Abstract: the objective of this work was to study different competition covariates in neighborhood analysis and to check the efficiency of this analysis in the increase of the experimental precision and the consequences in the ranking of sugarcane genotypes in terms of productive potential. data used were from the state experimental network of the sugarcane breeding program installed in 2002, of the instituto agron?mico, campinas, sp, brazil. the experimental design was in randomized complete blocks, with three replicates. the plots were formed of five 8 m rows with 1.5-m spacing between rows. the stalk productivity (tch, mg ha-1) was evaluated in the first and third harvests. the covariates "side", "tip" and "4 neighbors" were included in the papadakis method and in two variations of the moving average method. the papadakis and moving average 1 methods did not change the experimental precision in comparison with traditional analysis. the moving average 2 method reduced the environmental variance. however, it changed the estimates of the genetic variance and the genotype ranking, and could lead to erroneous conclusions in the selection. although the "side" covariate was influential on competition, its effect or on five row-plots was small.

Abstract: The study investigates the effect of spatial and temporal tree-fall gaps structure on spiders’ assemblage in an Atlantic forest fragmented area in Brazil. It was conducted in the Michelin Ecological Preserve-REM (Bahia), 190 ha forest remnant. Samples were collected on leaf-litter (50 × 50 cm) at five tree-fall gaps formations (<150 m2), within five adjacent primary forest and five inner edge parcels. During 16 months (between May 2009 and October 2012), 480 m2 leaf-litter samples were collected, from which spiders were extracted using mini-Winkler traps. The observed and estimated richness of spider’s species was higher at the edge (p < 0.01). The habitat structures differ significantly among the three habitat types (MRPP, p < 0.01) and also during the tree-fall gaps aging gradient (MRBP, p < 0.01). There were significant differences on spiders’ species composition, comparing the three habitats (MRPP, p < 0.05). The composition of spider’s species changed as tree-fall gaps aged (MRBP, p < 0.05). We argue that the tree-fall gaps play, on a local scale, an important role in acting on the time-space distribution dynamics of spider’s species assemblages, although the time effect should still be evaluated.

Abstract: water deficit is one of the major factors limiting the production of sugarcane, especially in areas where there is a prolonged period of water deficiency, such as the west central brazilian region. one way to overcome this problem is to cultivate resistant or tolerant varieties. an experiment was set up at the jalles machado sugar mill, located near goianésia, goiás state, brazil, to evaluate agronomic performance of several sugarcane families. a comparative analysis was carried out among the families under two irrigation regimes, one under regular environmental conditions and another under monthly irrigations during the period of water deficiency. evaluated families consisted of 25 progenies planted in a factorial design with three replications with 20 plants each. the first ratoon crop was evaluated for four yield components, stalk height, stalk diameter, stalk number and brix. by analysis of variance, stalk number and stalk height were influenced by water stress conditions during the initial growth phase, and for stalk diameter and brix, water regime had no effect on the average expression of the characters during the growth phase. the method of classification in four categories proved to be adequate. some families had high values for stalk diameter, stalk number and stalk height under water stress conditions. this study showed that it is possible to select sugarcane families under water deficit conditions associated with higher stalk diameter, stalk number and stalk height.

Abstract: ten sugarcane clones obtained from crossings carried out in 1985 in camamu, state of bahia, were evaluated in a trial in the jaú region, state of s?o paulo, brazil. the trial started in february, 1991 and used a complete randomized block design with six replications. statistical analyses for cane and sugar yield (t/ha) and sugar content (pol % cane) were performed with four harvest means. data on number of stalks, stalk weight, yield decline index, fiber % cane and flowering intensity, are also shown. according to these characteristics compared to two varieties used as control, sp70-1143 and sp71-1406, the clone iac85-3229 showed good potential with possibility of inclusion in varietal management studies for other regions of the state of s?o paulo.

Scientia Agricola , 2003,
Abstract: In spite of the great homogeneity found in the morphological characteristics of Oxisols, there is great chemical diversity in subsurface layers of these soils. Studies indicate that crop yield presents significant correlation with the chemical attributes of the subsurface, which, are more stable than attributes found in the plough layer, subject to greater alterations as a consequence of agricultural exploration. This work evaluated the effects of subsurface chemical attributes of Oxisols of the South Central region of Brazil, on the yield of sugarcane clones and of variety RB72454, during the first, second and third cropping cycles. Productivity data were obtained between 1993 and 1998. Soils were characterized in terms of their mechanical analysis and chemical traits at 0.8 to 1.0 m; correlation studies between these attributes and mean daily productivity as well as multiple regression analysis were also carried out; variables were selected based on their R2 values by means of the stepwise procedure. The subsurface chemical traits of the Oxisols influenced sugarcane productivity, especially the 3rd harvest; the clone productivity model for the 3rd harvest as a function of base saturation and phosphorus content presented R2 = 0.31, i.e., 31% of the variation in sugarcane yield (t ha-1 day-1) can be explained by these two attributes. For variety RB72454, 47% of that variation is explained by the sum of bases and contents of calcium and organic matter. Variations on productivity at 1st and 2nd harvests can be better explained by pHwater.
