Abstract: the sequential extraction procedure proposed by tessier and total digestion were applied for the analysis of sediment samples from tubar?o river. the recoveries were between 93.5 and 102.5% for cu and 99.2 and 111% for pb. the precision was tipically better than 6% for cu and 3% for pb. comparison of the values obtained for the total digest with the sum of the extracted fractions showed that there were no significant losses in the extraction steps so that the method can be used for the monitoring availability and mobility of these analytes. according to ten points of sampling, was possible to determined the average of labiles phases (fractions 1 and 4) for pb and cu: 33.70% and 18.18%, respectively; and the inert phases (fraction 5- residual): 66.30% for pb and 81.82% for cu.

Abstract: the control of insects associated with home garden vegetable crops is usually done by sintetic pesticides. however, the risks of the indiscriminate use of pesticides on human health and the environment need to be considered. the objective of this work was to study the attractive efficacy of natural substances on d. speciosa, a very important pest in latin america. the following treatments were tested: roots of cayaponia sp., green fruits of lagenaria sp., water extract of brassica pekinensis, extract of fermented fruits, red vinegar and water as a control. the experimental design was randomized blocks with six replications. all the tested substances were put into pet plastic bottles of 2l with eight lateral holes and distributed at random in the experimental area. green fruits of lagenaria sp. captured the larger number of d. speciosa, 5.4 times more than roots of cayaponia sp. that captured 19.7 times more than the control tratament. the water extract of brassica pekinensis had no effect on d. speciosa attraction, and did not differ from the control treatment in the number of captured insects. independently of the treatment, the population peak of d. speciosa occurred in february and march.

Abstract: objective: to evaluate the impact of pelvic floor muscle (pfm) training on the quality of life (qol) in women with stress urinary incontinence (sui). methods: prospective clinical trial with 36 women with a diagnosis of sui confirmed by urodynamic study. women with neuromuscular diseases, using hormone replacement therapy, and with prolapse stage iii and iv were not included. the exercise protocol for the pfm consisted of slow contractions (tonic fibers), followed by rapid contractions (phasic fibers) practiced in the supine, sitting, and standing positions, three times a week for a period of three months. we evaluated the impact of pfm on qol using the king's health questionnaire (khq), a voiding diary, and digital palpation to assess the function of the pfms during the initial evaluation and after three months of treatment. the result was described as means and standard deviations. we used the wilcoxon test for comparison of the khq scores for paired samples, and the significance level was set at 0.05. results: there was a significant decrease in the mean scores of the domains assessed by the khq regarding the perception of health, impact of the incontinence, limitations of daily activities, physical limitations, social limitations, personal relationships, emotions, sleep/disposition, and measures of severity. in agreement with these results, significant decrease in nocturnal urinary frequency and urinary incontinence, as well as significant increase in muscle strength and endurance were observed. conclusion: pfm training resulted in significant improvement in the qol of women with sui.

Arquivos de Neuro-Psiquiatria , 1997, DOI: 10.1590/S0004-282X1997000300021
Abstract: two surgically removed meningotheliomatous meningiomas with hyaline inclusions or pseudopsammoma bodies were studied. both meningiomas showed expression of carcinoembryonic antigen and cytokeratin in the cells surrounding the hyaline bodies. there was widespread vimentin and epithelial membran antigen except in the cells with hyaline inclusions. clinically both had a severe cerebral edema. one of the cases showed multiple tumors, problably meningiomas. it is important not to misinterpret this variant of meningioma as metastatic neoplasm which may result in palliative treatment of a potentially curable tumor.
