomy (3 to 5 cm) and femoral access to perform cannulation. results: in gccec, mean length of icu stay and hospital stay were respectively 2.4 ± 4.5 days and 5.0 ± 6.8 days. twelve patients presented complications in post-operative and five (4.8%) death. ninety-three (88.6%) patients evolved uneventful, were extubated in operating room, and remained a mean of 1.8 ± 0.9 days in icu and 3.6±1.3 days in the hospital. in gscec, were mean 1.3 ± 0.7 days in icu and 2.9 ± 1.4 days in hospital and without complications or deaths. conclusion: the results found in this series are comparable to those of world literature and confirm the method as an option the conventional technique.
Bulk Density in Jack Bean’s Development Grown in Cerrado Oxisol  [PDF]

Abstract: The use of cover plants promotes the recycling of nutrients and the increase in organic mass, and minimizes the effects of erosion. The objective was to evaluate the effect of bulk density in the development of jack bean (Canavalia ensiformis) in Cerrado Oxisol. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse at the Federal University of Mato Grosso, Rondonópolis-MT, in the period from June to September 2013. Oxisol was used from a Cerrado reserve area, collected at 0 - 0.20 m depth. The experimental design was completely randomized, corresponding to bulk density levels (1.0, 1.2, 1.4, 1.6 and 1.8 Mg·m-3), and five replications. The experimental plot consisted of three PVC rings (polyvinyl chloride) with 150 mm internal diameter, 300 mm total height, where the upper and lower rings of pots were filled with 1.0 Mg·m-3 density soil and intermediaries according to bulk density treatments. The results were submitted to variance analysis and, when significant, to regression analysis, both with a 5% probability, using SISVAR software. At 60 days after germination, number of leaves, stem diameter, plant height, dry mass of leaves, stem dry mass, dry mass of roots, dry mass of nodules, number of nodules and chlorophyll index (SPAD index) were evaluated. The increase in bulk density negatively influences the development of jack bean, showing little efficiency as a decompacting plant in Cerrado Oxisol.
Genotype of Melatonin Receptor MT1 (MTNR1A) and Puberty in Mediterranean Italian Buffalo

Abstract: In adult buffaloes, polymorphism of the MT1 receptor gene has shown to influence the reproductive seasonality. The aim of study was to assess whether the polymorphism of the MTNR1A gene may influence puberty in Mediterranean Italian buffalo.The study was conducted using 50 prepubertal buffalo cows that at the age of 15 months were placed into the group where there was the male. Estrus detection was performed by observing estrous-behaviour and pregnancy checking by palpation per rectum and/or ultrasound between days 40 and 60 post-mating. Also of each animal dates of calving was recorded. From each buffalos a blood sample was collected and used for DNA extraction. PCR analysis was performed using 100-150 ng of DNA to amplify the second exon of the MTNRA1 gene. All PCR products were digested with 2U of enzyme HpaI to highlight the polymorphism at position 82 (characterized by a C to a T substitution) of the MTNR1A gene. Frequency of C and T alleles was respectively 0.42 and 0.58 in the analyzed population which resulted in Hardy Weinberg equilibrium. The genotypic frequency was 28% for genotype C/C, 38% for C/T and 34% for T/T. The registration of reproductive data showed that the first heat is around the age of 20 months and the first calving around 32 months. Our data show that the genotype of the MTNR1A does not influence the onset of reproductive activity in prepubertal buffalo cows.
Development of Safflower Subjected to Nitrogen Rates in Cerrado Soil  [PDF]

Abstract: In a context in which the nitrogen fertilizer recommendations in the literature for safflower crop show up conflicting, it was aimed by the present study to evaluate the development of safflower when subjected to nitrogen rates in an Oxisol collected under Cerrado vegetation. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse using pots filled with Oxisol collected in area under Cerrado vegetation in the layer from 0.0 to 0.20 m. Each experimental unit was represented by a plastic pot of 5 dm-3, the experimental design was completely randomized, consisting of six nitrogen rates (0, 60, 120, 180, 240 and 300 mg°dm-3) and six repetitions. It were assessed plant height, number of leaves, chlorophyll content, number of heads, dry mass of shoot and dry mass of root. The results were submitted to variance analysis and, when significant, to regression analysis, both at 5% probability by SISVAR program. Nitrogen rates positively influence the development of safflower, and the one that best promotes this development is between 160 and 190 mg°dm-3.
Reproductive Components of Safflower Genotypes Submitted of Bulk Density Levels in the Brazilian Cerrado  [PDF]

