Efeito da aplica??o de vibra??o mecanica sobre a impuls?o vertical

Abstract: several studies have indicated that vibratory training can contribute to the development of muscle strength and sports performance. the aim of this study was to investigate the effect of mechanical vibration application in the direction of the result of muscle forces vector addition on vertical jump. eighteen volunteers performed vertical jump test 20 s before and after the application of mechanical vibration of 20 hz and 6 mm amplitude in the direction of the result of muscle forces vector addition. the same volunteers were used as control group by performing the vertical jump test without pre- and post-test vibration application. the vibratory training caused an significantly increase of 8,5% at vertical jump height while jump height did not vary significantly in the control experiment. these data suggest that the application of mechanical vibration in the direction of muscle forces vector addition can increase the performance in vertical jumps.
Is there correlation between the turbulent eddies size and mechanical hemolysis ?

Abstract: hemolytic profile of an artificial device chronically implanted in the cardiovascular system may represent the difference between the success and failure in its long-term performance. last decades have witnessed efforts on the development of methods capable of predicting red blood cell damage in artificial organs. however, all of them have had limited success to predict hemolysis. the primary cause of this problem is that such models do not take into consideration structures of turbulent flow. the present paper demonstrates that microscopic measurable occurrences of the turbulent flow may be linked to red blood cell trauma. this study suggests that if the smallest turbulent eddies dimension is under 10 m m hemolysis is not dependent on the exposure time and the red blood cells damage depends only on the dissipation of the turbulent energy in the erythrocyte membrane. the analysis reported here opens the possibility of mapping the flow field in artificial assist devices based on the smallest eddy length scales. this is a promising new trend and should be considered in the designing requirements of the next generations of artificial organs.

Abstract: this piece focuses on plato?s criticism of orators, poets and sophists. its purpose is to show that independently of the characteristics that singularize a battle of a great impact, fought by the philosopher in three different fronts, the notion of imitation (mímesis) provides a guiding thread that enables bringing together these three fights and throwing light on plato?s reaction to those whom he considers, despisingly, as imitators. the adulatory practice of the orator in gorgias, no less than the work of the poet that is deeply questioned in the republic and that of the sophist in the homonymous dialogue would have, in effect, a mimetical nature. this is not an impediment to recognize, besides the continuity aspects, significant differences in the treatments of mimesis that the three dialogues here considered offer.
Critical flow regions in tissue artificial heart valve assessed by laser doppler anemometer in continuous flow

Abstract: flow diagnosis using non-invasive techniques such laser doppler anemometer (lda) is an important tool to improve the design of artificial heart valves. in the present study, an experimental protocol to obtain flow velocity field and colour coded maps of turbulent eddies dimensions using lda measurements in a 25 mm bovine pericardium bio prosthesis valve is reported. a transparent plexiglas chamber was specially designed to allow optical access to the flow passing through the valve. experiments were conducted for non-pulsate flow (to study the valve performance in the peak flow) for the aorta reynolds number ranging from 3300 to 6800. lda interrogation volume visited five thousand and one hundred points along the flow (2500 points upstream and 2600 points downstream) for each reynolds number. post-processing methodology was employed to obtain haemolytic potential colour-coded maps, which were related to turbulent quantities. it was observed that haemolytic regions tend to move downstream the valve when the flow rate is increased.

Influência da preserva o de pele em cirurgia conservadora por cancer de mama sobre as taxas de recorrência local e a distancia

