Abstract: chronic kidney disease (ckd) is a debilitating systemic condition. our working hypothesis is that ckd predialysis patients with periodontitis would respond poorly to periodontal treatment owing to immunologic compromise. twenty-one predialysis patients (group 1) and 19 individuals without clinical evidence of kidney disease (group 2) with chronic periodontitis were subjected to non-surgical periodontal treatment with no antibiotics. clinical periodontal and systemic parameters were evaluated at baseline and 3 months after treatment. both groups showed significant and similar post-treatment improvements in all periodontal parameters examined. most interestingly, periodontal treatment had a statistically significant positive effect on the glomerular filtration rate of each individual (group 1, p = 0.04; group 2, p = 0.002). our results indicate that chronic periodontitis in predialysis kidney disease patients improved similarly in patients with chronic periodontitis and no history of ckd after receiving non-surgical periodontal therapy. this study demonstrates that ckd predialysis patients show a good response to non-surgical periodontal treatment.

Abstract: This study investigated the effect of non-surgical periodontal therapy on the composition of subgingival microbiota of patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Sixteen CKD pre-dialysis individuals (CKD) and 14 individuals without clinical evidence of kidney disease (C) presenting chronic periodontitis were treated by scaling and root planing. Subgingival samples were collected from each patient and analyzed for their composition by checkerboard at baseline and 3 months post-therapy. Significant differences between groups at baseline were sought by the Mann-Whitney and χ2 tests. Changes over time were examined by the Wilcoxon test. At baseline, the CKD group had significantly lower counts of E. faecalis compared to the C group (p < 0.05). After treatment, the levels of a greater number of species were reduced in the C group. Higher levels of A. israelii, C. rectus, F. periodonticum, P. micra, P. nigrescens, T. forsythia, N. mucosa, and S. anginosus (p < 0.05) were found in the CKD group compared to the C group. Also, non-responsive sites in CKD individuals harbored significantly higher levels of pathogenic species (T. forsythia, P. gingivalis, T. denticola, Fusobacterium spp., D. pneumosintes, E. faecalis and S. aureus; p < 0.05) than sites that responded to therapy, as well as non-responsive sites in the C group. The periodontitis-associated subgingival microbiota of CKD and systemically healthy individuals was similar in composition. However, high levels of pathogenic species persisted in the subgingival microbiota of patients with CKD after treatment.

Abstract: the electrical conductivity test, initially developed for pea seeds, has been intensively used to evaluate seed vigor of several plant species. the objective of the present study was to establish methodology for the electrical conductivity test in sesame (sesamum indicum l.) seeds, involving periods of seed imbibition, water volume and temperatures. in two stages of the study, four seed lots, cv. preta, were evaluated by the germination test, first germination count, emergence speed, seedling shoot dry matter, seedling shoot length and field emergence, as well seed moisture content determination. for the electrical conductivity test, variations in water volume (25, 50 and 75 ml) or temperature (20, 25 and 30oc) and in imbibition period (1, 2, 4, 8, 12, 16 and 24 hours) were studied. the electrical conductivity test was efficient for the evaluation of sesame seed physiological potential and the association of 50 seeds, 50 ml distilled water and 8 hours imbibition at 25oc was the most adequate.

Abstract: this study had three main aims: (a) to know to what extend the human values are correlated with desirable attributes of an ideal partner; (b) to identify what attributes could be considered most important for an ideal partner; and (c) to assess if the importance assigned to such desirable attributes vary according to participants' gender. four hundred twenty one people of general population from jo?o pessoa-pb took part in the study with mean age of 25.9 years old. most of them were female (56.8%), single (70.5%), and with undergraduate degree (65.4%). they answered the attributes of ideal partner scale, the basic value survey and demographic questions. results indicated that a consistent set of value subfunctions were correlated with the desirable attributes of an ideal partner (e.g. the subfunctions excitement and normative were correlated with athletic and traditional dimensions, respectively). on the other hand, it was observed the role of participants' gender in differentiating the importance assigned to desirable attributes; the men appreciated more the athletic attribute, and the women did with respect to the sociable attribute. these findings were discussed based on previous research about the importance that men and women give to desirable attributes of ideal partners.
