Abstract:
In order to evaluate the safety and efficacy of Borago officinalis (900 mg borage oil capsules) in the treatment of patients presenting with cyclic mastalgia, 91 subjects were included in the study. Efficacy assessments were performed based on data obtained prior to the start of treatment (Pretreatment), and after each menstrual cycle (Assessment 2—following 45 days of treatment; and Assessment 3—at the end of the 90-day treatment period). Primary efficacy measures considered the results of the Mastalgia Questionnaire, including a 100 mm visual analog pain scale assessing mean, most intense mastalgia severity, and impact on work, sleep, and sexual activity. Safety and tolerability measures included any changes in vital signs and physical exam in relation to pretreatment, any changes in clinical laboratory exams in relation to pretreatment, and the occurrence of adverse events after the first dose of study medication. The VAS scores of the mean mastalgia and most severe mastalgia both showed statistically significant (p < 0.0001) reductions from Pretreatment to Assessment 3. Mean mastalgia scores improved among 92.3% of the treated patients, while most severe mastalgia scores improved among 93.4% of patients. There were statistically significant improvements in the assessments of mastalgia impact on work (χ2 = 28.24; gl = 4; p < 0.0001), sleep (χ2 = 14.29; gl = 4; p = 0.0006), and sexual activity (χ2 = 16.11; gl = 4; p = 0.0029) during the treatment period. The results of this study indicate a significant improvement in the mastalgia of the treated patients together with an improvement in the quality of life parameters evaluated. In terms of safety, the tolerability of the treatment was good, with the presence of some adverse events, all of which had been previously described with use of the Borago officinalis extract. No serious side effects were reported, and the events that did occur were transitory. Based on the results of this study, we concluded that the Borago officinalis extract was safe and effective in the treatment of cyclic mastalgia among the treated patients.

Abstract: This work was a experimental design in order to optimize the process of bleaching of fish oil, using the sodium bentonite as adsorbent, from the influence of variables such as weight of sodium bentonite, the temperature process, thermal activation of sodium bentonite and time of agitation. It was then possible to fit a mathematical model with the influence of each variable in the process of bleaching of the oil. The response variable was the absorbance at 444 nm.

Abstract: Considering the high incidence of parasitic diseases in centereastern region of Paraná, an inquiry about its probable determinants was carried out. Particularly, the occurrence of Ascaris Lumbricoides was analyzed. Bibliographical research referring to this theme and data-collecting from centereastern region have been carried out, attempting to contextualize the epidemiological condition of this region. We can conclude that the high occurrence of ascariasis in analyzed region is linked to life conditions of general population, the deficiency in urban and sanitary planning, socioeconomic conditions and, essentially, the absence of investments in basic infrastructure. Thus, this study demonstrates the need of an urgent prophylactic action.

Abstract: The aim of this work was to evaluate by comet assay the possible induction of DNA strand breaks in Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cells (PBMC) of REMd sleep deprived (REMd) rats. Wistar male rats were submitted to 72h of REMd using a narrow platform inside a water tank and then allowed to recover at different times (0, 24,48 and 72 h). Wide platform technique was used as Awet control @ (WC). Both groups were treated similarly before and after being put on either the narrow or wide platforms. Blood aliquots for comet assay were obtained before, during and after REMd and in WC groups at the times cited above. REMd and WC presented a significant increase (p<0.05) in the number of comet units compared with it`s base line level. The increase was proportional to REMd period and time on wide platforms, but after being taken off it progressively returned to base line level after 72 h. REMd and WC rats presented similar induction of DNA strand breaks. Possible mechanisms of DNA damage are discussed.

Memórias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz , 2001, DOI: 10.1590/S0074-02762001000300010
Abstract: interferon-a is used in antiviral therapy in humans, mainly for viral hepatitis b and c. an anti-fibrotic effect of interferon has been postulated even in the absence of anti-viral response, which suggests that interferon directly inhibits fibrogenesis. rats infected with the helminth capillaria hepatica regularly develop diffuse septal fibrosis of the liver, which terminates in cirrhosis 40 days after inoculation. the aim of this study was to test the anti-fibrotic effect of interferon in this experimental model. evaluation of fibrosis was made by three separate methods: semi-quantitative histology, computerized morphometry and hydroxyproline measurements. treatment with interferon-a proved to inhibit the development of fibrosis in this model, especially when doses of 500,000 and 800,000 iu were used for 60 days. besides confirming the anti-fibrotic potential of interferon-a on a non-viral new experimental model of hepatic fibrosis, a clear-cut dose-dependent effect was observed.

Abstract: cassia angustifolia vahl (senna) is a natural product that contains sennosides, which are active components that affect the intestinal tract and induce diarrhea. authors have shown that senna produces dna (deoxyribonucleic acid) lesions in escherichia coli cultures and can act as an antifungal agent. natural drugs can alter the labeling of blood constituents with technetium-99m (99mtc) and can affect the biodistribution of radiopharmaceuticals. in this work, we have evaluated the influence of a senna extract on the radiolabeling of blood constituents and on the biodistribution of the radiopharmaceutical sodium pertechnetate (na99mtco4)in wistar rats. twelve animals were treated with senna extract for 7 days. blood samples were withdrawn from the animals and the radiolabeling procedure was carried out. the senna extract did not modify the radiolabeling of the blood constituents. a biodistributional assay was performed by administering na99mtco4 and determining its activity in different organs and in blood. the senna extract altered the biodistribution of na99mtco4 in the thyroid, liver, pancreas, lungs and blood. these results are associated with properties of the chemical substances present in the aqueous senna extract. although these assays were performed in animals, our findings suggest that caution should be exercised when nuclear medicine examinations using na99mtco4 are conducted in patients who are using senna extract.