Abstract: OBJETIVO: avaliar a taxa de recorrência local, regional e a distancia de nova técnica cirúrgica para tratamento conservador do cancer de mama de estádio inicial. A técnica é baseada na ressec o segmentar com dissec o axilar e preserva o de pele por incis o periareolar única. MéTODOS: cento e dezenove pacientes com cancer de mama de estádio I e II foram incluídas neste estudo. O grupo estudo foi constituído por 57 pacientes que se submeteram à cirurgia pela técnica proposta e 62 pacientes submetidas a quadrantectomia clássica constituíram o grupo controle. A radioterapia pós-operatória e o boost foram realizados em ambos os grupos. A média de seguimento foi de 50,1 meses para o grupo estudo e 51,2 para o grupo controle. As taxas de recidiva, sobrevida global e sobrevida livre de doen a foram analisadas e comparadas entre os dois grupos. RESULTADOS: a taxa de recidiva local no período foi de 3,5% para o grupo estudo e 4,8% para o grupo controle. N o houve diferen a significativa entre os grupos nas taxas de sobrevida livre de doen a e sobrevida global. CONCLUS ES: a técnica de ressec o segmentar com dissec o axilar por incis o única periareolar, preservando pele, n o mostrou diferen a, em rela o à quadrantectomia clássica, nas taxas de recidiva, sobrevida global e sobrevida livre de doen a.
Valida??o do reprocessamento de cateteres cardíacos angiográficos: uma avalia??o da funcionalidade e da integridade

Abstract: the objective of this study was to validate the reprocessing of angiographic cardiac catheters regarding their characteristics of mechanical functionality and the molecular and micro-structural integrity of the polymeric chain. this is an experimental, applied, comparative and controlled study. a simulation set was built for a left coronary angiography in order to simulate mechanical and biological stress in the catheters. traction tests were performed for the functionality and the integrity was tested through infrared spectrometry and scanning electronic microscopy. the study evidenced a tendency to an increase in rigidity at every increment of the reprocessing number (p<0.05). the changes in the mechanical properties and molecular structures of the polymers were more evident as of the fifth reprocessing. micrographies revealed an increase in rugosity as of the forth reprocessing. the results of this study may contribute to the elaboration of reprocessing protocols and a systematic surveillance of the reutilization of single use materials, not only due to their economical relevance, but especially from the ethical, legal, biological, functional and care point of view.
Influência da preserva??o de pele em cirurgia conservadora por cancer de mama sobre as taxas de recorrência local e a distancia

Abstract: purpose: to evaluate the local, regional and distant recurrence rate of a new surgical technique for the conservative treatment of the breast cancer in early stages. the technique is based on breast segmental resection with axillary dissection and skin sparing by a single periareolar incision. methods: one hundred and nineteen patients with breast cancer stages i and ii constituted the present study. the study group comprised fifty-seven patients who were submitted to surgery by the proposed technique, while 62 patients submitted to the classic quadrantectomy constituted the control group. postoperative radiotherapy and boost were perfomed in both groups. the average follow-up was 50.1 months for the study group and 51.2 months for the control group. the rates of recurrence, global survival and disease-free survival were analyzed and compared between the two groups. results: the rate of local recurrence in the period was 3.5% for the study group and 4.8% for the control group. there was no statistically significant difference between the groups as to disease-free survival and global survival rates. conclusion: we demonstrated that the technique of segmental resection with axillary dissection by a single periareolar incision, preserving skin, did not show difference in relation to the classic quadrantectomy, regarding rates of recurrence, global survival and disease-free survival.

Abstract: objective: to report on an improved model of intraluminal sutureless prosthesis for partial aortic replacement. method: a grooved multidrilled plastic ring was employed to facilitate the intraoperative handcrafting of the vascular prosthesis and its sutureless intraluminal fixation to the aorta. a 42 years old male patient with type a dissecting aneurysm was treated by the bentall - de bono technique using a valved and ringed bovine vascular prosthesis which was implanted in the aortic annulus with interrupted sutures and tied distally inside the aorta. results: the improved ringed vascular prosthesis simplified the sutureless intraluminal anastomosis procedure. the postoperative evolution was uneventfull and the patient remains asymptomatic one year after the operation. conclusion: the improved ringed vascular prosthesis simplified the intraluminal sutureless procedure for treatment of dissecting aneurysm of the aorta.
