Arquivos Brasileiros de Cardiologia , 2000,
Abstract: Coronary dissection occurs frequently and in several degrees during coronary angioplasty, which is one of the mechanisms for increasing the lumen diameter of a vessel. However the length of the dissection may affect the procedure, becoming the most frequent cause of total occlusion after coronary angioplasty. We report here a case of extensive dissection that occurred during the coronary angioplasty of a focused lesion, which we treated with two long stents.

Journal of the Brazilian Chemical Society , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-50532006000800028
Abstract: the synthesis and characterization of a new polymeric material composed of poly-{trans-[rucl2(vpy)4 ]-styrene-4-vinylpyridine} impregnated with silver nanoparticles are here described. this material was obtained by a non aqueous polymerization reaction involving trans-[rucl2(vpy)4], styrene (sty) and 4-vinylpyridine (4-vpy), using benzoyl peroxide as initiator. the silver particles nanometric dimensions were confirmed by transmission electron microscopy (tem) and uv-visible spectroscopy. the terpolymer morphology was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (sem). thermal properties were analyzed by thermal gravimetric analysis (tga) and differential scanning calorimetry (dsc). the antimicrobial action of the polymer impregnated with silver nanoparticles was evaluated by the use of gram positive and gram negative microorganisms, staphylococcus aureus (atcc 25923) and escherichia coli (atcc 25922), respectively. the antimicrobial activity of the terpolymer with silver nanoparticles was confirmed by the presence of a bacterial growth inhibition halo in seeded culture media.

Abstract: objective: to review radiographic aspects of idiopathic congenital clubfeet operated on and compare them to the surgical results achieved. methods: the sample include 68 congenital clubfeet that were operated on with posteromedial, and/or lateral release of the soft parts. the age at the time of surgery varied from 6 to 24 months, and post-operative follow-up lasted from 1 to 16 years, with a mean of 4.87 years. at the time of evaluating results, anteroposterior and profile x-rays with charge were made of the feet, and the talus-calcaneus, talus-first metatarsus, and calcaneus-fifth metatarsus angles were plotted. a review was also made of the percentage movement backwards of the fibula onto the tibia, and the relation of the tibia and the navicular position in relation to the talus in both radiographic plans. results: 90.8% satisfactory results and 9.2% unsatisfactory results were obtained. the mean talus-calcaneus angle in the anteroposterior x-ray was 23.20o, and it was 23.20o in the profile x-ray, with no statistical significance. the talus-first metatarsus angle presented a mean of 4.84o, and the calcaneus-fifth metatarsus angle had a mean of 7.70o, both correlating to the results (p = 0.003). the percentage movement backwards of the fibula onto the tibia had a mean value of 60.67% (p = 0.007). conclusions: 1o) when they were wider than 10o and 12o, the respective angles of the talus-first metatarsus in the anteroposterior x-rays, and of the calcaneus-fifth metatarsus in anteroposterior x-rays were significant for those clubfeet that had unsatisfactory results; 2o) the better the navicular alignment in relation to the talus in anteroposterior x-rays and in profile x-rays, the better the results; 3o) the percent relation of the backwards movement of the fibula onto the tibial was higher in those feet with unsatisfactory results; 4o) in anteroposterior and in profile x-rays, the talus-calcaneus angle did not show to be a good parameter to evaluate the results of
In vitro effect of silver nanoparticles on creatine kinase activity

Abstract: one of the most prominent nanoproducts is the silver nanoparticle (agn), since silver ions exhibit remarkably unusual physical, chemical and biological properties. creatine kinase (ck) plays a central role in metabolism of high-energy consuming tissues such as brain, skeletal muscle and heart, where it functions as an effective buffering system of cellular atp levels. a decrease of ck activity may impair energy homeostasis, contributing to cell death. in the present work we studied the in vitro effect of agn on the activity of ck from rat brain, heart and skeletal muscle. our results demonstrated that agn (10, 25 and 50 mg l-1) in vitro inhibited ck from brain and skeletal muscle, but not from heart. several works showed that agn cytotoxic effects probably involve interaction between silver ions and sulphydryl groups of proteins. we suggest that agn inhibited ck activity through interactions with thiol groups of the enzyme.

Abstract: we detected toxoplasma gondii oocysts in feces of experimentally infected cats, using a kato katz approach with subsequent kinyoun staining. animals serologically negative to t. gondii were infected orally with 5x102 mice brain cysts of me49 strain. feces were collected daily from the 3rd to the 30th day after challenge. oocysts were detected by qualitative sugar flotation and the quantitative modified kato katz stained by kinyoun (kkk). in the experimentally infected cats, oocysts were detected from the 7th to 15th day through sugar flotation technique, but oocysts were found in kkk from the 6th to 16th day, being sensitive for a larger period, with permanent documentation. the peak of oocysts excretion occurred between the 8th to 11th days after challenge, before any serological positive result. kkk could be used in the screening and quantification of oocysts excretion in feces of suspected animals, with reduced handling of infective material, decreasing the possibility of environmental and operator contamination.