Abstract: Nutrient absorption in crops can decline and their development can be hindered by increased bulk density. This study aimed at assessing the manner in which bulk density levels affect the reproductive structures of the safflower genotypes in the Brazilian Cerrado. The completely randomized design was adopted with four replications for the experiment, which was conducted in a greenhouse using Oxisol collected from 0.0 to 0.2 m depth from the region supporting Cerrado vegetation. The treatments included ten safflower genotypes (PI 237538, PI 248385, PI 250196, PI 301049, PI 305173, PI 305205, PI 306520, PI 306603, PI 560202 and PI 613366) and five bulk density levels (1.0, 1.2, 1.4, 1.6 and 1.8 Mg·m-3). Evaluations were done at 90 days after emergence, in terms of the number, diameter and dry mass of the heads. The data were submitted to the analysis of variance. The means were grouped using the Scott-Knott test at 5% probability. The diameter and dry mass of the chapters were influenced by the mean bulk density of 1.10 Mg·m-3. A notable interaction was evident between the safflower genotypes and bulk density levels for the diameter and dry mass of the head alone, revealing the high degree of genetic variability that environmental changes induce among the genotypes. The PI 250196, PI 301049, PI 305173 and PI 305205 genotypes exhibited greater stability to the bulk density variations compared with the others. Mean bulk density of 1.2 Mg·m-3 was found to impair the development of the reproductive components of the safflower genotypes.

Abstract: the purpose of the article was to identify a problematic, challenges and strategies recommended in those texts and analysis the applicability of such recommendations reflected on papers published from 2005-2008. a thematic analysis was applied to the full texts available on lilacs data base. results showed that the development of nursing research was articulated to the neoliberal and globalization economic system, the national health system, the healthcare demands of population, and nursing profession. the post-graduation expansion in latin america was a result of the international efforts of the brazilian post-graduation programs, and the increase number of nurse researchers as well as center of nursing research. because the scientific production is inserted on academic field, the research findings do not become healthcare policy yet. nursing organizations and their partners need to continue making efforts to overcome old challenges and to build new meanings for nursing research.
An alternate technique for isolation of Toxocara canis excretory-secretory antigens

Abstract: the aim of the present study was to test the effectiveness of a sausage-casing membrane for dialysis of toxocara excretory-secretory antigens (tes). the protein concentrated by the tested membrane was compared with that obtained using a sigma commercial membrane, as were the protein fractions found by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. standard positive and negative serum samples were evaluated in an elisa immunoassay, and equivalent data were obtained in all steps, indicating that the sausage-casing membrane is efficient, besides being less expensive to process.
Conservation efforts and awareness campaigns for the marine manatee (Trichechus manatus) preservation along the northearstern coast of Brazil

Abstract: Due to high hunting pressure practiced against marine manatees since the period of colonization of Brazil, it was found the reduction of the remaining populations. Despite the ban on laws prohibiting hunting of manatees, only in the early 80's that a strategy to promote conservation of the species began to be structured. Thus, this paper reports the development of the first two stages of the Plan of Work Center Peixe-Boi/IBAMA, with emphasis on the Awareness Campaign. The campaign was to reach the coastal area of Sergipe to Piauí, and the route taken by a mobile unit called "Igarakuê", which is a Toyota 4x4 Bandeirantes. Interviews were conducted with fishermen, given lectures to students and residents of local communities, linking audio messages on radio and in printed articles and broadcast. During these occasions were distributed posters, books, shirts and brochures. At the end of the activities, approximately 2,000 km of coastline were covered, with 199 locations visited, 522 people interviewed and 40 speeches conducted. With it, it was possible to establish an exchange of information among researchers involved and the fishermen, where it was found knowledge of the local population about the existing legislation prohibiting hunting of the species. The material played an important role in education still serving as a tool for illustration. A network consisting of 63 employees, who came to help us stranding events involving marine manatees. It was concluded that the mobile unit "Igarakuê" played an important role in spreading the message of preservation of the manatee, triggering an educational process, that with its success and continuity, can lead to behavioral change in coastal communities and the cooperation needed to reverse the sirenian process of extinction.
The distribution and occurrence of the marine manatee (Trichechus manatus) in the estuary of the Mamanguape River, Paraíba, Brazil

