Abstract: in the paradigm of patient care that the recent brazilian psychiatric reform preconizes, the social reintegration of the patients suffering from mental illnesses is sought through open services (centers or nuclei of psychosocial support, known as caps or naps) in which an interaction with the patient's family is established, in order to foster a communication process that enables the mental health professional to understand the context of the patient's life history and, based on it, to develop educational efforts involving this group. this facilitates the patient's reintegration into the web of social relations that stigmatized him/her or from which he/she was excluded. this study investigates the social representations of the families of psychiatric patients as regards mental illness, relying on interviews and observation as data-collection tools, and was guided by the principles of qualitative research. through concrete experiences, the people investigated developed ideas that point to relationship difficulties with the bearer of mental illness. as a result, aggression, depreciation and abandonment arise within the family, all of which give rise to a need for support from healthcare services. the results attained may be useful as input to expansion projects of the mental healthcare network.

Baralhas, Marilisa;Pereira, Maria Alice Ornellas;
Physis: Revista de Saúde Coletiva , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-73312011000100003
Abstract: this study aimed to identify the representations developed by community health agents (cha) about their care practices. we used the qualitative research methodology, taking semistructured interviews for collecting data; for data interpretation, we adopted the thematic analysis. twelve cha of the community agents program (pacs) from a hinterland town in s?o paulo state. the material obtained presented two themes: the bond as working tool and practice based on health promotion and disease prevention. the reports show the importance of the bond in daily practice, emphasizing the humanitarian principles that underlie the actions of solidarity, highlight the feeling of gratification when the work performed is recognized by families and reveal that the interviewed ones have trouble in discerning the scope of its limits. although these professionals have a good technical support for the fulfillment of their actions, they also show the need for professional instrumentation. we conclude that the guidelines and standards set for the pacs function as guidelines for the health care process, but do not respond to more subjective issues found in the care of individual-family-community. moreover, the cha seem to be vulnerable to fluctuations in the municipal, state and federal administration, have inconsistent ideology in playing their own role and cannot reverse the health care model guided by disease and individual medical intervention.

Abstract: this study identifies how psychiatric patients perceive their families. we performed qualitative research, using open interview and life story narrative techniques. the data was analyzed using thematic analysis methodology, from which we identified two basic categories: affection and disaffection. feelings related to disaffection were more frequent, allowing us to infer that the subjects suffer from difficulties in family relationships. on the other hand, the meaning of the family and the expectations held are variable and specific to each person. the study suggests the need for forms of assistance that take into account the subjective domain, by considering the perception and expectations of the patient regarding his/her family, and then planning an adequate therapeutic strategy.

Pereira, Maria Alice Ornellas;Barbieri, Liliane;Paula, Virginia Praciano de;Franco, Melissa dos Santos Paschoalato;
Revista da Escola de Enfermagem da USP , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S0080-62342007000400005
Abstract: this study identified social representations of mental illness by community agents in a family health program unit. the authors chose the qualitative approach and used the case study methodology. data were collected by means of semi-structured interviews, with the use of projective and thematic analysis techniques. the results show social representations based on the traditional psychiatric paradigm, which considers the mentally ill as a passive person, without the necessary conditions to become the protagonist of his/her own history. this prejudice is typical of the traditional view. therefore, the authors suggest that a substantial effort should be made to provide a better professional formation to community agents in the family health program. such an effort would propitiate improvements on practices and the construction of new knowledge in the context of community mental health assistance.
