Abstract: the objective of this study was to identify the origin of the knowledge and practices regarding the therapeutic use of medicinal plants, by individuals living in a community in the central region of rio grande do sul, brazil. this is a qualitative study, in which the data collection was performed through semi-structured interviews and participant observation. the participants were selected through their own relationship network. a thematic analysis of the data was performed. it was found that the participants learn how to use and manage medicinal plants in their family context; it is highlighted that women have a strong influence on the transmission of this particular knowledge; they usually obtain the plants at their own homes; and most plants that are used also have their indication supported by scientific evidence. it is believed that the present study is important for nurses and the society as a whole, as it points to the need for an approximation between popular and scientific knowledge, as well as the need to invest in projects that address this particular topic.
Modelling Visible Foliar Injury Effects on Canopy Photosynthesis and Potential Crop Yield Losses Resulting from Fluoride Exposure  [PDF]

Journal of Environmental Protection (JEP) , 2012, DOI: 10.4236/jep.2012.39113
Abstract: Crop production models are highly developed to account for different nitrogen, light, temperature and water availability conditions and, in some species, disease or air pollutant effects. There is very limited knowledge on responses of many tropical crops, such as oil palm (Elaeis guineensis), to air pollutants although predictions of these effects are essential for industrial planning in several countries. In the absence of limitations due to water supply, the effects of leaf area loss due to necrosis and chlorosis are much more important to canopy photosynthesis than are changes in the physiological attributes that influence the efficiency of light use. Therefore, potential losses of crop production due to air pollutants such as fluoride can be inferred usefully from the extent of visible injury to foliage that may be associated with different levels of pollutant exposure.

Abstract: the historiography of penicillin has tended to overlook the importance of developing and disseminating know-how in fermentation technology. a focus on this directs attention to work before the war of a network in the us and europe concerned with the production of organic acids, particularly gluconic and citric acids. at the heart of this network was the german-czech konrad bernhauer. other members of the network were a group of chemists at the us department of agriculture who first recognized the production possibilities of penicillin. the pfizer corporation, which had recruited a leading department of agriculture scientist at the end of the first world war, was also an important centre of development as well as of production. however, in wartime bernhauer was an active member of the ss and his work was not commemorated after his death in 1975. after the war new processes of fermentation were disseminated by penicillin pioneers such as jackson foster and ernst chain. because of its commercial context his work was not well known. the conclusion of this paper is that the commercial context, on the one hand, and the nazi associations of bernhauer, on the other, have submerged the significance of know-how development in the history of penicillin.

The implementation of the so-called rule of Social Welfare in Brazil, has fed directly into their policies on social assistance. That, as anecessary adaptation of its political structures and social welfare from an exclusionary process of capitalist development, for these moments, seriously questioned by the political forces of communist countries and pressure from groups and parties of the left wanting bynational socialist revolutions. Case, which in Brazil in a first moment takes to the formulation of the concept of minor marginalized as a way to better camouflage the authoritarian practices of the Brazilian military dictatorship, but that in a second time ifradicalizes, in default of the military regime, putting out - the creation of a new term of the boys and girls on the streets, while a new category of analysis and criticism of political and social reality. Expression that once consolidated in reality assitance Brazilian has been exported to the world, as a category of analysis that has become a basic concept reference to the new Legal Doctrine of the Childhood Protection Total.

Abstract: the aim of this study was evaluate the utilization of tools for pain perception assessment in 41 hospitalized preschool children submitted to painful procedures: care of wounds or blood extraction. the utilizaded tools were the faces scale, behaviorial indicators and words which describe the pain. most of the pre-schoolers understood and correctly answered to the faces scale, which can be noticed by the crescent moviment 0 (no pain)? 4 (maximum pain) during the choice of faces before and after the painful procedure. crying, immortility and forehead wriking were the predominant behavioral indicators, intensified during the procedure. preschoolers verbalizations about their pain showed up to be concret terms or evaluative-indicative nature, esulting in variable, precise or weakly precise concepts.
