Abstract: this study aimed to know the ghq-12's construct validity in a general, non clinical population. 306 volunteers from different districts in joao pessoa, with a mean age of 34 years (sd = 13.8; ranging from 18 to 84), equally distributed with regards to gender (152 men; 154 woman), predominantly high school students (42.5%) participated in the study. they answered a questionnaire in which three measures were incorporated: satisfaction with life scale, positive and negative -affects scale, and general health questionnaire (ghq-12). results indicated that this measure can be considered as bifactorial, with anxiety (a = .66) and depression (a = .81) as the two factors. as expected, both factors correlated with the satisfaction with life scale and the positive and negative affects scale, indicating the construct validity of the ghq-12. these results are discussed and compared with results of previous studies suggesting a multidimensional structure for understanding mental health in the general population.

Abstract: obesity has become an epidemic that requires immediate control, mainly among the poor, particularly women and the less educated. the who requests and several studies confirm that support is needed for research projects examining psychological and social behavior that hampers compliance with weight loss diets. this paper uses the theory of reasoned action (tra) of m. fishbein (1975) in social psychology, comparing two series of open interviews (conducted in 2001 and 2005) that disclosed positive (advantageous) and negative (harmful) beliefs about weight loss diets among low-income obese patients in jo?o pessoa, paraíba state, as well as their guides (people of influential opinion) on following their diets. the 2001 findings were corroborated in 2005, revealing fears of diseases related to obesity and the wish to feel healthier and lighter. mothers, children and above all spouses were mentioned as diet supporters. it was stressed that will-power is not be enough, but also reflection and building up control skills, in addition to allocating and altering life styles. concerns related to appearance were not high priority. this information may lead to better diet compliance.

Abstract: the necessity of assessing the women's roles quality, such as paid worker and mother roles, led to the construction of scales that could measure them. considering the lack of adequate measures to assess these roles, the present research aimed to investigate the psychometric properties in brazilian samples of role quality scales developed in the usa by baruch and barnett (1986). the data consisted of 519 employed mothers who answered items about rewards and concerns relating to each role. a factor analysis using principal axis factoring was used to identify factors that could be used in further analyses. the results show reliable psychometric parameters in the assessment of role quality.

Abstract: this study aimed to: investigate yielding to the dependent variable "behavioral intent to become a regular blood donor", verify the impact of such communications on variance in the dependent variable, examine the single contribution of the external independent variable to the rational action theory, and test the fit of the expanded rational choice theory to the target behavior and sample. only a post-test design and double-blinded procedure were used, randomly picking 405 university students for experimental groups 1 and 2, placebo control, and control only. the results showed: lack of yielding by the experimental groups; considerable percentage variance in the dependent variable explained by the independent variable in the experimental and placebo control groups; and satisfactory and significant correlations for variables in the expanded theory. absence of yielding for the criterion variable was probably due to the time interval. the positive persuasive strategy accounted for the greatest variance in the dependent variable. moral obligation showed the greatest impact on participants' intent to perform the behavior. the correlations corroborated the theoretical and methodological validity of the expanded theory.

Abstract: it has been object of concern to the medical literature and, more recently, to psychology, the high prevalence of breast cancer in women. the early diagnosis helps to decrease the index, and among the methods for detection, the "breast self-examination" appears as a secondary prevention, secure and without costs. researches have shown, however, that the practice of breast self-examination is not satisfactory, mainly to women of a low schooling as well as a low social-economic level. according to the theory of reasoned action (tra), most of human behavior can be explained in terms of behavioral or normative beliefs. so, the present research aims to investigate the prominent modal beliefs of low income women, who lack clear information and effective health services, by using a sample of 40 women interviewed at a public hospital in jo?o pessoa (pb, northeast of brazil). the interviews contained items about the advantages and disadvantages of the breast self-examination, knowledge and sociodemographic data. the average age of the sample was 32,5 years (dp = 11,37). results indicate a total of 132 behavioral beliefs, which were classified into 9 dimensions and 166 normative beliefs, classified into 4 dimensions. these results demonstrate that beliefs do influence adherence to a practice of breast self-examination, and might make public prevention campaigns to turn their attention to these aspects, promoting not only the practice of breast self examination, but other preventive strategies for this significant portion of the population.

Abstract: the expansion of the pornographic material market raises the question of the influence of the values transmitted by the media in people's behavior. despite the apparent interest in sexuality by the society in general, brazil lacks studies on this topic, which has not yet been deeply discussed. this study describes the elaboration and validation of a psychometric instrument for the measuring of attitudes towards the consumption of pornographic material, answered by 336 university students and submitted to a factor analysis. 33 items were built in order to cover two dimensions, presenting adequate reliability scores: (1) "positive effects of pornography", expressing the idea that pornographic material is favorable to sexual life (a = 0.94) and (2) "harmful effects of pornography", which expresses the idea that this same material is noxious to intimate relationships and it is associated to vice and isolation (a = 0.85).
Psicologia e nutri??o: predizendo a inten??o comportamental de aderir a dietas de redu??o de peso entre obesos de baixa renda
Cavalcanti, Ana Paula Rodrigues;Dias, Mardonio Rique;Costa, Maria José de Carvalho;
Estudos de Psicologia (Natal) , 2005, DOI: 10.1590/S1413-294X2005000100014
Abstract: the present study was accomplished with 189 low income obese attended by public health nutritionists of jo?o pessoa, paraíba. we found out positive and negative beliefs plus the most expressive referees on these patients about the behavior of following a medical diet to reduce weight. this permitted to build a behavioral intention measurement instrument to check those who might really follow these diets. it was verified the emphasis on general normative and attitudinal aspects over obese who had up to one minimum-wage income. this may indicate two efficacious points to be explored on targeted communications to this social class during weight loss public health campaigns. this measurement can be turned into preventive health actions; obesity is considered worldwide as epidemics, in need of immediate control, growing in incidence mainly among lower ranks of the population of developing countries.

Abstract: based on the theory of reasoned action (tra) as a good resource to explain and predict a series of health-linked behaviors, it tried to investigate the people's intention, including people that had already suffered from a heart attack, in they practice walking, at least three times a week. for this, it was built, applied and validated an instrument composed of 22 items, in an amount of 302 people of the population in general to verify the intention of they exercise such behavior. the results demonstrated that the tra model is able to predict the quoted behavior. a multiple regression analyses explained 42% of the variance obtained from behavior intention, through general normative beliefs, attitude and general behavior beliefs, as decisive for the behavior of walking, at least three times a week. the variables of normative nature were the responsible for most of the explained variance, presenting, thus, its importance for interventions, seeking the adoption of the investigated behavior.

Abstract: this publication is part of a major study (thesis). in that thesis it was analyzed the intention of pronaf's beneficiaries to repay the credit they have received. the pronaf is a line of credit for small farmers implemented by the brazilian federal government in 1996. ajzen's theory of planned behavior (1991) was used to evaluate the beneficiaries' intention in paying what they owned. in order to accomplish this evaluation, two studies were conducted. the first one (preliminary study) focused on the small farmer's beliefs about the program operation. the second (main study) focused on the measurement of these beliefs. two beneficiary groups participated of the studies: group a (agrarian reform settlers) and group b (small farmers). according to ajzen's model, for the participants of the group a, the attitude, the normative belief (subjective norm component) and the subjective norm were positive significant predictors of the intention to repay the credit. for the group b, the attitude, behavioral belief (attitude component), normative belief (subjective norm component) and control belief (perceived behavioral control component) were positive significant predictors of the intention to repay the credit. the perceived behavioral control did not influence directly the behavioral intention, but this variable indirectly predicts the target behavior.
