Arquivos de Neuro-Psiquiatria , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S0004-282X2007000300022
Abstract: the objective of the present study was to evaluate the cerebral blood flow in the cerebellar (4 sub-regions) and pre-frontal cortex, when subjects were in rest and during a motor task performance. the sample consisted of 8 healthy subjects, male or female, between 23 and 36 of age. the visuo-motor task _ implicit memory _ requires the subjects to navigate and swerve a graphic submarine from missiles that run on the screen. semi-quantitative analysis with brain spect (99mtc-ecd) was used to evaluate regional perfusion. the results revealed an increased activity in all areas of interest during motor task. in conclusion, four sub-regions of cerebellar cortex and both pre-frontal hemispheres showed a simultaneous activation during task. moreover, our findings suggest as seen in previous experiments that the central nervous system operates in a parallel fashion, in order to integrate sensory and motor information.

Abstract: based on a demographic perspective, this article presents a discussion on important issues for analyses of migration and urbanization, considering the existent advances and gaps and, especially, the analytic possibilities propitiated by creative use of the most recent brazilian demographic censuses. the article is intended as a contribution not only to a broadening of the agenda for research, but also to theoretical and methodological discussions on the phenomena in question.
Dinamica migratória e o processo de ocupa??o do Centro-Oeste brasileiro: o caso de Mato Grosso
Cunha, José Marcos Pinto da;
Revista Brasileira de Estudos de Popula??o , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-30982006000100006
Abstract: the state of mato grosso is one of the last frontier areas in brazil, and still shows some potential for populations that continue to seek alternatives for migration. concurrently with the process of "urbanization of the frontier," one can see other phenomena in the state that are having strong impacts on the opening up of new possibilities for realigning the population in the territory, such as small farm settlements and new pioneering projects, which would have positive impacts for the continued demographic occupation of the state. after having gone through an intense process of occupation until the mid-1980s, mato grosso's demographic growth slowed down considerably. at the same time, however, it also continued to show relative dynamism in general. the present article is based on analyses of data from the demographic and agricultural censuses and from interviews held in mato grosso, and analyzes migratory trends in the state and their impacts on the process of occupation of the state in recent years. special emphasis is given to the behavior of several areas that are representative of the most important processes now underway. the author also seeks to locate these processes of change in the patterns of economic occupation. the analyses show strong association between the two phenomena, namely, on the one hand, the impact of extensive land-use activities such as cattle raising, soybeans, and cotton in reducing the possibilities for absorbing migrants in the rural areas and, on the other, the "compensating" effects of land reform settlements.
EST?O AS BIBLIOTECAS UNIVERSITáRIAS BRASILEIRAS ADEQUADAS AO ENSINO E à PESQUISA EM ECOLOGIA?
Pinto-Coelho, Ricardo M.;Barbeitos, Marcos;
Ciência da Informa??o , 1997, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-19651997000100004
Abstract: this contribution aimed at verifying if selected libraries from major brazilian universites are prepared to meet the increasing demand on ecological research and teaching that has been observed in the country during recent years. the methodology consisted in investigating and comparing percentuals of coverage in journal collections from each library, considering one key topic in ecology: secondary production. only the universidade de s?o paulo (usp) has the capability to cover satisfactorily most selected references. a second group consisting of other universities in s?o paulo sate and the federal university of rio de janeiro has collections covering 40-60% of all references. a third, and the largest, group of universities has poorer collections covering always less than 40% of all selected references. despite being ranked in this third group, some large universities, like the university of brasília or the federal university of minas gerais, have a long tradition in ecological research as well as some of the country's most important graduate programmes on ecology
Ownership Concentration, Top Management and Board Compensation
Marcos Barbosa Pinto,Ricardo Pereira Camara Leal
Revista de Administra??o Contemporanea , 2013,
Abstract: The degree of ownership concentration may influence executive and board compensation (Bebchuk & Fried, 2003). This article analyzes this relationship. Detailed information about top management and board compensation became available starting in 2010 through new Securities Commission filings. Linear regression models applied to a sample of 315 Brazilian companies traded on the national exchange indicate a negative and statistically significant economic correlation between executive compensation and the degree of ownership concentration. Ceteris paribus, companies with a lower degree of ownership concentration pay higher compensation to top executives. Family controlled companies pay more to their chief executive, but not to the managerial team as a whole, and the compensation of directors increases with a greater proportion of control group members or their relatives on the board. There was support for the Managerial Power Hypothesis in companies with a lower degree of ownership concentration and for the extraction of private benefits in companies where it is greater.

Abstract:

Sugarcane mosaic caused by Sugarcane Mosaic Virus (SCMV) is one of the most important virus diseases of sugarcane. In the present study, changes in the transcription profile obtained by cDNA-AFLP analysis were investigated in two sugarcane varieties contrasting to SCMV resistance, when challenged with a severe virus strain. Healthy plants derived from meristem tip tissue culture were mechanically inoculated under greenhouse controlled conditions and sampled at 24, 48 and 72 hours after inoculation. A total of 392 transcript-derived fragments (TDFs) were verified in the resistant variety against 380 in the susceptible one. The two sugarcane genotypes showed differential behavior in the number of induced and repressed TDFs along the time-course samplings. Ten out of 23 sequenced TDFs (unique from the resistance variety), showed identity with known plant sequences, mostly related to plant defense mechanisms against pathogens. The cDNA-AFLP technique was effective in revealing changes in the transcription profile within and between contrasting varieties when challenged by SCMV.

Abstract:

The regime of disturbance with natural or anthropogenic origin can lead to the destabilization or even to a mass mortality of benthic communities. Due to the heterogeneity of the disturbance there is a formation of patches in different stages of ecological succession. The aim of this study is to follow and describe the resilience in artificial disturbed sediment in a polluted bay in Rio de Janeiro. The sediment was collected, sterilized and placed inside corers (10 cmdiameter ×15 cmheight) in the same place where it was collected. We allocated the samples in two structures, the difference between them was that one was placed closed to the bottom and the other was placed50 cmheight. We found 2352 organisms distributed in 14 taxons. The class Polychaeta and the order Amphipoda showed the highest density in all the survey and treatments. We identified the factors influencing the scenarium: different mechanisms of dispersal, the position of the structures and life history of each group. Disturbance can be the main cause of the patch’s diversity found in estuaries and coastal areas. Because of this, monitoring of selected areas becomes an important tool to understand the regime of disturbance as a key factor structuring benthic communities in soft sediment, also suggesting a metapopulation dynamics.

Influência da idade da fêmea na performance reprodutiva e longevidade de Argyrotaenia sphaleropa (Lepidoptera, Tortricidae)
Pinto, ?ngelo P.;Sant'Ana, Josué;Botton, Marcos;
Iheringia. Série Zoologia , 2005, DOI: 10.1590/S0073-47212005000400015
Abstract: argyrotaenia sphaleropa (meyrick, 1909) is a generalist pest in south american orchards. the effect of female age on the reproductive performance and longevity was investigated under laboratory conditions. 1, 3, 5 and 8-day-old virgin females were paired with 0-3-day-old virgin males. the longevity, mating success, oviposition pattern, fecundity and fertility were verified daily. delayed female mating had no influence on oviposition period and longevity, however it affected mating success, pre-oviposition period, fecundity and fertility. the percentage of mating was 25% inferior in 8-day-old females, compared to females paired within 1 day after emergence. the highest fecundity was obtained from mating of 1-day-old female. fertility in 3, 5 and 8-day-old mated females was reduced to 57, 82 and 99%, respectively. the implications of these findings in the control strategies of a. sphaleropa are discussed.
