Dental Press Journal of Orthodontics , 2013,
Abstract: OBJECTIVE: The objective of this article is to evaluate the need of orthodontic treatment, prevalence and severity of the malocclusions in individuals of black ethnicity in a representative sample of schoolchildren of the city of Salvador/Brazil, as well as to verify if the malocclusion was affected by socio-demographic conditions such as age and gender. METHODS: The reference population was constituted of schoolchildren with age between 12 and 15 years, enrolled in public and private schools. The malocclusion was evaluated in 486 students of black ethnicity, with ages varying from 12 to 15 years, selected in random sample in multiple stages. The adopted significance level was 1% and the power of the test was 90%. A questionnaire registering demographic characteristics was filled out by each individual. The Dental Aesthetics Index (DAI) was used by previously calibrated examiners (kappa 0.89), according to criteria of the World Health Organization. RESULTS: It was verified that most of the individuals (76%) had little or any need for orthodontic treatment. About 24% showed a condition of severe malocclusion, culminating in a vital need for orthodontic treatment. The main occlusal characteristics found in the group with high need of orthodontic treatment were dental crowding and accentuated overjet. The age was positively related to the improvement of the maxillary overjet and to the presence of crowding. CONCLUSION: The development of public politics that aim the insertion of orthodontic treatment among the procedures of health programs, with the implementation and development of specialized centers, is fundamental.

Abstract: introduction: the strength of the re-emergence of dengue virus and the severity of these infections put this disease in the priority agenda of the institutions responsible for protecting the health of populations. important for understanding the epidemiology of dengue nowadays refers to the knowledge of the patterns of spatial-temporal diffusion, though there is few research addressing this issue. this study describes the process of dissemination of dengue in the state of bahia, from 1994 to 2000. methods: this ecological study space-time, with the units of analysis, county, epidemiological week, month, trimester and year. there has been construction of the trend line and has been mapping the sequential occurrence of dengue in the municipality for the period. results: there were 164,050 reported cases of dengue and the introduction of this virus in bahia, unlike other states, occurred on a small city, though there is intermittency in spatial and temporal records of cases at the beginning of this epidemic. the virus circulated in all climatic zones fact what highlight its high transmission power. the highest intensity of detection of cases and territorial expansion was in the littoral (zone humid and half-humid) ideal area for the survive of the vector. conclusions: hypothetically, the intermittent space-time pattern initially observed, could have allowed the control of the progression of the epidemic, if structured action to vectorial combat was carried out.

Abstract: the effects of inoculation of sweet passion fruit plants with the arbuscular mycorrhizal (am) fungus scutellospora heterogama on the symptoms produced by meloidogyne incognita race 1 and its reproduction were evaluated in two greenhouse experiments. in the 1st, the m. incognita (5000 eggs/plant) and s. heterogama (200 spores/plant) inoculations were simultaneous; in the 2nd, the nematodes were inoculated 120 days after the fungal inoculation. in both the experiments, 220 days after am fungal inoculation, plant growth was stimulated by the fungus. in disinfested soil, control seedlings (without s. heterogama) were intolerant to parasitism of m. incognita, while the growth of mycorrhized seedlings was not affected. sporulation of s. heterogama was negatively affected by the nematodes that did not impair the colonization. m. incognita did not affect mycorrhizal seedling growth. the establishment of mycorrhiza prior to the nematode infection contributed for the reduction of symptoms severity and reproduction of m. incognita in disinfested soil.

Abstract: an available enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (elisa) was studied for the detection of anti-b. canis antibodies in the sera of dogs using, indirect fluorescent antibody test (ifat) as a reference test. elisa uses a soluble antigenic preparation of b. canis and the optimal dilutions of the antigen, serum and conjugate were determined by check board titration, using positive and negative reference serum. the soluble antigen preparation of b. canis merozoites was 10 μg.ml-1, with reference sera from positive and negative in a single dilution of 1:100, and conjugated to 1:4.000. a total of 246 serum samples were collected from dogs during the rabies vaccination campaign in jaboticabal, s?o paulo, brazil and examined for the presence of antibodies against b. canis by elisa and ifat. under these conditions, the average absorbance of negative serum was 0.129 ± 0.025, resulting in a cut-off value of 0.323 (elisa level 3) and the average absorbance of positive reference serum was 2.156 ± 1.187. the serological positive samples tested for b. canis by elisa and ifat were 67.89% (n = 167) and 59.35% (n = 146), respectively. these results suggest that elisa described may prove to be an effective serological test to diagnose canine babesiosis.
