Abstract: introduction: the peripheral facial palsy is a disease that can leave significant aesthetical and functional sequelae in patients. according to medical literature, bell's palsy (bp) is the most common cause, representing from 50 to 80% of the cases. however, it must be considered as an exclusion diagnosis. a slightly higher prevalence is estimated in women and its incidence is bimodal with peaks in the third and eighth life decades. most patients recover within weeks, though a worsening degree may be common in the first 48 hours. treatment must be performed to prevent complications and the medical procedures are not universally accepted. the following have been mentioned as bp risk factors: arterial hypertension, mellitus diabetes, pregnancy, puerperium and infection caused by type i herpes virus. although there are several bp associated risk factors, regarding face-lifting surgery there is only one reported case in medical literature. case report: in the present study, the authors describe the second case of bell's palsy after face-lifting surgery.

RSBO , 2013,
Abstract: Introduction: A growing interest to preserve teeth into the mouth by patients resulted in the increasing number of endodontic retreatments, and when these happen, many different types of irritants are extruded through the foramen. Objective: This study analyzed in vitro the amount of debris extruded through the foramen using four instrumentation techniques during endodontic retreatment. Material and methods: Forty mesial-buccal roots of first molars were selected, instrumented with anatomical diameter up to size #30 ISO file and then obturated with gutta-percha and grossman sealer by lateral condensation. After, they were separated and randomly allocated into four groups with 10 teeth each for the endodontic retreatment procedure: G1 – conventional technique + solvent, G2 – conventional technique without solvent, G3 – ProTaper retreatment + solvent, G4 – ProTaper retreatment without solvent. In all groups, gutta-percha in the coronal portion was removed by using size 1-3 Gates Glidden drills. All teeth were irrigated with distilled water. The debris extruded through the foramen were collected and weighed by an analytical balance. Results: Group 4 had the lowest average for material extrusion through the foramen followed by groups 2, 3 and 1. When Tukey test for statistical analysis was applied, no significant difference among groups were found (p = 0.5664). Conclusion: We conclude that all instrumentation techniques used in this study produced debris which goes beyond the foramen.

Abstract: orbital injuries may be associated with the presence of foreign bodies in which long retention leads to damages such as loss of vision or cerebral abscess. we present the case of a 21-year-old male patient that developed ptosis, limitation of movements and an inflammatory reaction in the right eye after being hit by a tree branch. a ct scan of the orbits revealed an increased density in the right orbital cone. after the neurosurgical approach for the removal of the foreign body, a wooden fragment measuring 2.0x0.3 cm, the patient had a good outcome without visual deficits, ptosis regression and resolution of the inflammatory process. the postoperative ct scan didn't identify any remaining foreign body fragment. this case calls attention to the fact that the wooden splinter presented on ct scan with high density (136 hu) two months after the trauma and was removed by a supraorbital craniotomy.

Abstract: the practice of table tennis requires numerous dynamic actions which could conduce to athletic injuries. due to the shortage of studies on this modality, there is important to know inherent factors to athletic injuries for a preventive patterns subsequent formulation. the objective of this study was to explore the risk factors to athletic injuries in table tennis players. for that, there were evaluated 111 athletes who participated of paulista championship of table tennis, with mean age of 22.39±8.88 years, of both gender, recruited on a randomized way and classified into two level of competition: regional/state and national/international. it was used the reported morbidity survey adapted to the table tennis characteristics in order to gathering information about the personal data, training data and athletic injuries. there was observed 0.51 injuries by athlete, and the athletes of national/international level presented the higher indexes of injury (52.94%) when compared with regional/state (48.84%). on specific gesture, the upper limbs (93.62%) and the trunk (87.5%) were the most affected sites. for both level of competition, the training was the more related moment of the injuries occurrence. the conclusions are that the athletes of national/international level present higher indexes of injury and the specific gesture is the principal reason of injury, affecting mainly the upper limbs and trunk, occurring more frequently during the training.
