Personality change in older adults with dementia: Occurrence and association with severity of cognitive impairment  [PDF]

Personality change is among criteria for the diagnosis of dementia. We examine first whether personality changes are related to severity of cognitive impairment in a linear or an inverted-U fashion in 1132 demented older people from the Canadian Study of Health and Aging (CSHA) and 921 unimpaired older people. The proportion with reported change was larger for all measures in the demented group than in the cognitively unimpaired group, and was more consistent with a linear increase in personality change with increasing cognitive impairment than with an inverted-U relationship, as seen in only one variable. In our second (longitudinal) study, we evaluate which aspects of personality change most in dementia; changes in mood and an exaggeration of existing traits were the variables most closely related to the development of dementia.

Olive (Olea europaea L.) tree is one of the most extensive and important agricultural crop in Mediterranean countries due to its beneficial health and nutritional properties and its high economic value. Currently, olive tree constitutes the sixth most important cultivated plant in the world, spreading from the Mediterranean region of origin to new production areas such as Australia, South and North America and South Africa. However, the mobilization processes of storage materials i.e. reserve proteins during seed germination, which are largely involved in essential physiological process including plant growth and development, remain poorly understood. Morphometric and immunohistochemistry analyses of protein bodies contained in olive seed storage tissues, cotyledon and endosperm, were performed by using different microscopy techniques, including light (bright-field and fluorescence) microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. Furthermore, we used legumin-like proteins (11S-type globulins) as a molecular marker to study the mobilization of reserve proteins from PBs of cotyledons at germinating seedling stages by using immunofluorescence assays. Results demonstrated that cotyledon and endosperm are characterized by distinct PBs populations containing legumin-like proteins, distinctly discriminated by the number of PBs per cell and tissue, size, immunofluorescence and histochemical staining. These features reflect differential PBs biogenesis during development and maturation processes in olive seed tissues endosperm and cotyledon, in relation to proteins (polypeptides) final composition, SSPs processing and/or packaging during seed maturation. Social development is a fundamental subject that challenges professionals who work with children and teenagers. Questions such as how to behave adequately, what limits must be defined, and at the same time, how to stimulate autonomy and create a cooperative environment, are daily made, but solutions are not always satisfactory. The aim of this paper is to present a possible contribution to the discussion, describing highlights of a successful initiative. The practice in seeing children with learning disabilities at the Laboratory of Studies about Development and Learning (University of Sao Paulo), also identifies the same questions and there is a permanent search for creative solutions. For the last 25 years, groups of children from the Fundamental School were seen by professionals who organized activities in a game context, challenging them to play, develop reasoning and construct favourable attitudes. Results show that playing games in an intervention context stimulated changes in attitudes and social behaviour. As a consequence, it enabled children interact and establish a better quality of relation, based on cooperation and mutual respect.

Abstract: This report is a short overview of an intervention program in which communicative development in a game context is focused. Mastering languages and different ways of communication are indicators of cognitive development. These are some of the goals of the intervention program held at the Laboratory of Studies about Development and Learning (Institute of Psychology) to help children from the fundamental school with learning difficulties develop affective, cognitive, motor and social attitudes, in a context of problem-solving situations with games. As a consequence, they improve competence to express and interpret more adequately, as well as discuss strategies and solve different challenges, regarding the capacity of learning from others and enhancing language skills. To observe children playing communicative games allows to analyze how they think and act, which generates important information to intervene in pro of changing the attitudes that do not work in favour of the learning and developing processes. Analysis was made from data registered on records, and six children who participated at the program during three semesters were described for illustrative purpose. It indicates that this context, in which narratives are produced and where there is adult mediation, contributes to help them modify inadequate attitudes and improve the domain of different languages, expanding the repertoire of communication.
Nurse Faculty Enrichment and Competency Development in Oral-Systemic Health

Abstract: Nurses are positioned to play a significant role in oral health promotion and disease prevention across the life cycle. Oral health has not been a high priority in nursing practice, and educating nurses about oral health has been inadequate particularly regarding the interrelationship between oral health and overall health. The first step for developing a nursing workforce with core competencies in oral health promotion and disease prevention is to prepare nurse faculty with the requisite knowledge, skills, attitudes, and best practices in oral-systemic health. The purpose of this paper is to present Smiles for Life: A National Oral Health Curriculum as a knowledge framework that nurse faculty can use for faculty enrichment and competency development in oral health across the life cycle. A variety of teaching-learning strategies and resources are provided to assist nurse faculty with integrating oral-systemic health into existing nursing curricula. 1. Introduction Nurses are positioned to play a significant role in oral health promotion and disease prevention across the life cycle, and in expanding access to preventive care services especially for vulnerable and underserved populations across health care settings [1–5]. Oral health promotion and preventive care services, such as basic risk assessments, oral health examinations, referrals, counseling, and anticipatory guidance, are well within the scope of professional nursing practice. Recognizing the significance of oral health in achieving overall health and well-being, nurses can empower individuals, families, and communities with oral health information and resources to support healthy choices regarding oral hygiene, diet, tobacco, and alcohol use. Historically, oral health has not been a high priority in nursing practice [1]. Education and training of nurses about basic oral health and oral-systemic health has been inadequate [5–7]. In 2007, a survey of academic deans and administrators from accredited dental schools in the United States and Canada found that only 2.3% of respondents strongly agreed that nurses and physicians in their health science center or academic campus were well educated about oral-systemic health [8]. The potential role of nurses in improving oral health outcomes across the life cycle and expanding access is contingent upon enhancing nursing curricula in undergraduate- and graduate-level programs and professional development programs for practicing nurses [1]. Abstract: gut morphology of two species of the neotropical genus tauritermes krishna was analyzed. detailed description of the coiling gut and the cuticular armature of the gizzard and first and second proctodeal segments of pseudergates are given. the characteristics of tauritermes gut followed the pattern previously known for the family, but some differences among this genus and other kalotermitidae genera were: the length of the midgut, the structure and cuticular ornamentation of the first and second proctodeal segments, the junction of the third and fourth proctodeal segments and the armature of the rectal valve. tauritermes was differentiated from other kalotermitidae genera by means of the gut characters, currently used in termite systematics and phylogeny.

Abstract: objective: to address aspects associated with the early detection and clinical management of oral disorders in breastfeeding. source of data: review of bibliographic sources (research articles, technical books, dissertations and national and international publications) focused on the clinical management of oral disorders in breastfed babies. summary of the findings: suction disorders may lead to inadequate actions that can compromise the mother/baby relation during breastfeeding. healthcare professionals may have an important role in these cases, as they can early detect such disorders. for that end, they must be able to assess breastfeeding and be prepared to manage oral disorders clinically. in the clinical management of babies with breastfeeding difficulties significant aspects of the oral physiology and breastfeeding observation should be considered. we stress the importance of an interdisciplinary team work and the need for oral training and specialized care in most complex cases. conclusion: the baby's oral disorders in breastfeeding can be corrected if they were early detected. healthcare professionals may help mothers and babies to overcome these problems if they have knowledge that enable them to perform right clinical procedures.

Abstract: human actions, including scientific research, are structured in individual and collective contexts. kent and santos's paper considered that in a particular scenario, but when they consider this fact they also give opportunity to interpretive actions. the most important is that the authors draw attention to emerging areas of the biological sciences, whose results could not only assist in understanding the dynamics involved in "doing science", but also as how human actions may be far from being understood only within a cultural-reductionist context. in this way, the authors introduce more elements to the debate on the need to persist, and the legitimacy of the barriers that separate biological anthropology, in which human genetics is inserted, and sociocultural anthropology.
