Hartmann, Marcelo;Moala, Fernando A.;Mendona, Marco Aurélio;
Revista Brasileira de Meteorologia , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-77862011000400006
Abstract: considering the socioeconomic importance of presidente prudente area, this study aimed at to estimate the maximum pluvial precipitation expected for different levels of probability and to check the fitting degree of the data to the gumbel model, with the parameter estimation obtained by the maximum likelihood approach. the kolmogorov-sminorv (k-s) test showed that the gumbel distribution has fitted with p-value larger than 0.28 for all of the time periods considered, showing that the gumbel distribution presents a good fitting to the observed data representing the maximum pluvial precipitations values. the precipitation estimates obtained by the maximum likelihood approach are consistent allowing to reproduce with plenty reliability the rainfall regime for presidente prudente region. therefore, the knowledge of the monthly maximum pluvial precipitation distribution and the expected maximum daily precipitation estimates permits a better strategic planning thus minimizing the risk of economical losses for this region.

Santos, Simone Mendona dos;Souza, Marcelo Pereira de;
Engenharia Sanitaria e Ambiental , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S1413-41522011000400008
Abstract: given the potential of the strategic environmental assessment (sea) and the strategic importance of the energy sector as an object of study, this article uses literature review of relevant literature to identify the potential contributions of the sea for the brazilian energy plan. sea is discussed as an alternative to the inclusion of relevant environmental variable in decision-making inherent in the plan. the instrument contributes to the establishment of a minimum environmental agenda to be respected, essential to the sustain ability of the planning activities of the brazilian energy sector. however, to fully achieve its objectives and provide subsidies for environmental sustain ability depends on the fulfillment of certain requirements.

Abstract:

This paper focuses on the interpretations in the analyses of palynofacies and organic geochemistry carried out on a sedimentary profile covering 9542 cal yr BP from a pond located at the mining district from Ametista do Sul, southernmost Brazil. The hydrological isolation renders this pond, located on a hilltop, highly sensitive to climatic change because the water entering in the system is subsidized exclusively by the rainfall. The main goal of this study is to establish relationships between the sedimentary organic record and climatic fluctuations in the Holocene, trying to correlate the alterations in the particulate organic matter with regional climatic changes or perhaps even events on a global scale. Fluctuations in water depth are inferred from the frequency of the autochthonous elements (algae), which predominate in the basal intervals, but tend to decrease progressively toward the top, when begining to alternate periods of high and low frequency with the parautochthonous (spores) and allochthonous (pollen grains) elements, due to changes in the patterns of moisture. Pseudoschizaea seems to have a closer relationship with the spores than with all other algae and can serve as a biological marker of transitional intervals or have some role in the successional process of vegetation. The variety of spores of ferns and pollen grains on the topmost interval indicates increased vegetal diversity, and is probably related to the process of successional evolution of the area. An increased rainfall event detected between 8.6 to 7.4 ka yr BP can be responsible for the beginning of the process of water accumulation in the gossan and sedimentation of the pond and can be related with the “Bond Events”. The saturation level of the pond, in turn, remained relatively constant until 6.8 ka yr BP, when changes in the patterns of moisture make the environment drier and resulted in an intermittent pattern of water depth,

Resilience in migraine brains: decrease of coherence after photic stimulation
Mayara Mendona-de-Souza,Belmira L. S. A. Costa,Marcelo C. A. Rodrigues
Frontiers in Human Neuroscience , 2012, DOI: 10.3389/fnhum.2012.00207
Abstract: Background: During migraine attacks, patients generally have photophobia and phonophobia and seek for environments with less sensorial stimulation. Present work aimed to quantify cortical partial directed coherence (PDC) of electroencephalographic (EEG) recordings from migraine patients and controls in occipital, parietal, and frontal areas with or without photic stimulation. Our hypothesis is that migraine patients with visual aura might have neuronal networks with higher coherence than controls even in interictal periods due to a predisposition in sensory cortical processing. Methods: Eleven adult women with migraine with visual aura (at least 48 h without previous attacks) and seven healthy adult woman were submitted to EEG recording in basal state and during photic stimulation. Results: When compared to healthy volunteers, migraine patients show different coherence profiles. Migraine patients had greater coherence than controls during the basal period (without photic stimulation), showing predisposition for sensory processing in many frequency ranges. After photic stimulation, patients showed a decrease in cortical coherence while controls had an increase. Conclusions: When compared to healty subjects, migraineurs show increased cortical coherence before photic stimulation, but a decrease when stimulation starts. This may be the expression of a resilience mechanism that allows migraineurs the interictal period. The PDC analysis permits to address a patient coherence profile, or “coherence map,” that can be utilized for management of the headache disorder or following up treatments.

Abstract: OA animals showed the characteristic histopathological changes of the joints and the accompanying nociceptive behaviour, evaluated by the Knee-Bed and CatWalk tests. An increase of ATF-3 expression was detected in the DRG of OA animals as early as 3?days after the injection of 1 or 2?mg of MIA and 7?days after the injection of 0.3?mg. NPY expression was increased in animals injected with 1 or 2?mg of MIA, at day 3 or in all time-points, respectively. From day 7 onwards there was a massive increase of GAP-43 expression in ATF-3 cells.The expression of the neuronal injury markers ATF-3 and NPY as well as an up-regulation of GAP-43 expression, indicative of peripheral fibre regeneration, suggests that axonal injury and a regeneration response may be happening in this model of OA. This opens new perspectives in the unravelling of the physiopathology of the human disease.

Abstract: forecasting performance is tested for a broad set of empirical exchange rate models for an emerging economy with independently floating regime and inflation target monetary arrangement. compared to the recent literature on out-of-sample exchange rate predictability, we include a more extensive set of models. we test vintage monetary models of the 1980's, exchange rate equilibrium models of the 1990's and a taylor rule based model. this last model assumes an endogenous monetary policy, where the central bank follows a taylor rule reaction function to set interest rates. our results show that taylor rule models and behavioral equilibrium exchange rate models, the last one combining productivity differentials with portfolio balance effect, have superior predictive accuracy when compared to the random walk benchmark. some out-of-sample predictability is also obtained with parsimonious models based on uncovered interest parity arguments.