Abstract: Although the existing historical records of marine manatees in the Brazilian coast since the 17th century, few studies about this species were conducted in Brazil. Among them, the estuary of the Mamanguape River is told to be the main place of this species concentration in the northeastern coast of Brazil, but this one is suffering oppression due to the improvement of human activities which can compromise the ecosystem as a whole. In this way, this work viewed to obtain information about the marine manatee′s ecology and behavior in the estuary of the Mamanguape River, establishing seasonal modifications in its emergence, checking preferable places of occupation and detecting possible human activities which interfere in its biological cycle. With this purpose, it was developed one program for marine manatee groups in the region of Bar of Mamanguape and adjacent, by direct observation and interviews with fishers from 1988 to 1991. During the studies period, 608 monitoring visits were made to Bar of Mamanguape, totalizing 285 watching of isolated or grouped manatees and 2.185 hours of observation in fixed places. The major number of sightings happened from October to May, when the animals were seen more regularly and frequently in groups. From June to September, the animals went to that region sporadically and almost always alone. The biggest group observed was one formed by nine animals and the biggest one of registered animals at the same time was by 11 manatees. It was detected that the human activities which produce many noises in the water interfere with the animals′ behavior, scaring and dispersing the groups. Purse seines, drift and gill nets, used in the region, when closer to the groups, besides scaring away the animals, can be damaged due to the possible collisions with the marine manatees. Already the more resistant gill nets (ca oás) imply extreme danger, because can flog the animals and get them to death. It is concluded that the region of the Bar of Mamanguape is of paramount importance for the maintenance of the reproductive cycle of the marine manatee, because it is one of their most concentration in the Northeast of Brazil. Creating restrictive zones within the Area of Environmental Preservation (AEP) of the Bar of Mamanguape and ranking human activities are essential for the preservation of this species.
Esfor os conservacionistas e campanhas de conscientiza o para a preserva o do Peixe-Boi Marinho (Trichechus manatus) ao longo do litoral nordeste do Brasil

Abstract: Em decorrência a alta press o de ca a praticada aos peixes-bois marinhos desde o período da coloniza o do Brasil, constatou-se a redu o das popula es remanescentes. Apesar da proibi o de leis proibindo a ca a do peixe-boi, somente no início da década 80 é que uma estratégia conservacionista em prol da referida espécie come ou a ser estruturada. Desta forma, o presente trabalho relata o desenvolvimento das duas primeiras etapas do Plano Geral de Trabalho do Centro Peixe-Boi/IBAMA, com ênfase na Campanha de Conscientiza o. A campanha teve como abrangência a área litoranea dos estados de Sergipe até o Piauí, sendo o percurso realizado por meio de uma unidade móvel denominada “Igarakuê”, sendo esta uma Toyota Bandeirantes 4x4. Foram realizadas entrevistas com pescadores, ministradas palestras para estudantes e moradores das comunidades locais, vincula o de mensagens de áudio nas rádios e reportagens na imprensa escrita e televisionada. Durante estas ocasi es foram distribuídos cartazes, cadernos, camisetas e folders. Ao término das atividades foram percorridos aproximadamente 2.000 km de litoral, sendo visitadas 199 localidades, entrevistadas 522 pessoas e realizadas 40 palestras. Com isto foi possível estabelecer uma troca de informa o entre os pesquisadores envolvidos e os pescadores artesanais, onde constatou-se o conhecimento da popula o local acerca da legisla o existente proibindo a ca a da espécie. O material utilizado cumpriu importante fun o educativa servindo ainda como instrumento ilustrativo. Foi constituída uma rede composta por 63 colaboradores, os quais passaram a ajudar nos eventos de encalhes envolvendo os peixes-bois marinhos. Concluiu-se que a unidade móvel “Igarakuê”cumpriu importante papel na dissemina o da mensagem preservacionista do peixe-boi marinho, desencadeando um processo educativo que, com seu sucesso e continuidade, pode acarretar uma mudan a comportamental das comunidades costeiras e a colabora o necessária para reverter o processo de extin o deste sirênio.
