Abstract: psychological issues are important for counselling and intervention in late-onset diseases (huntington disease, machado joseph disease and), namely in the process of adjustment to the results of genetic testing. our aim was to evaluate psychological wellbeing in persons coming for pre-symptomatic testing comparing with normal population. the psychological general well being (pgwb) schedule was developed for the purpose of providing na index that could be used to measure self-representations of intrapersonal affective or emotional states reflecting a sense of subjective wellbeing or distress. we compared the results between the group of individuals at-risk and the control group: there are significative differences regarding the anxiety and positive wellbeing factors. the group at-risk presents less anxiety and more positive wellbeing. the group at-risk shows higher psychologycal wellbeing indicators than the control group. one may have expected that individuals at-risk who came for pre-symptomatic testing were more concerned about their health and showed more adverse indicators regarding their psychological wellbeing, since they are more aware of the risk of being or not a carrier of one of those diseases. our results, however, proved to be different: the group at-risk presents less anxiety and more positive wellbeing and shows higher psychologycal wellbeing indicators than the control group. facing those results we may suggest two possible explanations(a) a defensive and denial attitude from the group of individuals at-risk, and/or that (b) these are psychologically more resilient, what may have motivated adhesion to pre-symptomatic testing, through their own auto-selection.

Gerokomos , 2007, DOI: 10.4321/S1134-928X2007000400004
Abstract: mental health was assessed in accordance with the structure proposed by ware & veit (1) which considers psychological well-being and distress. the purpose of this pilot study, carried out in madeira autonomous region (ram), was to validate the research protocol for characterising the mental health of the region’s older people. sixty three elders were chosen for the mini mental health examination and 47 of these were included in the sample. all of the people were aged 65 or older and lived in the community. nearly all of the people could carry out basic daily life activities independently. the average points score found for the mental health inventory shows that the mental health index of these older people is greater than that found by ribeiro (2) in a sample of young portuguese people. the research protocol was shown to be suitable. the results have provided us with an initial snap-shot of the mental health of the elders in madeira.

Abstract: quality assessment and evaluation becomes an issue of raising concern as the re-organization of health services in brazil has been discussed. in this review, we search for the historical background of health services evaluation and present the contemporary proposals for a systematic quality evaluation. the analyses of the studies reviewed show two major methodological trends in this area: the rationalizing-corporative and the antropological-social studies. most of both types of studies derive from the work on health services evaluation developed during the last twenty years by avedis donabedian.

Abstract: the parasitic specificity of larval, nymph and adult amblyomma cajennense on six different host species: oryctolagus cuniculus, rattus norvegicus, gallus gallus domesticus, anas platyrhynchus, coturnix coturnix and streptopelia decorata is described. in terms of the numbers of larvae and nymphs recovered, o. cuniculus was the best host species. the modal day for drop-off of larvae and nymphs was day three for the mammal hosts, but variable in the birds. we conclude that adult a. cajennense have a strong degree of specificity due to the fact that the tick failed to complete its life cycle on any of the evaluated hosts. the immature stages, on the other hand, showed a low level of specificity, most especially in the larval stage, indicating the existence of secondary hosts which probably serve as dispersers in the wild. the results also indicated a variable drop-off rhythm for larvae and nymphs in two periods, diurnal (6-18 hr) and nocturnal (18-6 hr), which differed depending upon the host.
