Abstract: the mini-ixora (ixora coccinea 'compacta') is a species highly appreciated for use in tropical gardens. its propagation is made by cutting, however, its rooting percentage is very low so, the aim of this work was to evaluate substrates and environments for the mini-ixora rooting. apical cuttings with 10 cm of length were used in two substrates: sand and plantmax?. three rooting environments were used: wet chamber, greenhouse and conventional rooting (shade cloth with 50% of shade). the experiment was carried out by using split plots with three different environments in the main plot and two substrates in the subplots. one also used five replications and ten cuttings per plot. analyzing the results one hundred days after the experiment implantation one noticed that the sand had proportioned higher percentage of rooting (68%) compared to plantmax (48%). the wet chamber also was the environment that provided better conditions for the propagation of the mini-ixora, with the highest percentage of rooting, 98%, compared to the greenhouse, 66% and to the conventional rooting, 10%. moreover, sand and wet chamber also provided a better root quality. one concluded that the best substrate for mini-ixora propagation was sand and the cuttings should be placed in the wet chamber.

Abstract: the characteristics of the clones used in the cultivation of cassava vary according to the commercial suitability of the culture, that is, both for industrial processing and 'in natura' human consumption. this study aimed to identify new cassava clones obtained by crossbreeding at the federal university of lavras (ufla) in 1998, with respect to this suitability. to this end an attempt was made to identify clones with molecular patterns similar to those displayed by commercial clones. the methodology used for the extraction of dna and obtaining the banding patterns was the same as that recommended for the technique of microsatellite molecular markers. the molecular characterization of the cassava clones from ufla stock and of commercial clones showed a similarity of distribution concentrated in two groups. one group consists of clones for human consumption 'in natura' baiana, casca-roxa and iac 576-70, and of the stock clones ufla 7, ufla e, ufla 22 and ufla 55. the other group consists of clones for industrial processing fibra, iac 12, iac 13, iac 14 and iac 15, and of the stock clones ufla 20, ufla 33, ufla 36 and ufla 64. the commercial cultivar, ouro-do-vale, and the clones ufla 38 and ufla 69 fitted well into either group, whether for consumption or industrial use, while the p?o-da-china clone (for consumption) grouped together with the industrial clones. therefore the use of primers was sufficient to group those clones suitable for 'in natura' use but not those for industry.

Abstract: after 1831, the atlantic slave trade had to be carried out on the natural harbors of the brazilian coast, whose owners participated in local and provincial politics. during the "quinquênio liberal"(1844-48) - the party in power in pernambuco - sent the police to apprehend the cargo of slave ships consigned to their local political opponents. the repression against the slave trade was a political and economic instrument in the struggle against the conservative party, who armed itself against the praieira police, made up of planters who kept the captives for themselves.

Revista Brasileira de História , 2003, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-01882003000100009
Abstract: this article deals on the problems related to the involvement of subordinate sectors in the praiera insurrection (1848-49) and the street demonstrations that precede. it tries to appraise this participation and investigate the probable motivations. fifteen low and medium rank workers of the state apparatus and twenty-two craft workers were charged in the inquest. among them, there were "persuasive elements" that lead meetings in their shops. the boldest ones even shot at the imperial troops in the recife combat. the praieira serves as the angle to study the client's compliance to the ruling network and the forming of grassroot leaderships able to mediate the relationship between the haute politique and the immediate interests of free deprived urban workers.

Tourinho, Emmanuel Zagury;Carvalho Neto, Marcus Bentes de;Neno, Simone;
Estudos de Psicologia (Natal) , 2004, DOI: 10.1590/S1413-294X2004000100003
Abstract: the present article focuses an interpretation of psychology according to which philosophical/reflexive, empirical, and applied contents account for an original configuration of the discipline. the paper considers some historical facts that ground such configuration, which should be considered in order to achieve a better understanding of the heterogeneity of objects, methods, goals and philosophical commitments of the diverse psychological approaches. some implications of the model to an appreciation of (academic and non academic) doings in contemporary psychology are then discussed. it is argued that the success of each psychological approach depends, to a certain extent, on its recognition of the multifold character of the psychological field and its capacity to give consistent and integrated responses to the different social demands that give rise to the field.
