Open Journal of Genetics (OJGen) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/ojgen.2014.41006
Abstract:

One of the major causes of congenital hypophosphatemic rickets is the X-linked hypophosphatemic rickets (XHR), due to a defect on PHEX gene. The XHR increases the renal elimination of phosphate, that condition leads a defective mineralization of bones and also affects the growth in children. Clinical diagnosis should be suspected in children with signs of rickets and hypophosphatemia with normal calcium levels. We describe clinical characteristics and genetic results of four patients diagnosed and treated in our Nephrology Section. All patients have a de novo XHR as none familiars are affected. Early diagnosis should be suspected before the bone deformities have been submitted and the growth would have been impaired.

Depths of Powers of the Edge Ideal of a Tree
Susan Morey
Mathematics , 2009,
Abstract: Lower bounds are given for the depths of R/I^t for t at least one when I is the edge ideal of a tree or forest. The bounds are given in terms of the diameter of the tree, or in case of a forest, the largest diameter of a connected component and the number of connected components. These lower bounds provide a lower bound on the power for which the depths stabilize.
Cutaneous Manifestations of Sickle Cell Disease  [PDF]
Heather Jones, Morey Blinder, Milan Anadkat
Open Journal of Blood Diseases (OJBD) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/ojbd.2013.33019
Abstract: Sickle cell disease is an inherited erythrocyte disorder affecting multiple organ systems. As individuals are living well into middle age due to advances in diagnosis and treatment, further disease-related complications are being recognized. This article reviews the cutaneous manifestations of sickle cell disease including leg ulcers and acquired pseudoxanthoma elasticum.
Confidence Intervals from Normalized Data: A correction to Cousineau (2005)
Richard D. Morey
Tutorials in Quantitative Methods for Psychology , 2008,
Abstract: Presenting confidence intervals around means is a common method of expressing uncertainty in data. Loftus and Masson (1994) describe confidence intervals for means in within-subjects designs. These confidence intervals are based on the ANOVA mean squared error. Cousineau (2005) presents an alternative to the Loftus and Masson method, but his method produces confidence intervals that are smaller than those of Loftus and Masson. I show why this is the case and offer a simple correction that makes the expected size of Cousineau confidence intervals the same as that of Loftus and Masson confidence intervals.
Health information ties: preliminary findings on the health information seeking behaviour of an African-American community
Ophelia T. Morey
Information Research: an international electronic journal , 2007,
Abstract: Introduction. The purpose of this study is to explore the health information seeking behaviour of African-Americans using Granovetter's strength of weak ties as the theoretical framework. Method. A listed household (LHH) telephone survey of 216 residents who reside on the Near East Side of Buffalo, New York. Using the Rand() feature in MS Excel a random sample was drawn from the LHH telephone numbers that were randomly selected from census tracts covering the target area in Buffalo, New York. Random samples were drawn three times until at least 200 telephone surveys were completed. Analysis. Data analysis was completed using SPSS 13.0 for Windows. Both bivariate and multivariate analyses were performed along with analyzing descriptive statistics and chi-square to determine the association between the source of health information as related to demographics and tie strength between individuals. Results. Overall, most respondents rely on a health service professional for health information (45.5%) followed by a web site (14.1%). Respondents reported having a 'somewhat close' (significant tie) relationship with health care professionals as compared to having a 'very close' (core tie) relationship with family members. The importance of health service professionals as a significant or weak tie in health information seeking is consistent with the strength of weak ties theory. Results on proxy searching behaviour or searching on behalf of another person are also examined. Most respondents sought information for themselves (76.2%), although 22.2 percent sought health information on behalf of another person. Conclusion. : These findings confirm the important role of health service professionals (weak tie) in health information seeking by underserved populations and suggest the need for investigation on the information giving behaviour of these professionals. These findings also demonstrate the need for further research on strong ties or close family and friends as a source of health information and in particular their role in proxy health information behaviour.
Minimal Reductions and Cores of Edge Ideals
Louiza Fouli,Susan Morey
Mathematics , 2010,
Abstract: We study minimal reductions of edge ideals of graphs and determine restrictions on the coefficients of the generators of these minimal reductions. We prove that when $I$ is not basic, then $\core{I}\subset \m I$, where $I$ is an edge ideal in the corresponding localized polynomial ring and $\m$ is the maximal ideal of this ring. We show that the inclusion is an equality for the edge ideal of an even cycle with an arbitrary number of whiskers. Moreover, we show that the core is obtained as a finite intersection of homogeneous minimal reductions in the case of even cycles. The formula for the core does not hold in general for the edge ideal of any graph and we provide a counterexample. In particular, we show in this example that the core is not obtained as a finite intersection of general minimal reductions.
A Lower Bound For Depths of Powers of Edge Ideals
Louiza Fouli,Susan Morey
Mathematics , 2014,
Abstract: Let $G$ be a graph and let $I$ be the edge ideal of $G$. Our main results in this article provide lower bounds for the depth of the first three powers of $I$ in terms of the diameter of $G$. More precisely, we show that $\depth R/I^t \geq \left\lceil{\frac{d-4t+5}{3}} \right\rceil +p-1$, where $d$ is the diameter of $G$, $p$ is the number of connected components of $G$ and $1 \leq t \leq 3$. For general powers of edge ideals we show
The Demoiselle of X-Inactivation: 50 Years Old and As Trendy and Mesmerising As Ever
Céline Morey ,Philip Avner
PLOS Genetics , 2011, DOI: 10.1371/journal.pgen.1002212
Abstract: In humans, sexual dimorphism is associated with the presence of two X chromosomes in the female, whereas males possess only one X and a small and largely degenerate Y chromosome. How do men cope with having only a single X chromosome given that virtually all other chromosomal monosomies are lethal? Ironically, or even typically many might say, women and more generally female mammals contribute most to the job by shutting down one of their two X chromosomes at random. This phenomenon, called X-inactivation, was originally described some 50 years ago by Mary Lyon and has captivated an increasing number of scientists ever since. The fascination arose in part from the realisation that the inactive X corresponded to a dense heterochromatin mass called the “Barr body” whose number varied with the number of Xs within the nucleus and from the many intellectual questions that this raised: How does the cell count the X chromosomes in the nucleus and inactivate all Xs except one? What kind of molecular mechanisms are able to trigger such a profound, chromosome-wide metamorphosis? When is X-inactivation initiated? How is it transmitted to daughter cells and how is it reset during gametogenesis? This review retraces some of the crucial findings, which have led to our current understanding of a biological process that was initially considered as an exception completely distinct from conventional regulatory systems but is now viewed as a paradigm “par excellence” for epigenetic regulation.

Cuadernos de antropolog?-a social , 2005,
Abstract: this article is meant to analyze the relationship between domestic production and marketing in the mapuche community located in huiliches (province of neuquén). we will specifically concentrate on craft production and marketing, as it constitutes an increasingly important factor in the mapuche economy. we will also account for the structural aspects concerning de development of this activity, among which we could mention tourism, underemployment, the search for alternative income, and different governmental and ngo′s policies. owing to the fact that in the past years, there have been limitations in cattle rearing and lack of employment in these communities, we will be able to relate the increasing importance of craft production with the sources of income already mentioned.
This article is meant to analyze the relationship between domestic production and marketing in the Mapuche community located in Huiliches (Province of Neuquén).
