Natural Resources (NR) , 2016, DOI: 10.4236/nr.2016.73012
Abstract: The use of renewable sources for obtainment of chemicals, biofuels, materials and energy has become each time larger due to environmental, political and economical problems of non-renewable energies utilization. Among several products that can be obtained from lignocellulosic biomass, which is a renewable source, there is furfural, a chemical from which many other value added chemical products can be obtained. The main route for furfural production consists of an acid hydrolysis of hemicelluloses present in lignocellulosic biomass to obtain xylose, which goes through a dehydration reaction to produce furfural. Due to the presence of an aldehyde group and a conjugated system of double bounds, furfural can go through several reactions, allowing the production of a range of value added products. In this sense, this article performs a review about mechanisms of furfural production from lignocellulosic biomass, highlighting its chemical properties which enable its utilization in different industrial applications of economic interest.

Influência da quantidade de am?nio na síntese de nanopartículas de óxido de ferro por microemuls?o
Fernandes, Maria Tereza Cortez;Kawachi, Elizabete Yoshie;
Química Nova , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-40422010000600004
Abstract: iron oxide nanoparticles were synthesized in microemulsion systems composed by triton x-100/hexyl alcohol/cyclohexane/aqueous solution. the nanoparticles were synthesized in microemulsions containing different amounts of ammonium, in order to evaluate the influence of this parameter on the size of the nanoparticles and on the phase transformation after heat treatment. powder materials were obtained after centrifugation, washing and drying, and they were analyzed as synthesized and after heating at 350, 500 and 1000 °c. it was observed that the higher amount of ammonium induced smaller particles and minor phase transformation, possibly due to a preferential nucleation process.

Abstract: the main target of the present essay is to carry out a reflexion on the adoption of the functional method in nursing work, as well as on the criticism to this method. a secondary aim will be to show how the nursing team has been "using" this method in their daily work routine in the search for a more humanized nursing care.
La controverse sur l’archiprêtre, ou les catholiques élisabéthains dans les coulisses de la clandestinité The Archpriest Controversy: Elizabethan Catholics behind the Scene
Sandra Jusdado-Mollmann
Revue LISA / LISA e-journal , 2009, DOI: 10.4000/lisa.368
Abstract: The most divided communities ordinarily choose to unite in the face of a powerful enemy. But when a community is ordered by the same religious ideology, when it has been forced into clandestinity, and when its very survival is at stake, this strategy seems all the more appropriate. Such is the logic that should have determined the choices of Elizabethan Catholics. But strangely enough, they did not opt for this strategy. The aim of this article is to analyse the fracture that divided the clandestine Roman Catholic clergy during the reign of Elizabeth I and which came out in the open under the name of “the archpriest controversy”. We will analyse the causes, the unfolding and the outcome of this internal scission. We will demonstrate that, contrary to what might have been expected, not only was this controversy — and the divisions it provoked within the persecuted community — the very element that ensured the survival of Catholicism in England, but it also brought about the advent of a specifically English form of Catholicism.

Abstract:

The production of mushrooms enriched with essential elements, e.g. selenium, for human health is an interesting strategy to improve the functional foods supply. The selenium is an essential mineral and makes part of structure of enzymes involved in the oxidative metabolism. However, the selenium effect on the activity of respiratory and lignocellulolytic enzymes has not been considered. The understanding of this effect is important to determine the selenium concentration that increases the mushroom productivity and the degradation rate of the substrate. In this study, it was observed reduction of the respiratory activity of Lentinula edodes (Berk.) Pegler, the shiitake mushroom, in function of the increasing of the sodium selenite concentration in the substrate (p < 0.05). Selenium did not inhibit the activity of the hydrolytic enzymes (cellulase and xylanase), but it increased the activity of the oxidative enzyme (laccase). Respiratory activity of L. edodes has a negative correlation with sodium selenite concentration added in substrate. Thus is important to define the ideal dose of selenium to be added to the substrate for increasing lignocellulosic residues degradation and, consequently, guarantee a higher production of Se-enriched mushrooms.

Costa, Jaime Murilo Fernandes;Mendes, Maria Elizabete;Sumita, Nairo Massakazu;
Jornal Brasileiro de Patologia e Medicina Laboratorial , 2012, DOI: 10.1590/S1676-24442012000100003
Abstract: introduction: ascorbic acid (vitamin c) is commonly used as a vitamin supplement. it is a water soluble vitamin, which is excreted through urine and may interfere in laboratory tests as well as redox reactions for urinary glucose detection. objective: this study aims to assess ascorbic acid interference in glycosuria detection by dry chemistry method (reagent strips). material and methods: urine samples were evaluated by using clinitek atlas chemistry analyzer (siemens healthcare diagnostics inc., usa). four urine samples with different glucose concentrations were selected: 100 mg/dl, 250 mg/dl, 500 mg/dl and > 1,000 mg/dl. 5 aliquots were created for each glucose concentration and a solution of ascorbic acid 200 mg/dl was added, sufficient to obtain a final ascorbic acid concentration of 20 mg/dl in the first tube, 50 mg/dl in the second tube, 270 mg/dl in the third tube, 1,000 mg/dl the fourth tube, and 2,000 mg/dl in the fifth tube. after the addition of ascorbic acid, the samples were reassessed by using clinitek atlas chemistry analyzer. results: there was no interference at concentrations of 20 mg/dl. however, there was ascorbic acid interference at concentrations higher than or equal to 50 mg/dl, which was characterized by false-negative results for urinary glucose detection. conclusion: the results corroborated the interference of ascorbic acid in dry chemistry method (reagent strips) inasmuch as it underestimates urinary glucose levels.

Abstract: objectives: to determine the outcomes of an intervention for follow-up of bilirubinemia in the first week of life in a cohort of newborn infants with gestational ages between 350/7 and 376/7 weeks and to determine risk factors for readmission for phototherapy (total bilirubin > 18 mg/dl). methods: retrospective cohort study carried out at a public teaching hospital. neonates underwent periodic monitoring of total bilirubin levels (measured in serum or by transcutaneous device) before and after discharge to assess the need for phototherapy. a systematic approach, based on risk percentiles of a bilirubin reference curve, was employed. results: the study sample comprised 392 neonates. only one outpatient visit was required in 61.7% of newborns. peak total bilirubin was > 20 mg/dl in 34 neonates (8.7%), and reached 25-30 mg/dl in three (0.8%). phototherapy was indicated after discharge in 74 neonates (18.9%). weight loss between birth and first follow-up visit and total bilirubin above the 40th percentile at discharge were risk factors for requiring phototherapy. total bilirubin above the 95th percentile at discharge was associated with greater risk of readmission (rr = 49.5 [6.6-370.3]). weight loss between discharge and first follow-up visit was the sole independent clinical predictor (rr = 1.16 [1.04-1.17]). conclusion: systematic follow-up during the first week of life was effective in preventing dangerous hyperbilirubinemia. encouraging breastfeeding and discharging neonates only after weight loss has been stabilized may prevent readmission due to hyperbilirubinemia.
