Abstract: the objective of the present study was to investigate the procedure for the conducting the controlled deterioration test to evaluate the physiological quality of salad rocket (eruca sativa l.) seeds, cv. cultivada. two lots of salad rocket seeds were tested for germination, first germination count, seedling length, accelerated aging with and without the use of saturated nacl solution, field emergence and controlled deterioration. two temperatures (41 and 45oc) and two moisture contents (20 and 24%) were tested to obtain the best relationship between temperature and moisture content for use in the controlled deterioration test for salad rocket. the controlled deterioration test conducted at 41oc, for 20 and 24% and 24h was efficient in evaluating the physiological quality of salad rocket seeds, cv. cultivada.
Factors that affect cancer patient compliance to oral anti-neoplastic therapy
Marques, Patrícia Andréa Crippa;Pierin, Angela Maria Geraldo;
Acta Paulista de Enfermagem , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-21002008000200015
Abstract: objectives: to identify factors that can affect compliance to treatment with neoplastic oral drugs in a group of cancer patients. methods: interviews were performed on 61 patients diagnosed with cancer and under anti-neoplastic oral therapy in a private hospital. the interviews were carried out using instruments to assess compliance. results: most patients (95%) reported the oral treatment was not difficult. the morisky and green test were positive in 28% of the patients. factors that may affect following the treatment were significantly (p<0.05) associated with the time variable; patients who presented more difficulty had more treatment time. conclusions: patients presented positive attitudes toward the use of this anti-neoplastic oral treatment therapy, however 28% were considered non-compliant in the morisky and green test.

Abstract: rice is one of the most important and traditional cereal crops grown as it is a staple food of most of the world population. rio grande do sul state is an important rice producer, accounting for 50% of brazilian production, 80% of which is irrigated rice. the systemic insecticide thiamethoxam is transported within the plant and can activate various physiological processes, such as protein expression. these proteins interact with stress defense mechanisms, allowing the plant to better support adverse conditions such as drought, low ph, high soil salinity, free radical stress from high temperatures, toxic effects of high aluminium levels, pest damage, wind, hail, virus attack and nutrient deficiency. the aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of thiamethoxam on the physiological performance of rice seeds. seeds of the rice cultivars el paso, br irga 410, irga 424 and br olimar were treated with thiamethoxam concentrations of 0.0, 50, 100, 200, 400 ml per 100 kg of seeds. physiological seed quality was evaluated by tests of germination, first count germination, cold, accelerated aging and seedling shoot and root lengths. thiamethoxam treatment of rice seeds resulted in improved seed physiological quality with the dosage of 300 to 400 ml of product per 100 kg giving the best result.

Rigo, Lisandra N.;Pinto, Angela Maria;Denardin, Norimar D'Avila;Schneider, Ivo André H.;
Brazilian Journal of Microbiology , 2002, DOI: 10.1590/S1517-83822002000400010
Abstract: this work aimed to study, comparatively, the flocculation of fluorite particles with corynebacterium xerosis cells and three commercial long chain polymers. best flocculation results were obtained with cells of c. xerosis and with an anionic polyacrylamide. both were effective in solids removal and water clarification, although flocculation with c. xerosis cells requires a higher dosage of reagent per mass unit of processed ore.
Pré-germina??o de sementes de arroz de sequeiro
Franzin, Simone Medianeira;Menezes, Nilson Lemos de;Garcia, Danton Camacho;Tillmann, Maria Angela André;
Revista Brasileira de Sementes , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-31222007000100010
Abstract: pre-germination is a technique of seed physiological conditioning of seeds that is based on their controlled hydration, preparing them for germination and the initial development of the seedlings. the objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of the physiological conditioning, through the pre-germination at the temperatures of 20 and 25°c, with subsequent drying of the rice seeds cv. primavera. the seeds were submitted to immersion in water for periods of 8, 16, 24 and 32h, followed by 16, 24, 32 and 40h incubation. at the two temperatures, after conditioning, the germination tests and first count tests were applied. for the temperature of 25°c, in addition, initially, the imbibition curve was determined and, later, the cold test and the length and dried seedling mass tests were applied. at the temperature of 25°c, the treatment of 8 h of immersion and 16h of incubation presented humidity of 30.5%, considered enough for metabolic activation and presenting the best results detected in the vigor tests. it was concluded that the periods of 8 h immersion for16 h of incubation, at the temperature of 25°c and, 16 h of immersion for 24h of incubation, at the temperature of 20°c, are suitable for the pre-germination of upland rice seeds cv. primavera. the drying of the seeds, after the pre-germination, can be accomplished up to 17.0%, without damage to the physiological quality, however, the reduction of the water content to 13.0% annuls the benefits of the treatment, harming the seed vigor.

Hearing thresholds are not always predictive of performance in environments with reduced extrinsic redundancy. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the communication disorders reported by adults with normal hearing, and to assess their underlying conditions through behavioral and electrophysiological testing. METHOD: This case control study enrolled 20 adults with normal hearing thresholds and divided them into two groups: a case group with 10 adults with hearing impairment-related communication disorders and a control group with 10 adults with normal hearing. The frequency of occurrence of communication difficulties was recorded during speech recognition tests run in quiet and noisy conditions, audiometry, and auditory evoked brainstem potential testing. RESULTS: Case group subjects differed statistically from controls only in self-reported scores of hearing impairment. The groups did not differ in the other ratings. A positive correlation was found between hearing thresholds and scores on self-reported impairment. CONCLUSION: The combination of hearing complaints and unaltered audiograms was not correlated with differences in performance in speech recognition testing in noisy conditions or in the remaining evaluations. Correlation analysis sho
Tourism as an Exit Strategy at Crisis Times  [PDF]

Open Journal of Applied Sciences (OJAppS) , 2015, DOI: 10.4236/ojapps.2015.53009
Abstract: The contemporary crisis is giving evidence of failing macroeconomic theories and policies, after decades of focusing on the aggregate domestic demand and the role of the public expenditure. The contemporary crisis has shown the weakness of fiscal policy. With very low interest rates, the monetary policy does not seem to provide an alternative exit strategy out of the crisis, too. In this paper we discuss the hypothesis that GDP can still be a reliable estimate of growth. Nevertheless, at crisis times, only if the focus is on the foreign demand like International Tourism Receipts and Exports, and Exports can be an exit strategy. One component of Exports and International Tourism Receipts are worthy of attention. Thanks to a cluster analysis of per year variations of International Tourism Receipts (ITRs), GDP and Exports (World Bank Database) from 2007 to 2011, average positive variations of GDPs are matching with positive ITRs and Exports for “clusters” of countries. Performances of Europe and USA are worse than China, Brazil, India and South Africa and these continents and countries are separated in two different clusters. This result can be related to an increase of trade in emerging economies more than in mature ones, whose exit out of the crisis is much more demanding. The research confirms that Tourism and Exports are having an impact on the growth at different intensities (Europe and America vs. Asia) at crisis times.
